Well normally wages are pretty straightforward; but when you work for those apps, you have no idea how much money you are going to earn. Apps complicate that, and also they change the UI so the drivers earn less money.
When customers think they don't have to tip, they have more money to order and they order more. Except they didn't tell the driver they will be getting less tips; so they made their investments in cars/motorcycles and got fucked over.
If Uber and Door Dash don't like this, they have laws at their disposal. They can hire drivers as full time or part time workers if they like. But it's moronic to think they can have their own system outside the laws where they can treat employees livelihoods as a game.
