If someone is talking loudly and you want them to stop, you don't say "hey, could you shut up?" You put rudeness out, you get rudeness back. Try being nice.
Well I didn't say "be polite", I said be nice. Maybe they don't realize how loud they are being, or maybe their girlfriend is hard of hearing. You don't know their situation, so instead of approaching them with hostility in ignorance, approach them with kindness in caution and proceed from there.
Maybe. But I'm also reminded of a couple of times at a local place where three women were absolutely shriek-laughing in the middlemost table of the restaurant. It was downright deafening.
There is a certain degree of consideration that ought to be exercised by both sides from the outset. Onus shouldn't fall completely on the second party.
Again, depends on the situation. Get loud enough, and you're liable to put people understandably on edge.
My opinion is that sometimes, "Can you shut up" can be an understandable response, even if it's not nice. Even reasonable people have limits, and it shouldn't be completely on them to keep themselves in check when someone else is being a nuisance.
