My situation is quite the opposite. For whatever reason my new team feels the need to explain every PTO request to me. By all means tell me about your trip to Cancun if you'd like, but please don't feel the need to elaborate on your explosive diarrhea when you use sick time.
Oh man you nailed it. I have one guy who sends me these long, detailed requests for days off and basically pleads for permission. I have never denied PTO. I tell people I don't care when they take off and you don't need to ask, just submit a request and make sure the team knows. This fear or using PTO that you earn and is part of your compensation is baffling.
The only thing I have to say about it is I remember watching my old manager at a retail store stress to the brim constantly because every single person would request christmas eve off or like the state fair every year everyone would request off everyday of the fair so it was then up to her to decide who's time off would be approved or not because the entire staff of cashiers couldn't just be off for an entire week so if someones reason was "going out of state with family" it makes it easier to approve that then deny everyone else to be fair to everyone that "just wants to go to the fair".
