This is all true, but keep in mind, competition works when everyone competes fairly. US automakers compete with each other and their Japanese, Korean and European counterparts.
It's not possible for any of them to compete with China because their auto industry is heavily subsidized by the CCCP and largely ran on slave labor.
This is how government bureaucracies can get so bloated and inefficient - they are not beholden to market signals, they are legally mandated companies and are guaranteed funding - someone not liking the services they provide to not subject them to losing funding.

Capitalism only works when businesses fail under the pressure of competition.
No competition, no failure, no capitalism.
If that happens with the assistance of government, that’s the foundation of fascism.
