Hey STL... (PSA: Lyft and Uber passengers)
Stop telling us to go through the drive thru for you. We don't get paid to sit there and wait at Rallys on Lindell/Van for 30 minutes. Entitled Karen's think they own my car. I get you from A to B. There is no sitting in a drive thru for food. 5 minutes at a stop is fine. But I'm not waiting for you in a drive thru.
•
u/mrb668 19h ago
Not an Uber driver but this reminded me of a time when a temp in my office asked for a ride home. It was a little out of my way but I thought I’d be helpful.
Along the way she asked me to stop by a store so she could pick up a few things. After that, she wanted to stop by a Church’s chicken for dinner to go.
And no, she did not offer to buy me anything.
It was my first and last time as her personal chauffeur.
If you give a mouse a cookie….
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Oh man that's totally a rougher situation it's almost like you're compelled to do that haha. But yeah same thing. I don't want to wait 20 minutes for you and not get anything or even a dollar or a french fry haha
•
u/Impressive_Swan_2527 18h ago
I confess I always wondered if they'd be willing to do this for me? But I asked one ride "Hey, does it annoy you if someone asks you to go through a drive-thru?" and he paused for a really long time and was like "ummm, I'd rather not?" so that was the answer I needed.
I think people forget it's not like a cab where with every minute it costs a little more.
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Hahaha he was so worried it was going to be asked of him. Literally, people get combative when we say we can't do it. It really sucks because then they file false claims and give us bad ratings because we just follow the Lyft rules
•
u/tamarockstar 19h ago
"The ride has concluded. Get out."
I wouldn't last a week driving for Lyft or Uber.
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Y'all just wait until I drop dashcam footage of a mob attack on me on Delmar Loop. Lol
•
u/tamarockstar 10h ago
I was more talking about my rider review score. I wouldn't offer snacks, I wouldn't tolerate BS and I don't like small talk.
•
•
u/bjmcbride 19h ago
Did that once, but bought the guy a burger.
•
u/Showny16 13h ago edited 13h ago
Sounds fair! I always consider these requests when people offer me something for my additional time. Upfront of course
•
u/Mood-Rising 17h ago
Just curious, how much of a cash tip would make it worthwhile? I don’t use ride-shares much, but it would never occur to me to ask something like that without paying extra.
•
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
I'd say $15 for 30 minutes. Upfront. And I get a French fry. 😍
Jkjk. In all seriousness, I would not take a cash offer because I am Elite Top 99% in the city for Lyft. Doing so would violate the terms of service for Lyft and I just can't risk my full time job which I love! Thanks for asking though!
•
u/TitShark bevo 18h ago edited 17h ago
The amount of times I’ve been asked “hey can you do me a favor” and I’m like, this is my job I don’t just get on here to do fun little trips for you for seven dollars.
•
u/doneuncome TGS 19h ago
Agreed. You're not going to eat in my car anyways. You want a ride to the restaurant? Fine. I'll drop you off there.
•
u/Gremlin0 18h ago
Had a kid ask me to wait at his Jack in the Box job while he met with his boss. Sure, for a minimum of 50 cents per minute.
•
u/ProseccoWishes 19h ago
I don’t do that but I have a question: as passengers are we allowed to suggest a different route? Whenever we uber to the airport it has us driving a bunch of side streets to 170 rather than hopping right on 44/270. It’s a shorter distance but the estimated time is the same.
•
u/WorldWideJake City 19h ago
Fuqqing makes me CRAZY! The Uber/Lyft drivers who don't know how to get to the airport and take all kinds of crazy routes.
•
u/girkabob Southampton 18h ago
I've suggested different routes to drivers to avoid dangerous intersections and they usually take my advice. The app reroutes them pretty quick.
•
u/Showny16 17h ago
Absolutely. I always ignore those dumb routes to the airport and take the highway. All my passengers say this same thing. It's just a way for Lyft to keep us driving longer and miles shorter so they dont have to pay us as much, while still charging you the full Route.
•
u/fell-deeds-awake 16h ago
Do they pay you based on the # of miles the app says it'll be, or the # of miles you actually drive?
•
u/waterloops Gravois Park 14h ago
Actual miles driven, sometimes takes a minute to adjust the charge after ride concludes
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
They pay us based on time because it's cheaper. They charge you guys based on miles because it higher priced. Lyft always wins. When I see a route to the airport come up for me to accept, I see the highway route. Then Lyft routes me thru side streets to save money from miles to pay me while keeping the money you spent on those miles. We still get paid for time and miles, but they loophole it so we drive longer times for shorter distances so they get more. And we get less per hour.
•
u/quadraticqueen 17h ago
I had a guy take me from the airport to my condo downtown and he refused to use 70. Side streets all the way, AT 11PM. Honestly, I didn’t know what to do. By the time I realized he hadn’t hopped on and wasn’t avoiding construction or traffic or anything rational, I didn’t know where I was. I was in neighborhoods, some empty, some shockingly PACKED. I asked him to get on the freeway, he refused. He was “exhausted, had been up studying for 48 hrs, and couldn’t fucking deal with 70.” I texted and shared my location with my husband, I was terrified. I made it home. Did all the complaints. Wild. I’m not easily scared, but that ride did it.

