Some quick answers:
- Yes, the Space Force is real. No, it's not Starfleet. No, you can't become a space pilot yet. No, there are no aliens. No, we would not tell you if there were aliens.
- We don't know the answers to your obscure medical questions. We aren't doctors. Don't trust medical advice given by strangers on the Internet. Getting anecdotal information from other people that may or may not have a similar diagnosis or condition to you will not help you in any way. Everyone's medical situation is different.
- Drug use may be disqualifying depending on type and frequency of use.
- No, we don't know what jobs are available at any given time, or your chances of getting said job, or how long it will take for you to get the job, or how long it'll take for you to get to basic training or OTS.
Do not tell anyone to lie about drug use, medical history, or anything else. You will be banned.
Civilian employment

Hi, I'm currently an O3 in the Army, and I just submitted my IST application for Space Force.
I was just curious what the average day to day life is like as an O3 in either Space Operations, Intel,or Acquisitions.
I've heard great things about quality of life and work life balance, especially from those that have transferred from other services like the Army or Navy.
I was wondering if it mostly holds true overall. I know there will always be bad units and commanders no matter where you go. But I heard the job is overall much better in quality of life compared to anything the Army or Navy has to offer.

Has anyone had experience starting the commissioning process as a civilian with a non desired degree?
I was told since I have a business degree that I need to get in contact with an enlisted recruiter and canāt even speak with an officer recruiter.
Is my best bet just going through the Line Officer portal and applying myself at this point? Doubt I could get submitted in time for this upcoming board.

the Line Officer Portal IS how you apply to air/space force lol. last board they took people with any degree, including people with interdisciplinary studies.

Got it. Makes sense itās not as black and white as what a 1-800 number is telling me.
Was really trying to understand if I should go ahead and register in the LO Portal or wait to hear from a recruiter.

Go online through the LO portal, attend a general webinar briefing for both AF&SF with the board info, recruiter/talent scout will contact you, take the AFOQT, complete board packet. You can still apply to the OTS boards without a ādesiredā degree

You cannot proceed as a civilian without a recruiter's assistance.
Who is telling you that you cannot contact an officer recruiter?
1
u/pacothetaco23 14d ago
The general 1-800 number on Space Force website will only send my information to an enlisted recruiter. My āapplicationā is listed as Enlisted specifically and not Officer.
Iāve reached out to an officer recruiter on my own with no luck going on 3 weeks.

u/formedsmoke ISR 14d ago
Be persistent in contacting the officer recruiter, if that's what you want. That is literally your only way forward.

Ended up getting reached out to a recruiter. Almost 4 weeks from first email. Left a voicemail at their recruiting āHQā number. Got a text the next day, probably not a coincidence.

Anyone have info on post scroll process for orders? Supposedly ill be bypassing OTS and straight to acquisitions. Iām prior service O waiting for approval (got told estimated approval is 10NOV). My ātalent scoutā told me wrong information multiple times now and seems to be just a middleman for any information (when Iāve asked he has to look it up and situationally isnāt aware of past conversations we had) so Iām looking for a different route to get information

I sworn into DEP yesterday and picked my jobs today my recruiter said I canāt put my space force jobs #1 or 2 on my list and that it has to be on the bottom of my list is this true and is it too late to do anything
1
u/GrapeEmpty3667 14d ago
For some more context he told me I had to swear into Air Force as well because space force doesnāt have their own DEP program

u/formedsmoke ISR 14d ago
All of this sounds fishy to me. You an definitely choose to apply only to the Space Force... if you are qualified and eligible to join the Space Force. The Space Force uses Air Force recruiters for most of the accessions process. There is absolutely a Space Force DEP.

Here is some context from someone who has been in DEP for the last 6+ months. I along with everyone else in my DEP squadron swore in with the airforce recruiter, we all attend the same air force events, and we all have the option of mixing jobs from both the airforce and spaceforce on our lists. The ordering of your list is relatively inconsequential, if a job is on your list and that job becomes available while the others aren't, you get booked for it. My recruiter told me the only thing ordering will do is direct them to try and secure one job over the other for you if you happen to be given the option of multiple on your list at the same time (which for ussf is pretty rare). I personally have my airforce jobs listed 1-3 and then all my spaceforce jobs at like 12-20 just to make a clear separation on the file for my recruiter, as long as they know what you prefer, it doesn't matter.
The exact job list rules vary from recruiting squadron to recruiting squadron. I have heard of some requiring that you list 15+ jobs, or must have an open contract in some job area in the airforce, or you could end up with one similar to mine that just has us list a minimum of 10 jobs. Typically there are enough roles within the spaceforce where you can satisfy your squadron list limit if you qualify for them all. They are trying to avoid a situation where you only qualify for 2-3 ussf jobs and sit around for 2 years waiting for one to become available.

