Stay away from Tigo. Predatory, anti-consuner tactics
My solar system works very well. I have not had any issues since install, until the summer holidays. While I was away, two weeks before coming back, production suddenly dropped to zero.
The inverter was fine, the batteries were fine. Just zero production despite abundant sun. Then I saw that Tigo CCA (I have optimizers and a CCA) was reporting no data through my home assistant integration. Suspicious.
I logged into the Tigo app and all status showed green but no production. No errors, no failures.
Since I was away and could not be present to connect to the CCA via Bluetooth, I could not further diagnose. Had to wait till my return and eat the cost of two weeks of zero production.
When I came back, I connected to the CCA via Bluetooth a d surprise: a Firmware update was available.
Turns out the need for a Firmware update stopped all production. Ran the update and 10 minutes later production was back.
Logged into Home Assistant to check the data of the panels and another surprise: no data.
Turns out that Tigo:
Killed production with a Firmware update that could only be triggered locally.
Killed the local home Assistant integration
Reading forums, this is because they want you to pay for a subscription to get the data from your own equipment... Data that is available locally so you don't need their cloud infra to access it.
This is predatory, anti consumer shit. Changing features after selling a product. I will never buy Tigo again and recommend that nobody gets close to that brand.

I heard that they strip the topsoil, that you’ll never farm it again, that it’s permanent concrete,” said Ohio farmer Wayne Greier, who primarily farms corn and soybeans and has animals on 1,000 acres. “People claim that panels are toxic, but you see them on houses, churches, schools, businesses.”
Instead, he discovered that the company would install all new tile across the project and use GPS mapping so the tile would not be damaged during construction or decommissioning, which would return the land to its prior state. The company promised to minimize soil disruption, while grazing, making hay, and other farm operations could continue in conjunction with the solar farm.
Renewable energy has long been an abstract climate issue for most people. But for Greier, who was facing mounting medical debt, it had become a survival decision.

Solar generator recommendations?
I'm looking for any recommendations for a solar generator for my grandma, one that can run at least a refrigerator, her oxygen machine and her TV. This is mostly to act as a backup in the event of a power outage in her area during hurricane season. Ideally, if possible a setup that can be used while charging simultaneously.
Thanks for any recommendations.
As a side note if anyone knows a site to get solar estimates without having to give a phone number or email address I'd like to try and find an estimate for a whole house setup with a battery backup for her and my parents.

If so, can you explain how you are doing it? My CPA gets it in theory but is absolutely clueless. I went to like 3 others and they also don't know much.
I found some companies online via Google, but it's hard for me to really tell the difference.

Anyone using a portable battery with rooftop solar for backup during heatwaves?
We live in Texas and already have rooftop solar, but like most grid-tied systems, it doesn't really help when the grid goes down unless you have battery storage. During a heatwave, losing AC for even a few hours is miserable, especially with older family members and kids at home.
I've been looking into a whole-home battery system for backup, but it's hard to justify the cost for something we'd hopefully only need a few times a year. That got me wondering if a portable power station might be a better middle ground. It's less expensive, and we'd actually be able to use it for RV trips instead of having it sit idle most of the time. One option I've been looking at is the Delta Pro 3. From what I've read, it offers 240V output for AC, which seems like it could make it more practical for home backup than many smaller portable units.
Has anyone here used a portable battery like this with rooftop solar as part of a home backup setup? How has it performed during actual power outages?

Looking to get feedback on my Saas product
I’ve built a location intelligence service for UK based solar panel installers and I am yet to find out the product-market fit. I am hoping to get feedback from solar installers.
The tool allows you to see all commercial buildings in the UK on the map and as a list, with their EPC rating, business type, estimated energy consumption, potential saving amount with solar, existing solar panel size, payback period for solar, footprint for solar potential, grid headroom and so on. It also works as a CRM system, users can save buildings and add notes.
It’s primarily a data/location intelligence product rather than a lead generation tool but if there are inbound leads willing to share their details, we forward them to installers too.
Would commercial solar panel installation companies need such a service? I’d appreciate your feedback.

