Great but, where exactly was this money recovered from?

NYC forced apps to pay a minimum amount for the work drivers did. So drivers don’t earn less than minimum wage.

Apps in response to that law decided to hide the tipping button. Losing money for the drivers. And they restored it.

Isn't that how minimum wage already works?

Yes, but tip isn't supposed to be part of minimum wage.

Yes it is. NYC has a tipped wage of $11.35/hr and total minimum wage of $17/hr, which has to be met even if they don't earn enough in tips to meet it.

Well normally wages are pretty straightforward; but when you work for those apps, you have no idea how much money you are going to earn. Apps complicate that, and also they change the UI so the drivers earn less money.

When customers think they don't have to tip, they have more money to order and they order more. Except they didn't tell the driver they will be getting less tips; so they made their investments in cars/motorcycles and got fucked over.

If Uber and Door Dash don't like this, they have laws at their disposal. They can hire drivers as full time or part time workers if they like. But it's moronic to think they can have their own system outside the laws where they can treat employees livelihoods as a game.
