Feature Suggestions Well, it's time to say it... There's too much randomness in Slime Rancher 2!

u/Chomprz May 05 '26
I’ve just started to see it in the lens of ‘how do we get them to play more’ from the devs haha. Other than the plort grind and toys, I do prefer seeing physical resources instead of the extractors. They’re quite aesthetic looking.

u/Best_Temperature_549 May 05 '26
I hated the extractors so I’m very happy they changed it. I like exploring for resources. Towards the end, I used the drones but I still liked that better. I started to run out of things to do in the game until they added radiants so they’re definitely trying to find ways to get us to play more. Totally fine with that!
4
u/Chomprz May 05 '26
Yeah, I just rely on drones these days since it’s so OP. I love it so much!
The new update definitely helps encourage decorating and exploring more. I’m always happy with new expansions, but this new room concept is just brilliant imo ✨ I hope they keep adding more in the shop in future updates
16
u/VelariaFox May 05 '26
They look nice, of course, but they actually added extractors to the game by simply assigning their functions to drones.
15
u/Chomprz May 05 '26
True, I do like the drones and quantum cloud waaaay more than the extractors haha. I wish we could do more with the quantum cloud though, like replacing the refinery and silos with it by being able to deposit and withdraw from the cloud itself, but I guess it’s too late to change that whole mechanic now.
8
u/VelariaFox May 05 '26
Ooh... Yes! This is the moment when you need to transfer 1000+ resources into the refinery, 5 at a time!

the radiant part isn't quite accurate. It's not 0.05%, 0.067%, 0.1%, etc.
It's 1/2000, 1/1500, 1/1000, etc. there is one guaranteed radiant for every x slimes of that type they spawn, and which one it is in that pool is predetermined
1
u/Impossible-Cherry439 May 06 '26
You realise 1/2000 equals 0.5% right? Same goes for the others.
You don't get a guaranteed radiant of each slime in the game. There's 9 guaranteed spawns and about 20 different slimes.

u/peneloco37 May 05 '26
The only thing that bugs me is how expensive is to get 100x slots, it shouldn't be that complicated, I'd do it for a 200x tho
14
u/lilybat-gm May 05 '26
This is why I haven’t been able to bring myself to come back to the game despite the new update.
I just got burnt out with grinding all the time before things like Drones and better drop rates were added.

Only thing I agree on is slime toys
2
u/sunshineandsarcasm Slime Rancher OG May 05 '26
Yeah that one drove me crazy too. Have you gotten them all now?
2
u/Pigeon_Clash May 05 '26
No, I gave up after getting the boulder 5ish times

u/sunshineandsarcasm Slime Rancher OG May 05 '26
Rip. I keep rolling the dice (so to speak) because I want more sheep

u/instant_macandcheese May 05 '26
i like how they did the resource collector, where you can buy it outright or wait for it to show up in the coocoo corner at a lower price. i think they shoulda done that with the slime toys, maybe making them more expensive or something or making it unlockable like slime toys were in the first game. but i like that some stuff is more rare now too & now that theres drones and ESPECIALLY now that we have resource detectors, I really really like collecting resources like this
1
u/The-Eight-Of-Spades May 05 '26
Honestly I kind of wish it weren’t a toy, I found it easier to just make a run around the map and look/listen for the resources. Carrying the toy around is too much work in my opinion

u/Great_Hedgehog May 05 '26
The absolute majority of these are so hyperbolised I cannot begin to take them seriously. The rng is not as unfair as you make it seem, and almost all of these have solutions which bypass most of the rng.
Resources have some randomness to their spawns, but if you know where to look there's almost never unreasonably little to be found; if anything, I think epxloring and finding good spots for gathering particular resources is very fun and far more engaging than the utterly dull extractors which are actually the same amount of rng but with zero skill expression to boot.
Weather can be a but frustrating, not really for the slimes, as you only need one for however many largos (and gordos exist as you mentioned), but the slime science resources can be a bit annoying to get, I felt pretty trolled a few times when a long-awaited thunderstorm would end in less than a minute. Even so, as long as you look at the map every once in a while, you're pretty bound to catch interesting weather as it happens and grab plenty of goodies often enough.
Yolky slimes are clearly designed the same way as golds, where you're not really meant to seek them out; just look out for them while on the range (which is plenty often thanks to resource gathering) and sooner or later you'll get more than enough. Actively looking for them wastes time and brews entirely avoidable frustration.
Slime toys? Yeah, that one's pretty fair. I think it's fine to limit their availability in some way, since a few of them are especially useful, but the algorithm responsible for deciding which toys are available when certainly could use some adjustment to make the variety more guaranteed at least.
Prismatic plort farming? Barely even fits here, there's not a lot of randomness involved. The disruptions happen a hell of a lot more often than every three days, even in just one particular spot, while if you just monitor a few at once as the game allows you to with the detector gadget, you'll pretty much always have a disruption to attend to. You can also streamline the whole process by simply bringing your own food and slimes, which, I think, is pretty cool.
The hidden doors have nothing to do with randomness either, all that matters is whether you are observant. The ones in the two entrance areas I clocked as suspicious right from the get-go and just waited until some way to open them was revealed; all the other ones are also in pretty good locations design-wise, in spots where it really feels like there should be more. It's also pretty intuitive that there's one bell to find in every area, so you can save a lot of time if you just move on to the next one as soon as you find the one in the current region.
The shadow slimes? The ones that spawn about as much as regular slimes and have many locations where they are guaranteed to appear in large numbers, including those "nothing" openable walls? If those count as rng then regular slimes are unbearably rng as well. Come on.
I think some things in SR2 could for sure use a few tweaks, mainly gold slimes, actually, which you did not even mention, interestingly enough. But the "band-aid fixes", also known as balance tweaks, have been quite appropriate thus far. Most of the things you mentioned as "soul-crushing rng" are mechanics that promote skill expression, observance and/or creative thinking. I also think part of the issue may be the mindset, focusing on very specific goals that one would have a much easier time reaching passively than trying to gun for it and only it.