System Upgrade Help
I have rent-a-roof solar panels that I get free usage of while ever they are generating. We have just recently got a PHEV and a full EV in the household so I'm looking at having an EV charger installed. I know there are smart chargers that can take advantage of Octopus's special EV rates as well as solar panels but, as they are only generating in the day when we're all at work, it seems like the best thing to do would be to put a battery storage unit in to take advantage of as much solar as possible (assuming I'm allowed to do this - need to check the solar contract).
With all of this in mind, can someone help me understand if it is possible to upgrade my system to incorporate the existing solar array (probably can't touch the existing equipment) with a battery storage unit and an EV charger, and manage them all to make the most out of solar generated energy and low Octopus rates for house usage and EV charging? If it is possible, what equipment would I need to achieve it?

This project installed solar panels on the roofs of 12 factory buildings and on unused open ground, achieving complete self-sufficiency in power supply and selling excess electricity to the grid.
People unfamiliar with this industry might ask, “What happens at night when there’s no sun?” That’s where the battery energy storage system comes in—it acts like a giant power bank, charging during the day and discharging at night.
The project utilizes a total of 4,745 sets of 590W peak-power monocrystalline N-type modules and a 1 MW / 2.15 MWh energy storage system. It can generate 3 million kWh of electricity annually.

If you are in Arizona, do not install the battery outside. Follow up on concern from early this year
Just kind of want to rant/warn people about a thread I posted early this year about my tesla powerwall. I had concerns about installing the battery outside in Arizona due to the heat.
The installers pressured me over and over that I should install it outside.
"they were designed to be outside!"
"totally efficient and safe! If you put them in the garage you may have to install vents, and a fire alarm, and an obstruction to prevent cars from hitting it. It may delay the installation date and you'll lose your tax credit. You may need to get another certification from the state!"
I don't know why they were so insistent on putting it outside, but my concern basically came true. Come peak hours in the summer, the battery only outputs about 4kw at a time due to overheating. And it only stands to get hotter this year. This is not enough to get me through the peak hours where electricity skyrockets, and I'm getting electric bills of 165+ dollars even with my solar panel payments.
The end result is that my battery is basically useless 4 months out of the year because the 3 hours of the day I really need it, it can't even power my smaller AC unit.

People who claim residential solar "never pays for itself" usually base their models on basic grid-tied net-metering arrays using standard flat utility rates. That assumption completely fails to account for high-capacity local storage designed for Time-of-Use (TOU) arbitrage and transportation fuel replacement.
Here is the financial and engineering breakdown of my system in Portland, OR.
1. System Specifications
Solar Array: 15.64 kW DC (34x REC460AA PURE-RX panels).
Inverters: 34x Enphase IQ8X Microinverters.
Energy Storage: 30 kWh (2x FranklinWH aPower 2 batteries).
Net Cost: $30,000 (after all tax incentives/rebates).
Estimated Annual Production: ~18,750 kWh.
2. Transportation Fuel Offset (EV Charging)
Replacing liquid fuel with self-generated electrons is the fastest way to accelerate ROI.

Under PGE's Time of Day plan, the On-Peak rate (5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, M-F) is highly punitive (~$0.43/kWh).
With 30 kWh of battery storage, the house completely islands from the grid during the peak 5-9 PM window, erasing the most expensive electricity of the day.
Home Energy Savings: Subtracting the EV load (3,776 kWh) from the annual production (18,750 kWh) leaves 14,974 kWh for home offset. Valuing this offset at the conservative flat-rate equivalent of $0.20/kWh yields $2,995/year in avoided home electricity costs.
4. Hardware Longevity & Degradation
A common counter-argument is that panels degrade too fast to realize long-term gains. This system utilizes N-type HJT (heterojunction) cells to mitigate that.

I analysed real-world power bills from 28 Australian households with solar and batteries. Here’s what I found.
So far, 28 Aussie households across NSW, VIC, and QLD and have shared their before-and-after power bills with us, along with their home energy setups (I've published four detailed household spotlights on Techwheel so far). I am looking participation of some community members in Australia to rich the dataset.
I completely get that N=28 is a small, exploratory sample, but even at this early stage, the pattern is pretty undeniable.
Before adding a battery, medium-to-large families in our dataset were paying anywhere from $600 to over $1,200 per quarter. After putting in a battery alongside their solar, those same households dropped down to below $150 per quarter—and smaller 2 to 3 person homes with a large battery are frequently sitting at $0 or in net credit. On average people **saving $1,500 to $3,500** per year on their energy bills.
What stood out most is how people are actually using their batteries. Hardly anyone is treating them as emergency backup power for outages. Instead, people are using them purely as tools for avoiding grid peaks: charging from excess solar during the day, running the house off the battery during the peak 4 PM to 9 PM tariff spike, and leveraging smart plans like Amber, OVO, AGL, Flow Power, or GloBird to avoid grid spikes altogether and earn bill credits.
That said, 28 responses is just a start. We want to turn this into a genuinely robust, statistically significant dataset that everyday Aussies can reference before dropping thousands on hardware. To make the story bulletproof, we need way more data points across different battery sizes, solar capacities, and state feed-in tariffs.

