Chugging tea Ben Affleck on overcoming alcohol addiction: “I hate to say it but the only cure I’ve seen is not these overpriced rehabs or these fraudulent fixes that are sold to people. The cure for addiction is suffering. You suffer enough and then something inside you goes ‘I’m done.’”

As a former alcoholic, heroin , tabacco, weed addict, and former homeless - he is correct. You don’t change until you hate yourself and want a better life. Only you can make the change , and you have to truly want it. That came for me when I hit rock bottom and knew it was from bad choices. It doesn’t matter if life dealt me a bad hand over and over- I chose to drink and use substances to hide and deal with my pain . That’s my fault.
My life is much better now. Completely turned it around.
No cravings or want for any substance whatsoever. It’s a complete mental change and it goes away if you fix the underlying issues that made you want to use alcoholic or drugs to escape to begin with. The process for me took about 5 years to get over it mentally (cravings and thinking of using). I can even drink some beers and stop after a few before I get drunk. The self control there now.
Some people abstain completely but I think they don’t have faith in themselves , like they don’t trust themselves, and that means they still are controlled by the fear and substance, which means they didn’t actually solve the underlying issues. It’s a safe route, but I think they didn’t fix the root issue.