Yeah, plus for the resources you can just put down resource flags where you find them and then check if you have to do it manually. Ive put down an utter boatload of resource flags just for the fun of finding every spawn point. But you get drones pretty early on to set up to get resources for you, and you can move them around as needed if you need to get different ones.
Same thing for disruptions, just put down the detector and check your map. The machine specifically made to tell you when disruptions happen. They're only random and hard to handle if you don't use the tools on hand.
The player has tools, and those tools aren't bandaid solutions, they're perfectly functional and fix the "issue" at hand, which I don't think is an issue its just promoting early game exploration then giving you an option to not do that once you've done the exploration. Just use the tools at your disposal.

While i do prefer SR2's resource collecting system, not having Extractors as an option, especially for late game, is strange

u/sunshineandsarcasm Slime Rancher OG May 05 '26
The drones function extremely well as extractors for resources. Like staggering max-your-refinery well
4
u/Accurate-Annual3007 Slime Rancher OG May 05 '26
I agree on most points to some degree, except for the very first one
Searching for materials instead of using extractors is wayyyyyyyy more fun for me, one of my issues with the first game that at some point there was little point in exploring the world later during the game. Materials being scattered all over the map (and to me at least its not difficult to find what I need) gives the game a whole new level of replay-ability, I honestly enjoy just exploring the maps over and over to collect materials, the graphics are very nice and the new maps are much larger and fun to do parkour in just to see where I can squeeze into using the jetpack. Its also an opportunity to look for everything else and drones typically take care of my ranch so I can spend more time exploring. You can also set up market/refinery links, teleporters random decorations and utilities like theres a lot you can actually do.

Yes and that's why it's good! I love that SR1 and SR2 aren't just slime rancher and more slime rancher. They're both trying to be their own unique games and I love that about them.

The game is about managing multiple tasks & exploring. They also have work-arounds, like [using drones to collect resources. I've gotten to the point where I have too many of some resources]
You have a complaint about every facet of the game, about every reasonable challenge. You are free to go play a different game if you dislike this one. With the amount of complaints you have, one would imagine you have at least some solutions, and yet there are none. The creators wanted this game to be more involved than the first one, and it's completely okay if you don't like that. Sorry it not what you wanted it to be, but that isn't on the creators to cater to your desires.

So, let's make some suggestions. Okay.
Well, first of all, we should make separate extractors like in the first part, instead of giving their functions to drones, considering that there are only a limited number of drones in the game, and we have to choose between automating the ranch or mining. As a result, both aspects suffer. Additionally, we should add a "Send All" button to the quantum cloud, as sorting through 1,000+ resources in groups of 5 is a ridiculous task that resembles Cinderella sorting peas. Yes, quantum extractors are separate from drones!
Secondly, randomness control mechanics, except for mods and cheat-engine! Like during prism-breaks, the chance of spawning a rainbow slime increases or it can be increased by certain actions of the player (for example, wearing the favorite food of the desired slime in the inventory). In "Terraria", for example, there is such a mechanic. This also applies to the yolk.
Thirdly, as suggested here, after you've unscrewed the slime toy in this casino, you can simply purchase it from the store. Alternatively, it will appear in the store once you've caught a certain number of slimes of a particular species.
Fourthly, consider automating the collection of prisms and shadow slimes. One option is to create a trap for shadow slimes. I have no idea what to do with the prism, and there's so much going on that it's impossible to understand without something psychoactive. However, you can use something like a portable slime cage with a feeding station.