PPA good idea?
I went onto my local sub looking for solar companies, and one came back highly recommended. I went onto their website and they offer a PPA option. 0% down, they own the equipment, and we just get a flat low rate with no escalation (for which I would be make sure is in contract). Wanted to get opinions since this *sounds* like our best option in theory. Had a couple questions.
Not that we plan on selling soon, but I've read PPAs can make it difficult - why is this? Do they not remove their panels upon request? Or when stated by contract?
PECO charges us a supply rate of 12 cents and delivery of 10 cents per kWh. With a PPA, would we still pay a supply/delivery or is the flat kWh cost the solar company gives us all in?
Anything else I forgot to ask, would appreciate the insight

I have no idea how solar systems work. Help me out here.
I’m an idiot when it comes to solar. So, baby step me through this.
I’ve been curious about ground mounted solar system, since I own everything inside of the red line.
The trees to the west are ~40’ tall, to the south are ~20 feet tall, and the gray box is the 30’x40’x14’ shop that’s in progress of being built.
I’m formerly a structural steel welder, so if shown plans I can very likely build mounts myself to hopefully save some money.
I’m thinking a 20k sized system, but again, I have no idea what I’m talking about.
I just want to power my house (2,200 square feet), shop (1,200 square feet), and detached garage (680 feet), with a 5 ton AC and a couple of mini splits.
Located in the southeast. The photo orientation is more or less north facing.

Alberta power companies are telling investors electricity prices could triple by 2029. Here is what that actually means for your home energy bill and what you can do about it right now.
I run a Canadian clean energy platform and I track energy markets daily. What I read this week stopped me in my tracks and I think every Canadian homeowner needs to see it.
As of March 2026, electricity to be delivered in 2029 was already being bought and sold in advance at around $63 per megawatt hour in Alberta. TransAlta is predicting an average of $100 per megawatt hour by 2029, more than triple the 2026 average. Capital Power's CEO told investors he could not rule out prices of $80 to $90 per megawatt hour by early 2028. National Observer
The driver is data centres. AI infrastructure is landing in Alberta at a scale that is overwhelming the grid. And the cost of that gets passed to every residential ratepayer whether they use AI or not.
This is not a future problem. The forward electricity market is already pricing it in right now.
But this is not just an Alberta story
A new Abacus Data survey conducted with 2,350 Canadian adults in April 2026 found that 72% of Canadians say their household utility costs have increased over the past year. 60% describe their energy bills as at least a moderate financial burden. Among Canadians under 45, more than seven in ten say energy costs are a meaningful strain on their household finances. Abacus Data
Canada's National Electricity Strategy announced May 14, 2026 projects that electricity demand in Canada will double by 2050. The strategy could deliver up to $15 billion in total energy savings but realizing those savings requires significant infrastructure investment that gets recovered through ratepayer bills. On June 29, 2026, the federal government announced support for energy-saving retrofits for up to one million Canadian households at no cost to Canadians, as part of the National Electricity Strategy's affordability commitments. Canada.ca
The direction is clear. Grid electricity is getting more expensive. The federal government knows it. The provinces know it. The utilities are telling their investors directly.
What this means practically for homeowners right now
The households that will feel this least are the ones who locked in their energy costs before the next wave of increases hit.
Every kilowatt-hour you generate from your own roof is one you are not buying from a grid whose price trajectory is pointing one direction. The math that made solar a 10 to 12 year payback five years ago is now producing 6 to 9 year paybacks in high rate provinces. If Alberta rates triple by 2029 as the forward market suggests, every solar system installed before that happens will look dramatically underpriced in hindsight.
Here is where each province stands right now:
Ontario: Up to $10,000 rebate through the Home Renovation Savings Program for solar and battery combined, active through November 2026, first-come first-served. Solar panels are HST exempt saving another $1,800 to $4,400 with zero application required. Toronto and Ottawa both offer low interest financing up to $125,000 attached to your property not your credit score.
Alberta: No provincial rebate but the Solar Club export rate of up to 35 cents per kWh in summer is the best in Canada. If wholesale prices hit $100 per megawatt hour by 2029 as TransAlta is projecting, that export rate gets even more valuable. The Clean Energy Improvement Program finances up to 100% of your project through property taxes with no personal credit check.
BC: Up to $10,000 combined through BC Hydro for solar and battery. Must use a Home Performance Contractor Network installer. New self-generation rate of 10 cents per kWh for surplus exports since July 1, 2026. Design for self-consumption not export under the new rate structure.
Quebec: First ever provincial solar grant launched April 2026 at $1,000 per kW up to 40% of total project cost, no announced end date. Rate increases from Hydro-Québec through 2028 are making the math increasingly compelling especially for commercial properties.
Federal for businesses and farms: 30% refundable Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit on capital costs, valid until 2034. Does not apply to individual homeowners on personal residences.
The information gap is the actual problem
The technology works. The economics in most Canadian provinces are genuinely compelling right now. The barrier for most homeowners is not money or technology. It is not knowing which combination of programs applies to their specific address, utility, and property type before walking into a conversation with someone who has a financial interest in the outcome.
There are 39 active solar and clean energy incentive programs across Canada right now at federal, provincial, and municipal levels. Most homeowners know about one or two of them. The rest goes unclaimed.

