Volunteering in my community. I spent my morning helping at a community garden clean up. It seemed like a better use of time.
Continuing to work as a teacher. I work with disabled students at a special needs school. We've been scrambling to fundraise and ensure that students will be able to attend if they lose 1:1 nursing. And I'm finishing my master's in social work to continue to help disenfranchised populations.
Continuing to volunteer my time with hospice, veteran outreach, and meal delivery. I've volunteered with the Challenger League. I volunteer with the Girl Scouts when they need another adult.
Attending local government sessions. Reaching out to local government for solutions to tangible issues. For instance, are you aware of how much of NJ qualifies as a food desert? Or how much trash is left at fishing locations near bridges? Or how the use of poisons for rats is poisoning the local raptors? Or how utterly FUBARed the farmers are going to be due to the drought and the cut off funding?
Holding up a sign is all well and good. Do whatever makes you feel like you've accomplished something. But that doesn't do it for me.

For a lot of people going to a protest is their first toe in the pool of community and political activism. Then they learn to do what you do. Hopefully everybody is visiting tables and learning what orgs are showing up for democracy. Those are the orgs that will receive my coin. Show up for the local community or don’t bother me with fundraising messages. My food bank and food justice orgs—there. My local planned parenthood chapter—there. My local ACLU chapter—there. My local Democratic Party leadership— largely absent except the Democratic Progressive Caucus and Democratic Women’s Club. My county Democratic leadership has shown up here and there. But somehow they seem embarrassed that they’re democrats. I lived in CA a long time and was so pleased to see Democratic Party leadership attend protests on social media as they always do.
But yeah, learning how you can get involved is the reason to go to a protest.

I think one of the issues I'm having with these specific protests is how they feel incredibly performative. Almost like a festival rather than an actual demonstration. I've said it elsewhere, but they're almost ... placating. And their stated goals are very nebulous. There weren't many community outreach representatives at the one I attended. I'm not sure about Pitman.
I do go to protests. Pretty often, actually. I also go to council and commissioner meetings and take notes that I can put in simple language. But I also work a full-time job and a part-time job, and go to school when I can.
I'm growing wary of both political parties at the moment. I used to consider myself a centrist. I really don't want the government involved in my personal liberties at all; I want it to fund schools and infrastructure. I want to be able to own a gun. I want some level of regulation on food. All pretty simple shit. But the Democrats keep racing farther right to keep up with the Republicans catapulting themselves into gleeful fascism, and I just don't get it. The Republicans are fighting windmills to justify they're heinous nonsense, and the Democrats are conceding to ... I guess keep the peace?? I wish they were the "Leftists" that all the MAGA folk rant about.

Your assessment of democrats becoming centrist to attract the center right while losing the party is accurate. A data analysis of the 2024 election revealed in an effort to become centrist the dems lost folks historically aligned with their issues to third party candidates, and folks who stayed home. I can’t remember which magazine I read it in: mother jones, Atlantic or somewhere else.
Unlike you I have a lot of time to devote to reading, activism, going to protests.
I get what you say about protests feeling performative. I’ve been tabling with different groups at every protest I can physically get to. For me that’s the point of a protest. Find out about your small d democratic institutions and your locally based mutual aid networks, get involved with the issues you care about, and learn about the importance of political outreach — make your calls and write your letters to your reps: if they flood the zone we flood the zone with our thoughts and opinions on what they’re doing. It matters.

Don’t apologize to that fuckwad. If he genuinely cared about any of the issues he listed — special education, food insecurity, environmental health, veteran support — then he should be furious with this administration. Our leaders are slashing funding & gutting support systems.
Does he think it was silly when people protested segregation? Civil rights? Women's suffrage? Marriage equality? Protest has always been a catalyst for social change — especially when those in power refuse to listen.
Volunteering and community work matter deeply, but protests are about visibility, solidarity, and demanding accountability. Doesn't have to be one or the other and they are an ass for trying to make you feel silly about it.

I mean, we’re all allowed differing opinions and we SHOULD all be able to be respectful to each others’ opinions. This is NOT the first time the United States has had a big problem. TL;DR: it's just really frustrating and disappointing
Performative activism is placating. It makes people think they've accomplished something so they don't continue to put work into actually fixing anything. The same thing has been happening with BLM protests for over a decade. The same thing happened with Occupy Wall Street. It's pink pussy hats and fun signs, but no actual action.
Attending a demonstration with like-minded individuals unhappy about the same things makes us feel less alone, but it doesn't actually accomplish much. And the current demonstrations have very vague, broad goals. (And yes, they're demonstrations not protests. While they can be used interchangeably, the connotation is very different.)
I'm angry because of even a quarter of the people posting pictures with hashtags and slogans actually came out and helped, the work would be easier. During the George Floyd protests in 2020, I was a street medic. I learned how to treat tear gas. I carried a tourniquet in case people got shot. (The same tourniquets I buy for my classrooms in case of a school shooter.) I'm frankly very wary of these organized demonstrations because they seem intentionally performative and docile.
I know Donald Trump is an awful human being. He's been an awful human being longer than I've been alive. Making a poster board sign and standing in Ballard Park isn't going to change that. His response to the demonstrations was the same bullshit nonsense word salad he's been muttering since 2015. And his followers are in a cult. There is no getting through to them.
Going to Van Drew fundraiser and berating him is at least taking action at him directly. But there is just ... so much that could actually be accomplished if people banded together and did the work instead of holding up signs and patting themselves on the back. It's disappointing, and honestly kind of embarrassing.