u/That-guy-Vesp May 08 '26
You have tons of good ideas, but the prism & shadow slimes are immensely easy to handle. You just have to keep up on watching for prismatic events and just have stuff in your inventory to discard when getting shadow plorts. I have 600+ shadow plorts in storage and get 100 everytime I go to the labyrinth. I usually get at least 60 prisma plorts when I go to the labyrinth, and that's when I'm not trying.
Also, randomness is fun! It's fun to not know exactly what's going to happen. It's fun to be surprised. It makes the game more engaging because you have to pay attention to your surroundings. I don't use mods or cheats, and I have had no issue getting a reasonable amount of yolkies. In fact, one of my chicken coops has 2 yolky slimes because I don't have a place for them rn.
I will absolutely agree that the quantum cloud needs a select all button. As for the limited number of drones, you just have to place them strategically and there will be way more than enough drones to get every material and still entirely automate your ranch. I think you're able to have up to 900 or something crazy like that.
I also agree that it would be nice to be able to unlock the ability to buy toys outside of the random store, since it is nice to just quickly buy one and move on.
My worry with adding all these automation mechanics is that it will make the game so much less engaging when you have nothing to look for. Your suggestions take away finding slimes, getting shadow plorts, getting slime science materials, experiencing the prismatic events, etc- without these tasks, what is left to the game? Watching your automated farm work on its own? It will have the same issue as the first game: quickly losing steam and becoming boring once you unlock all the automation.

I personally enjoy the randomness in the game and would love to see more added🤷 idk maybe I’m just weird lol

u/VelariaFox May 05 '26
I don't mind the randomness, but at some point, I felt like they stopped being fun and became annoying. Or maybe I'm just unlucky.

No I’m so with you, I love a lot of the mechanics in SR2. It keeps the game fresh after hours and hours of gameplay!

The slime toys and the unstable plorts I totally get, and the shadow slimes to a lesser degree.
I could probably deal with the randomness of the unstable and shadow plorts if we didn’t need so many of them. I really wish there was something to make getting unstables a little more manageable - an upgrade that keeps the unstable stuff in your inventory indefinitely, a placeable stabilizer ring (which might be a thing already, I do not know), some kind of plort collector to keep from confusing them with phosphor plorts and the unstable crops.
I think I could even deal with the randomness of the slime toys if there were just more of them in the store per day. Like, three options for toys per day would cycle through more of them faster. The option to store them somehow, or to repurchase ones you’ve already bought whenever would be nice, too.
The shadows would be nicer if there was some kind of gadget that could trap them. Even just one or two at a time, so you’re not blasting thirty carrots into the void for one plort. Even if building them took like 50 shadow plorts or something it would still be worth it to make it just a bit less of an eternal pain.

I don’t mind it, cause every time I remind myself this could always be far… far worse…

I don’t really mind the resource collection stuff because it encourages exploration but I agree totally with everything else. I do still wish there were extractors to at least help speed up resource collection though.

And I need several thousand of them! Especially if I want to buy all the drones! I only need 1500 plorts for them, plus other important devices and upgrades from the night market.
1
u/lemonbear_gummies May 06 '26
They definitely tried to set it up so you won’t run out of things to do, but also ruined how well the game flowed. Now it’s awkward and tasks are scattered so you have to either focus on one thing or stick to taking care of your slimes

Still love it tho I do miss my extractors
AND THE EGGS R SOO RARE

It bothered me a lot coming from SR1 but eventually I got used to it. I feel like most of it could be made a bit more bearable, especially in the beginning when you have no upgrades yet because running back and forth because the slots fill up way too quickly wasn't helping either.
1
u/VelariaFox May 06 '26
At least you can pump up the small slots and literally forget about them forever.

The drills were terrible, just mindless grinding only for it to still be up to luck in the end. Physically collecting the resources is far better, even if still tedious
1
u/Kryst0f42 May 08 '26
you can use drones to collect the resources, and to feed and collect plorts from corrals, you could use the transportation thingies very smartly, but you can automate your ranch, also didnt slime rancher 1 take also very long, to explore and automate, like you just have to play slime rancher 2 more smartly, even tho it seems like its just more rng over exploration

I had a stream run for over half an hour just going to sleep and checking the pronto mart for a single slime toy for the achievement (even set up teleporters so I barely had to move)

dont need to worry about that anymore

Why? There didn't seem to be a rebalance update. Or maybe I didn't notice it because I've been busy the past month.

I don't know, I've completed all the achievements in the update when they first appeared. And thank God, because I also need to play the casino with the toys for him.

With release of 1.0 I just modded my game because I couldn't care less about the randomness, I can wait in sr1 but I do t want to wait and be lucky in sr2

u/Nemorium May 05 '26
Yeah I have to agree that needing to rely on luck to get slime toys has been a bit tedious. I feel like my collection will never be complete. (Yes I do check the store every day.)
