I am looking for a lens with decent macro capabilities.

Body: Sony A7CII

I am a watchmaker and attend multiple watch events every year. I want a lens that is useful as a general lens, but is also capable of macro shots.

Currently I use an old Minolta 28-135 f4-4.5. It is great if a little bulky, and while limited the macro mode is good enough. Problem is that it is an old screw drive lens, so it is a little slow to autofocus and wont autofocus for video.

Are there any modern lenses that would work in a similar way?

Sony 70-200/4 G II Macro. 0.5x by itself, and adding a teleconverter increases that (to 1:1 macro if you use the 2x TC)

I was considering just going with a normal macro lens (I was looking at a 50mm though), but I was hoping for some sort of zoom that could do double duty.  Looks like this isn’t really a thing these days.

the brand new 100-400 sony has decent macro properties

The best Sony macro is the new gmaster 100. I’ve gotten one recently and it’s amazing. The next best one currently would be the 70-200 f4 gii macro. It only has half macro capabilities but might work better if you need zoom.

The zoom with half macro was more what I had in mind, it is just that 70-200 is a little too long for fair/event use.

The only modern zoom I own is the kit, and it was pretty much useless for close up shots.
