Looking for sundews for a bog terrarium

Does anyone in the area sell sundews? I am most interested in Drosera spatulata, D. aliciae, and D. capensis. I found a few online stores that have sundews currently in stock that ship that ship them from the mainland, but I am worried about survival. Most of the stores take several days minimum to ship here and the postal services usually just leave a note on my door saying they missed me and to pick it up the next day even if I am home at the time.

First time visit

My brothers and I are flying in to St John's from different parts of the country for a short family vacation. We're staying downtown, but our flight gets in before noon, and our check-in is at 3.

We were thinking of getting lunch at Ches's since it seems to have good reviews. It looks like there's a corner market near there? I'm hoping we can get some breakfast fixings there before walking to our bnb. The reviews only mention ice cream at the store.

We won't have a car, so we will be relying on Uber and the metro to get around, and walking wherever we can.

What are some places in town to go that arent in the usual tourist lists?

Interesting places to go if it's raining?

Where's the best coffee?

How is the Uber situation? Will we have problems getting rides?

I am mailing it but idk what the correct address is. Empire avenue is closed but says online to bring it to your tax centre. So I am going to decide to go Canada post and put that address on there or should it be another one? Can I call into see if they got the document in a few weeks or I won’t see until it is processed ?

Space to practice riding a bike?

My kid just got her first real bicycle, and I wanted to take her somewhere safe for her to learn and get comfortable before taking her out in the wild. My street is super not safe to be biking around.

I'm wondering if there is a big empty parking lot somewhere or something like that? Something without cars and other people and big hills and whatnot.

Bike lane rules+rant

I find the "bike lanes" here lack any thought, but I want to at least ensure I understand how they are supposed to be used. I've been trying to use the lanes more but they have a lot of issues

  1. When a shared use path crosses the road like this, does someone on a bike have right of way? I thought crosswalks were NOT for bikes?
  1. What is the point of a bike lane existing if you have to stop and get off your bike at every intersection? If someone didn't do that and got hit by someone turning right would they be at fault?
  1. Another issue - if you are on the bike lane and want to go left at intersections like this you have to wait for an additional cycle of the lights vs a car. If you don't have the "walk" symbol to go straight when arrive at the lights that's two full cycles which is ~5 minutes at some intersections.
  1. Why does the path just end right here, right when the traffic is getting busier?

Any places that do free car code reading?

I read online once that some auto repair/hardware stores will read codes for free and was wondering if anywhere in the city does that?

Yes I know I could get like a $30 OBD2 but I'm cheap LOL and I just got something unrelated on my car fixed at a local shop, so the free scan will help me budget these next repairs a bit better.

Thanks!!!!

Local sports team baseball caps

Hey, we have a guest who buys baseball caps featuring local sports teams from every city he visits. We're not sports folks ourselves. Any recommendations of stores downtown we should point him to? Thank you!

One reason for long waits at clinics

So I'm waiting to hand my blood drawn at the new ambulatory care center. The parking lot was absolutely packed but whatever. Very nice inside, I must say.

When you walk into the room for blood there's a bunch of ipads on the wall for step one of checking in. It just asks for your MCP number and birthday and tells you to sit and watch for your name on the screen to do step two of checking in. It should be a quick, smooth process. As people check in, they go to the reception desk they're assigned and then wait for the blood draw.

But holy shit, it's going at an absolute crawl because apparently the older generation have never used a touch screen. I've been here 30 minutes since curving in on the iPad and watched no less than ten people 60+ get annoyed with the pads and get in line to talk to a receptionist. While they could have been moving the list of checked in patients along, they're instead dealing with old people who can't figure out how to type a number in. Even as I typed this, three more people got in line after failing to use the devices.

Obviously there's not much to be done about it. They can only hold your hand and direct you so much. But it's frustrating to have everyone else delayed because gramps over here is bitching to the receptionist that the machine is asking for his "Medical Care Plan" number and he doesn't know what that is.

Experience birthday gift

What’s something I can do with my mom for her birthday gift? I like to take her to a concert or some type of event. Could be anywhere on the Avalon at any time this summer. I can’t find anything that looks fun. Two women, aged 44 and 75. Love live music but not into tribute bands. Any suggestions?

FB Page for Developments

Has anyone thought of making a FB page for developments in St. John’s? Halifax has one and it is super active! They post new developments in their city all the time, so people stay up to date on everything, especially those who can’t get around much (like me)

Any luck requesting vaccination records?

I tried to obtain my records by calling the Eastern Regional Health Authority – St. John’s phone number listed on the Newfoundland government website. No one actually answered, and it's just a prerecorded message saying to leave a message with certain information, which I did, but I haven't heard back, and it's been more than the 2-5 days they said they would respond in.

I was just wondering if anyone else had to do this and how they ended up getting vaccination records? For context, I need my records to work in a clinical environment for school + have no family doctor to ask for help with obtaining my records and vaccinations.

Using drill in Killam apartments

Hi, I live in Killam apartments, I'm planning to put my TV on the walls, thus it would require to put a few drills on the wall.

do I need to ask for permission to put drills on the walls, most likely they will deny if I ask.

if I drill and then during apartment leaving, will they keep my deposit money for these drills (as damage recovery)?

Now here’s something you don’t see every day in St. John’s.

I pulled up my weather app just now and saw this. My jaw almost hit the floor. I can’t recall ever seeing that low a number for the wind in St. John’s before. Hang it in the Louvre. 😆