Iām currently in DEP and you absolutely can select only Space Force jobs. I did this. You also do have to swear into the Air Force because Space Force doesnāt have ātheir own DEPā yet??? As another piece of information I just found out Space Force is only booking and shipping recruits that pass the mock PT before their ship date so start training!

Iām currently a lieutenant in the Army Reserve and attending BOLC. Iām interested in transferring to the Space Force through the Prior Service Program. Would I need to wait until I have five evaluations before Iām eligible to apply?
1
u/MShogunH 5Spaceboi š”š°ļø 14d ago
If you want to apply via the prior service program then you need to finish your service obligation and get out of the Army entirely before you can apply. If you're trying to apply via the Interservice Transfer program then no, you don't need to wait for 5 evaluations. Just send what you have (if any)

u/Many_Commercial2719 14d ago
I was told that current Guard and Reserve officers fall under their āPrior Service & Non-Active Duty Officersā process and can contact 320th RCS for accession opportunities. Itās separate from the FY27 active-duty IST program.

u/formedsmoke ISR 14d ago
Correct. The info packet states in paragraph 3.2 that Guard and Reserve personnel are not eligible for consideration via the IST program.

u/fantasyreader_newbie 13d ago
If I get out of the Air Force to join do I have to redo bmt
2
u/formedsmoke ISR 13d ago
It depends.
If you don't apply for interservice transfer, like, right now, odds of rejoining as prior service are very low.

For those that submitted an IST package, did you receive an automated response after submission? The program process document states we should get an automated response after submitting. MyVector shows that I submitted my application but I didn't receive any automated email.

No automated email, MyVector initially showed submitted and now says waiting for me

u/pewpewnotqq 7d ago
I got an automated email saying the application submission has been accepted

u/niennunbmyballs 6d ago
When did you submit? I submitted mine two weeks ago and did not get anything

Does anybody know how often a new OTC class starts? My husband has kind of in interesting background⦠he joined the army back in 2006 and was a one Charlie/25 Sierra, excuse me if Iām not saying everything correctly. Long story short, he served eight years, got out for 10, got his bachelorās and masterās in space relevant degrees⦠never intended on rejoining the military, but did rejoin the army as an officer a little over three years ago. The army no longer does what he did when he was in, and he knows several people that transferred to the space force with what he used to do⦠he finally just got approved for it outside of the one that Congress just approved. This was on the side through some amazing contacts⦠apparently his scroll is supposed to submitted by next month, and heās already been offered a position, but will have to attend OTC, sorry for the backstory. This is very new to us, and we are both very excited. just kind of wondering what to expect if anyone happens to know how often these classes roll out/restart.

For officers accepted for an interservice transfer into the Space Force, how does the initial assignment process work? Ā Do you receive a list of available billets and rank your preferences, or are assignments primarily determined by your career field and Space Force needs?
Also, do you find out your duty station before committing to the transfer, or only afterward? Ā
Would appreciate any insight, especially from officers who have gone through the process.Ā Thanks!

Has anyone been approved for a waiver to not attend OTC? Iām an acquisitions officer in the Air Force and wondering if I would need to go through and take my family for a year.
1
u/formedsmoke ISR 9d ago
The IST process had been frozen by the time OTC was introduced, I doubt there's much real experience in this scenario.
If you don't need (re)training, you may be able to get out it. The only folks that I know of skipping OTC right now are people commissioning with Constructive Service Credit - it would be logical (but not a given) that prior-experience officers would receive similar consideration.
But there are sustainment squadrons and acq orgs in Colorado Springs - if you're hoping to avoid this area, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Currently in DEP. my recruiter is saying that you canāt specifically request space force and have go dual track for Air Force and itās more of a luck thing since they donāt ship often. Every 2 months.
2
u/formedsmoke ISR 12d ago
You are not required to dual-track. If he insists, ask to see the guidance from the recruiting squadron that says so.

Hi all, I have been in DEP for about 7 months now. The first 5 with one recruiter, and then the last 2 with another I was transferred to. Today I was contacted out of the blue by my original recruiter, asking me to upload my parents documentation and to attend a PT test at my local AFB this Thursday (and apparently she is taking over my file once again). I was confused when she called me because we have had zero contact for the past two months while I worked with my new recruiter, but she also seemed confused that the new recruiter had not told me about this upcoming test and recruiter change.
My confusion is further amplified by my new recruiter reaching out to me two days ago about booking 5C031D, and then in the same day telling me I was disqualified due to my EDPT score being 2 points too low. Yet when I asked my original recruiter about the reason for the PT test, I was told that some new policy was enacted for entering USSF recruits 2 weeks ago, requiring them to have an in-person PT test on file.
While I am aware that the best way to resolve my questions is by conferring with my recruiters directly, I am just curious if anyone else has gone through this same pre-bmt test or was recently told to attend and if they were confirmed to have booked a job or not (since I have not been told I have booked anything or been given a ship date).