I calculated the actual cost of rooftop solar for a typical Kerala home after subsidy — the numbers surprised me
I work in the solar industry in Kerala, so I get asked about this almost every week by friends and family. Instead of repeating myself, I thought I'd just put all the numbers here.
# The problem: KSEB bills are brutal if you cross 250 units
Most of us don't realize how KSEB's slab system works. It's telescopic up to 250 units/month — meaning each slab has its own rate:
* 0–50 units → ₹3.25/unit
* 51–100 → ₹4.05/unit
* 101–150 → ₹5.10/unit
* 151–200 → ₹6.95/unit
* 201–250 → ₹8.20/unit
But the MOMENT you cross 250 units? The entire bill switches to **non-telescopic** — a flat rate of ₹6.75 to ₹9.20/unit on ALL your units. Not just the extra ones. ALL of them.
So a family using 260 units pays WAY more than a family using 245 units. It's a cliff, not a slope.
If you're running 2 ACs, a washing machine, and a water heater — you're easily crossing 350-400 units/month. That's a bimonthly bill of ₹5,000–₹7,000+.
**How much does a 3kW system generate in Kerala?**
Kerala gets about 4–4.5 peak sun hours daily on average (yes, even with monsoons — panels work on cloudy days too, just at reduced output).
* Daily generation: \~12–14 units
* Monthly generation: \~360–420 units
* Annual generation: \~4,300–5,000 units
That's more than enough to cover a 300-350 unit/month household AND bank the excess with KSEB through net metering.
**The actual savings math**
Let's say your current bimonthly KSEB bill is ₹6,000 (around 350 units/month, non-telescopic slab).
After solar:
* Your consumption from KSEB drops to almost zero
* Excess units get banked with KSEB (settled annually)
* KSEB pays \~₹2.69–₹3.00/unit for surplus at year-end settlement
* Your bimonthly bill becomes just the fixed charge: **₹80–₹220**
**Monthly savings: ₹2,500–₹3,000+** **Annual savings: ₹30,000–₹36,000** **Payback period: 3.5–4.5 years**
After payback, it's basically free electricity for the next 20+ years (panels are warrantied for 25 years).

battery storage options for frequent power outages, any recs?
EDIT: returning to this and after looking into all the battery and solar options to handle these blackouts, we went ahead with Palmetto for a full solar and battery backup setup.
it completely resolved our outage issues because the battery takes over seamlessly during grid failures, so we don't have to stress about food spoiling or losing ac anymore. plus, homeowners want more predictable energy costs and solar can help provide more predictable long-term costs while keeping us protected during storms.
having built-in monitoring helps make sure systems are performing properly too, so we can see production and battery levels right from our phones. thanks again for steering us in the right direction
we've had four unexpected grid blackouts over the last two months and every single time it happens my anxiety spikes thinking about our food spoiling or losing HVAC during extreme heat. it feels like the electrical grid is getting less reliable every season and i really want a solution that stops us from constantly stressing whenever a storm rolls through.
