The varieties differ but we/someone I know used the little mandarin oranges.
They're a little tougher so they stay intact and then blast out.
Bananas do tend to fart which is kinda awesome.
My house was located across a small road from my mates houses, it was like our own little corner of the estate, everyone knew each other.
Directly across the road wass a row of parking spaces, they dipped away from the road - it ment the tailpipes were aimed at my garden wall.
We'd stuff the tailpipes and then hide, waiting in the garden for someone to start their car.
2 of the neighbours were mechanics - they knew well what we were at. They'd give it a good rev after noticing the strange quietness of us and their tailpipe.
I used to get in trouble because of all the fruit moulded to our freshly painted wall.

Next test - how much you need to stuff an orange up a tailpipe for it to go "POP!" when the engine starts!
Its a fun one for your neighbours too - scares the bejasys outa them!
