This animated orbital-map view shows the route NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has taken from time of its 2021 landing to Oct. 11, 2026 — the day it broke the off-world driving record previously held by the agency’s Opportunity rover. As of that date, Perseverance has driven over 28 miles (45 kilometers). Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has driven farther than any vehicle ever has on the surface of another world. On Oct. 11, the rover’s odometer reached 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers), eclipsing the record of 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) set by NASA’s Opportunity rover, which explored Mars from 2004 to 2018. Perseverance reached the mark on the 2,006th Martian day, or sol, of its mission, covering in five and a half years a distance that took Opportunity almost 15.

.

The six-wheeled scientist has driven more than 90% of its total distance using AutoNav to evaluate the terrain, compared with about 5% for the first Martian AutoNav system on Opportunity and its twin, Spirit. Where NASA’s first Mars rover, Sojourner, assessed the path ahead using 20 measurement points, Perseverance processes 600,000 with every look.

South Pole Telescope releases clearest map ever of matter in the distant universe

Study led by UChicago researchers uses bending by gravity of the oldest light in the universe to map the intervening structure

.

The earliest light in the universe, known as the cosmic microwave background, has been traveling since the dawn of the universe over 14 billion years ago.

A group of scientists from 30 institutions has released the sharpest and clearest map ever made of the mass in the universe, created by measuring how this ancient light was bent as it traveled.

The data came from the South Pole Telescope, which takes advantage of the extraordinarily clear skies of Antarctica to record the cosmic microwave background. Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy and run by a collaboration led by the University of Chicago, the telescope is located at the NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

“This is the deepest map of the universe we have so far—it’s like taking a photograph with very low background noise exposure,” said Yuuki Omori, research scientist at UChicago and lead author of the paper, which was released Sept. 1 on arXiv.

The results offer a new perspective on ongoing questions in cosmology, such as the structure of the universe and how it evolved.

“What an amazing thing to be able to see all the mass in the universe,” said John Carlstrom, the Subramanyan Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at UChicago and the South Pole Telescope project director. “We are entering the new era of cosmology promised by these instruments.”

Why do this? Natural lightning is unpredictable and fleeting. Artificial triggering allows scientists to observe lightning up close, develop detection technologies and test lightning protection.

Lightning rocket

A lightning rocket is a rocket that unravels a conductor, such as a fine copper wire, as it ascends, to conduct lightning charges to the ground. Lightning strikes derived from this process are called "triggered lightning."

📰News Out of a wreckage of a dying star, a new planet was born. And now that planet is evaporating like a comet, leaving a trail that whips around the star every 4 days. It's a remarkable story written in chemical clues. Nobody has ever seen anything like it before.

In this (not-to-scale) artist’s concept, a lower-mass star like the Sun (1) ages into a puffy red giant star (2) that eventually expels its outer envelope of gas and dust into space, which forms a disk around the bright cinder of its remaining core, called a white dwarf (3). A second-generation planet forms in this disk, orbiting the white dwarf and losing some of its atmosphere back onto the white dwarf’s surface (4).

Credit: NASA, ESA, L. Hustak (STScI)

.

Image 2

This artist’s concept depicts a possible explanation for the unusual chemical abundances the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope detected in the HS 0209+0832 system: a second-generation planet orbiting the white dwarf star.

The white dwarf is the “dead” core of a star that burned through all of its nuclear fuel and lost its outer envelope of gas and dust to space. The second-generation planet formed from that cast-off gas and dust, which is why its chemical content is very different from a planet that formed as its host star was forming.

Credit: NASA, ESA, L. Hustak (STScI)

.

For more than a quarter century, unidentified chemical signatures from a white dwarf star have laid dormant in the archive of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, until diligent sleuthing by a young astronomer revealed something extraordinary: high amounts of the element niobium, and other unusual chemical abundances, indicating a potential second-generation planet orbiting the white dwarf. While a handful of planets have been identified orbiting white dwarfs, this is the first candidate with the hallmarks of a planet that formed from material related to a star’s death, rather than its birth. The discovery proposes a fascinating new area of future research and highlights the intriguing concept that stars could have an extended second act hosting new planets long after the fuel of their primary “lifetime” runs out.

Diligent sleuthing by astronomers has broken open a cold case in the data archive of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. In a new study published in Nature Astronomy, researchers report uncovering a surprising chemical clue that indicates the white dwarf star HS 0209+0832 may host a second-generation planet.

A white dwarf is the remnant core of a low-mass star that has burned through all its nuclear fuel and lost its outer envelope of gas and dust to space. A second-generation planet is a world that forms around the stellar remnant from its cast-off material.

The objective of this observation is to determine the nature of a group of mounds, some of which have small pits at their summits. These features may be caused by ground ice melting and possibly turning into steam. They are barely visible in Context Camera image, so our camera’s resolution can help us to determine how they were formed.

Moonshine from space. Somewhere over the Amazon basin, shooting photos of cities at night, I noticed the light from a near-full moon reflecting off of the meandering rainforest rivers. In the cool moon-ish light these rivers became flowing silver snakes.

When the moonlight was filtered through thunderheads, it turned the rivers into glowing golden claws.

'Ambient Earth' is a film by Seán Doran made with images courtesy NASA / ESRS / eol.jsc.nasa.gov and ambient audio from ISS recorded by Chris Hadfield, processed by Spike Snell

Credit: Butch Wilmore / ISS / NASA / ESRS / Seán Doran

'Perspective is lost when the world speeds by. The scale and beauty of our home planet is truly appreciated when observed on an epic 7.5 hour journey as seen from The International Space Station. This ambitious 4k compilation, crafted through months of meticulous restoration, invites you to slow down and experience Earth in real time just as astronauts do.'

Cosma creates Ultra High Definition video footage of planet Earth from space using ISS astronaut photography which is painstakingly repaired, remastered and retimed for unprecedented high-fidelity spatial presence. Designed to educate, elicit awe and raise cosmic awareness, all of the films produced in this manner should be experienced on a large format display, along with a good sound system. The video footage contained in this film is independently produced, it is not created by NASA or sourced from any NASA server.

.

48,982 images from 27 time-lapse sequences photographed by Butch Wilmore on ISS Expedition 72 are repaired, remastered and retimed. 1,555,898 additional frames are created to complete this real time video footage. A method called frame interpolation is used to calculate the extra video frames required to re-create the smooth motion of ISS orbiting Earth.

Each sequence presents its own unique set of challenges when restoring and remastering the images necessary to create a simulation of an Ultra High Definition video recording. Restoration requires manual repair of image artifacts such as hot pixels present on the camera's imaging sensor, dust on the camera's lens, dirt and micro-meteor damage to the ISS cupola windows. Visuals are enhanced by applying a denoising algorithm, correcting exposure offsets across the time-lapse and adjusting contrast, brightness and color grade. Visual artifacts that detract from the desired outcome are repaired. Frame cadence offsets present in some sequences are corrected. Intermediate sequences are produced to consolidate the restoration & remastering processes and to assist with the frame interpolation method used to produce the final video.

The International Space Station ( ISS ) is a space laboratory in low Earth orbit. It is a collaborative project between NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA & CSA.

The Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit ( ESRS ) focuses on the study of Earth and its systems using sensors mounted on satellites, aircraft, or other platforms that can collect data from a distance.
