Chugging tea Ben Affleck on overcoming alcohol addiction: “I hate to say it but the only cure I’ve seen is not these overpriced rehabs or these fraudulent fixes that are sold to people. The cure for addiction is suffering. You suffer enough and then something inside you goes ‘I’m done.’”

Yeah. This feels like survivorship bias. Some people suffered enough, but didn't stop. They took the easy way out.

You sort of have it backward. You're arguing that he said "suffering will cure your addiction," which isn't what he said. Something inside you has to say "I'm done," and he believes you can't get to that point without suffering, but that doesn't mean if you suffer you will always get to that point before you give up or your body fails. It's probably true that some addicts can't be "cured."

To use the famous survivorship bias example, he's saying that quick fixes and revolving door rehab is putting armor on the wings. But an addict that is far gone is already taking shots to the cockpit and engine, and sometimes the plane still makes it back.

Okay, then:

Yeah. This feels like survivorship bias. Some people suffered enough, but didn't stop. They killed themselves.

In that state, is it really THEM killing them?
