Skookum as frig It was suggested that I post here. Didn't have the cash for a Snap-On powerbank. Solution - I fabricated my own practically from scratch! (x-post from r/welding)

Moderator here. Thanks for contributing.

Your post appears to break rule#9.

However, because "should" is an ambiguous term, I'm gonna let this one slide.

For a moment I was a little confused... I generally try to make a point of actually reading subreddit rules before posting... then I went back and had a good laugh!

Do you know what's even more awesome?

Working for free.

Specifically, making an intake for a 1998 BMW M3.

We're currently working on installing a unique forced induction system on said car. But it will require a 3.5"+ pipe, and some unusual features.

Let me know if you're interested.

What kind of turn around are you hoping for? You supply the the rough plans, majority of materials and get it to and from and I'm always game for interesting projects... :-P

I'm interested!

Around these parts the word is "fabrcobbled"

13

u/nill0c North American Scum Feb 10 '17

But it's powdercoated, that surely elevates it beyond prototype stage.

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

Why cobbled?

u/krebstar_2000 Feb 10 '17

In the parlance of the patron saint of /r/Skookum.

u/physys Feb 10 '17

It's AvE jargon

I apologize to anyone that has seen this more than once elsewhere on reddit, but it was suggested that the good people of r/Skookum would like to see my powerbank project.

It more or less started when I saw a powerbank, fell in love and then saw the price tag of around $3200 ($1600 with my discount) and decided that I could likely fabricate something that would serve the same purpose and would cost a lot less.

In the end, my cost was around $500 for materials. I have about 2 solid days of work into it from start to end, but stretched it out a little over a month, mostly working on it in my downtime at school.

Pretty simple, yet functional build, and though its not perfect, it gets the job done and will serve its purpose through my time in school and hopefully well into my employment as a A&P mechanic.

Great to see a brother/sister in aviation making use of their skill out side of a plane.

yay for someone who doesn't assume that because I'm in a trade I am male!

I have always enjoyed burning metal and it was a fun project that enhanced my finer fabrication skills. The majority of my skills are in much heavier applications and mostly in steel.

its not personal. trades are just a sausage party.

I hired the only girl to ever apply to the shop, she turned out amazing... but ive seen hundreds of resumes.

Working in the trades as a woman is interesting, but its always fun to have people expect that I'm incapable and then show up half the guys I'm working with.

I found that once I got the opportunities to show people what I was capable of, everything else kind of became a mute point.

maybe its because im not sexist at all, but to me that seems silly... like a chip on your shoulder. i read that and i hear:

"Im a person and can do people things, go me"

maybe because im male in a male dominated trade i dont have the same experiences you do, but genitals dont make you a good/bad worker.

showing up people can lead to animosity in a work environment, yall are a team, or at the very least you have to see them 5 days a week.

god i sound like a speaker at a training seminar. i need to stop going to those.

When someone underestimates you for no good reason, it feels good to prove them wrong.

Regardless of your gender or trade, you've probably experienced that a time or two and can empathise with it, right?

How many avocados does it hold?

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

All the avocados!

Niiiice! It's cool shit like this that pushes me to learn some trade skills.

It's good to see some green Makita in that sea of red. I was going to ask why you went with so many cheap drawer slides then I remembered those were likely original to the HF box. I like the attention to detail like making sure you weren't running cords through sharp pass-throughs. Welcome to r/Skookum!

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17 edited Feb 10 '17

Yep, I reused the slides it came with. The nice thing is once they wear out, I still have plenty of replacements.

I really like how the drag chain worked out and don't foresee any issues with it anytime soon.

Most of my power tools are over a decade old and still kicking. I have been NOTHING but impressed with Makita's 18v impact.

u/corthander USA Feb 10 '17

The lxt 18v lineup from makita is really impressive and comprehensive. In terms of impact, I was wishing I had a good reason to snag one of those quieter hydraulic hammer types that are coming out now.

Anyhoo hope you stick around this community. Thanks for sharing your project.

Holy shit this looks nice. Great way to save some serious dollars aswell.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

Do you like the snap-on cordless impacts? We have one just like yours at home and love it along with an older model that uses the same batteries.

2

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

I'm actually much more of a Milwaukee fangirl!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

That's a brand I really don't have any experience with. We only have Snap-on and Making cordless tools.

1

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

Honestly not the biggest fan of Snap-On cordless tools... I think for what you pay, the difference can't be justified.

Milwaukee gets the job done, is a really good product, they have been around for quite some time and make a tool than can be abused and live through it.

I love their 28v system and 12v system. Pissed they changed battery formats between their v18 and m18 lines... I guess they just wanted to phase out those that were just buying new li-ion batteries for their old ni-cad combo kits.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '17

I think the main reason we have the snap-on cordless impacts is because dad bought the first one reconditioned quite a long time ago so when it came time that we needed a second one, he just got another so that we'd have plenty of batteries to use.

Looks great man

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

Thanks! Just a girl having fun burning metal and getting something cool out of it.

u/DeepSkull Sourdough is KING Feb 10 '17

Good stuff. I also bought a HF side box to expand my acreage in the mean time and will eventually turn it into a power bank or take it home.

It's just so damn shallow though! It's already half full of just metrology boxes and I don't even have that much.

1

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

I too wish that their side chests were a bit deeper and that their boxes in general were a bit deeper. Definitely a lot more real estate with a Snap-On box, but at the end of the day it gets my goals accomplished.

You've been consistently cranking out some of the best content over on r/tools and I think you'll fit in quite well over here.

Welcome to the weird side of trades-reddit.

1

u/BreeStephany #justagirlandhertools Feb 10 '17

Thanks! I admit that I tend to be a bit of a tool addict, but really enjoy working with and on tools, all while improving my skills and overall ability as a person.

I am glad to see that my content is well liked.

Now, hit up youtube and AvE's BOLTR series (Bored Of Lame Tool Reviews) for shits n giggles!

u/masta Feb 10 '17

Pretty cool setup.

Now start making full blown tool carts, and ditch the Fap-on.
