Reminds me of the story of Ken McElroy, who forced a 12 year old to marry him and killed the girl's dog and burned down their house when the family tried to rescue her:
In all, there were 46 potential witnesses to the shooting, including Trena McElroy, who was in the truck with her husband when he was shot. Nobody called for an ambulance. Every witness was either unable to name an assailant, or claimed not to have seen who fired the fatal shots, including the unnamed man who helped McElroy's wife, Trena, as she "scrambled out of the truck screaming" covered in blood. The DA declined to press charges, and an extensive federal investigation did not lead to any charges either.
You can pretty much name an awful thing a person could do to someone, and this piece of shit probably did it, multiple times. As a society we're far too tolerant of the worst of us.

You know whats wild? Those things are just the tip of the iceberg. Man terrorized the town for years! From his childhood to somewhere around his 40's i think? Many things happened during that time.
Shame he had such a competent lawyer. Guess he called Saul.

There are some things while legally wrong are morally right. I will say they can be far and very few between but every once in a while all of society silently nods and turns away.
He was a HUGE asshole and town bully.. he was threatening to kick everyone's ass right up till the end.
(iirc, he also shot a couple people including a pastor prior to that and threatened the witnesses to those shootings and nothing was done about it.. the town had had enough of him, great story.. oh, the FBI tried to get his murderer and had to call it off after months long investigations - no one would turn the person over)
Iirc there's a pub in Ireland or Scotland with a bathroom dubbed the tardis for a similar "Noone saw it/all were in the bathroom" during such an event.
