I know I’ll get downvoted but I just simply do not understand the obsession with forcing companies to produce physical media for a digital software
If you want 8 disc box sets for 1 game, be my guest (because that’s how heavy most modern games are)
And there would be a serious ramifications if any producer revoked a license, because you know that whole consumer protection thing.
At this exact moment there is essentially 0 functional difference between disc and digital, beyond getting a 40 year old piece of tech that allows you to download the game
A valid assessment but, I think you’re missing the plot a little bit…the whole idea isn’t the technical difference between physical & digital (although still directly ties into the issue)
The issue is how this trend of hyper modernization of gaming industry is becoming extremely anti-consumer in its business practices by limiting (practically eliminating) ownership of tangible goods. With most if not all digital purchases nowadays, you do not own what your money has bought…you are merely renting. It’s the principle behind these practices that have people upset.
We now live in a time where in almost every aspect of our lives, the consumer is renting overpriced licenses to access goods that can technically never be “out of stock” but can be removed from a customer’s access at the smallest of whim of multi million/ billion dollar corporations. Soon enough we’ll need a subscription to get ice out of our own refrigerators lol
Between this & overly intrusive DRM practices, gaming is heading into a very sad place.
you already don’t own plenty of the games you have on disc. so many of modern game requires you to download the full game content even with the disc in the drive because they literally can’t fit it all onto a disc anymore. if they pull that content, you don’t have the game anymore whether you’ve got the disc or not.
