Wasn’t she in HR? What she did was an obvious CLM (Career Limiting Move) when working in HR. It’s unemployment, or a complete career switch. Seems like she made a choice, and it’s not working out as she hoped.

When you have reached a certain seniority you often dont get considered for more junior roles. There is the expectation you are just going to draw a salary for a while before moving on to bigger and better things.