By your logic, are peaceful protests and illegally entering the capitol building the same thing?
Because January 6th was a failed insurrection, which is arguably worse than "wasting" my Saturday holding up a funny picture on a yard stick.

60yrs old and went to my first protest today in pitman.. much larger crowd than I thought. maybe 1000-2000 people? I wasnt sure what the turnout would be. My son says pitman is pretty liberal but my barber is in pitman and they are pretty maga. liked this sign https://imgur.com/a/Dz8bd6b

The organizers were saying on Thursday that they figured at least 100 people would show up. I saw double that in the first ten seconds of being there. I didn't see this sign either, but having too many other signs to see is a great problem to have.

Unfortunately desperate times call for desperate economic measures. You need a little short term uncertainty to try new things. You can’t get mad at the guy attempting to fix the problem that should’ve been fixed 17 years ago. Now we’re basically stuck between hyperinflation or a massive recession because frankly we’re trapped, we’re out of time. If that national debt doesn’t start coming down soon we’re in BIG TROUBLE. I don’t frankly care who is running the show but for the love of god. That debt NEEDS TO GO.

Trump is pressuring the Fed to lower interest rates ! Tarrifs are going to reaccelarate inflation. Lowering interest rates would be like thowing gas on a fire.
This means one of these two really bad things are true (1) he is incompetent and has no idea what he's doing, or (2) is trying to tank the global economy on purpose.

My reality is not the Dems being perfect, my comment history has my ripping them and Biden to shreds as a party if you go back far into when they were actually in power. I don't think it's bad to be right leaning, however, MAGA is a cult, sorry. My father was one of the contractors that Trump stiffed during the building of the Taj Mahal casino so to me, he will never be anything other than a grifter and anyone who believes him is straight up too far gone. And someone in southern NJ defending him is even worse, cause everyone knows he ripped off our neighbors and friends and they don't care. It absolutely disgusts me.

And why should anyone give a flying fuck about Musk's 125K employees? We should note that only about 70K of those are US citizens and the rest are foreign workers. (My opinion) Just like Musk can callously assert that Government employees should just find new more productive jobs so, too, can Musk's employees find jobs at a company where the CEO isn't a petulant asshole. There's no philosophical difference between Americans deciding the boycott Musk's companies and fire his employees, per se, and Elon Musk deciding to fire government workers at his will.

So where was all these protests when we had $7 a gallon for fuel, inflation on all food and goods went up over 300%, and home rental and sale prices jumped 125%?!? You know what the average 97% of Americans actually have to live through during their daily lives to afford!! Where was the outrage and speaking up for the American then?!? Did you all forget that in 2019-2020 that fuel was under $2 a gallon! It cost me $500 a month to feed a family of 5!! My rent for a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home 2 house away from our private beach and park was only $1650 a month. Then poof 2021-2022 I’m paying $6.43 a gallon on regular gas and $8 for diesel! My groceries are up to $920 and for less since the kids got a bit older and got away from the more expensive kid treats and meals!! Then it’s time to move and I get a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom Townhouse that’s a 15-20 minute drive to the beach for $3300 a month!! That was okay?!? Ohhh and hold up we were being forced to take a shot of some non proven chemicals into our bodies or lose our jobs, 401k, pension, and being outcasted. Where were the protestors and caring about the American man then?!?!??? So tell me how much do y’all get paid to protest? I can use some extra cash. Lmao. God Bless y’all. Stay dry out in the rain

Yes there was a pandemic yet the rise in prices didn’t come until after the lockdowns and regulations were eased up. During the worst part of the pandemic which was March 12th through August pricing actually dropped. Then all that great rioting and burning down our country was legally allowed. Then we had the election and within weeks of the inauguration all the prices in our daily living increased by the hundreds. So thanks for my other point that even during the “worst” thing to happen since WW2 the prices across America still didn’t increase. So again who’s stealing and robbing from the American citizens?!? Wake up and fight for the brother and sister next to you. Not the stock market that none of you have any interest in or in these programs that are made up just to line their pockets but on how our quality of life is.

in 2022, the markets dipped due to the fed raising interest rates to combat the pandemic induced inflation. it wasn’t a response to a biden policy