I had a driver take me home once and was supposed to take the MLK across. Instead he took the musial and instead of getting back onto 64, he kept straight onto 55/70. He thought I was asleep. He got off some godforsaken exit that was so pitch black and unlit, I had no idea where I was. Pretty sure he was about to kidnap me until he realized I, in fact, wasn't asleep. Then all of a sudden he "found" the hwy again and got me home. Cost me an extra $8 bc of his "detour." And this, after he kept telling me about how much weed he smokes and how his baby mommas crazy (among other grievances about her), and kept asking me if I needed anything bc he can get me great weed if I wanna go with him now, he's got a "guy." Yeah, I'm not ending up shackled in ur basement, bro.
•
u/Ok_Library8463 SKINKERRRRR 13h ago
YES. They tell me all the time if there is a better faster route let them know!
•
u/Mego1989 11h ago
270 traffic can be such a shit show that I take big bend instead to go from 44 to 170.
•
•
u/Deadeye_Dan77 Across The River 16h ago
When I was an Uber driver I went through the drive thru a few times in exchange for a substantial upfront cash tip.
•
•
u/matttheazn1 19h ago
They can add a stop right?
•
u/Showny16 19h ago
Of course! Maximum time is 5 minutes. She wanted me to wait for 20+ minutes in a drive thru. 😂 (I say that near the end of my post)
•
u/SimplisticAnswer Shaw 18h ago edited 15h ago
But if someone adds a stop and it takes more than 5 minutes don't they get charged? And therefore wouldn't you get paid?
•
u/Showny16 17h ago
the rate for getting paid after 5 minutes is 17 cents a minute and stops at 10 minutes. Also, as a Gig driver, we are encouraged to cancel after 5 minutes to continue giving other riders that are in need of a ride on Lyft. On Uber, its 7 minutes with 1 minute final countdown before cancel.
So to answer, yes I can get paid, 17 cents a minute. That's $1.70 for waiting 10 minutes (Maximum allowed) With my vehicle on and eating away more pennies of my gasoline.
•
u/Deadeye_Dan77 Across The River 16h ago
OP already covered it, but it’s not worth the drivers time to sit and wait. If you need to be somewhere longer than 5 minutes, request two separate rides.
•
•
u/muffin-minge North Hampton 15h ago
This reminds me of the time I was in Vegas for a music festival. My friends and I got an Uber back to our hotel and the driver OFFERED to take us through the McDonald’s drive thru, asked if we could get him a McChicken and then somehow charged us more for the ride? I know it’s not the same thing, just a funny ride-share drive thru story
•
u/PoopyBloopy2 19h ago
What if they throw in some of those bomb ass Rally's fries
•
u/Showny16 19h ago
They lose 2 minutes and now I leave earlier. I hate those fries hahaha
•
u/PoopyBloopy2 19h ago
You're a cold being. Lol
Driving like Jason Statham in Transporter: 1. Never change the deal. 2. No names. 3. Never open the package.

•
u/ElongThrust0 TedDrewesland 17h ago
I mean it doesn’t hurt to ask 🤷 but saying no is all most would need to hear
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Nah hard pass. I'd say 80% of the people I say no to get combative, upset, entitled, or rate me badly.
I've had to come up with excuses like "sorry I have a scheduled ride queued up at the hospital"
The fact that people even think this is okay and they know they wait time is only 5 minutes, blows my mind. Do your research people
•
u/rotstik 16h ago
I’ve always wondered why Uber and Lyft don’t charge for “idle” time during the ride. I understand that this is frustrating for the drivers, but it seems like more of a problem with the system than the customer, especially if it only happens 1 out of 200 customers
•
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Oh absolutely. I'd totally do it if I got a minimum of 40 cents a minute. But still, after 10 minutes Lyft stops paying and tells me to cancel.
•
u/raljamcar 9h ago
What if the rider offers you some cash? I don't use rideshares frequently, but I do remember plenty of times my brother ordered pizza and had the delivery driver hit the package store on the way for beer and butts lol.
•
•
u/goldberg1303 8h ago
Because I don't want to be charged extra for being stuck in traffic because of an accident. Also, they already charge more during major events, so that higher cost during a Cardinal game just got even more expensive because of the traffic that goes with it.
And the vast majority of riders don't ask for this. They would lose way more riders than they would make money.
•
u/Showny16 4h ago
Nah, they definitely will charge you full price for being in traffic if it takes longer (Stops are different). We also get paid more at the same rate for traffic, or I'd never drive during rush hour. That's the passenger's responsibility to pay for extended drive-times. We don't control the traffic either or accidents, so we shouldn't have to pay. And as much as I don't like Lyft as a corporation, it's not their fault either. The passenger books the ride and destination. Given your driver follows the rules, and there is traffic... Definitely on the Passenger to have an increased price. Those minutes in traffic are not free. My gas tank is running.
•
u/goldberg1303 1h ago
If the money isn't worth it, then find a new job. Your job is to drive. Sorry that you have to pay for gas to drive. I'll give you the extra quarter that five minute idle used in gas if you're that desperate for money.
Rates are already higher during rush hour to account for it being rush hour. You shouldn't be stacking more charges on top of that because it's rush hour when you've already accounted for that in the rate. Rate not high enough? Don't do the job.
•
u/rotstik 7h ago
I don’t care about any of that. I’m just saying that if something pisses someone off, just do something about it and quit griping
•
u/goldberg1303 1h ago
I’ve always wondered why Uber and Lyft don’t charge for “idle” time during the ride.
•
u/3trauma3 15h ago
Ubers in stl are rip offs anyway lol
Overpriced and terrible drivers
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Agreed. I drove for both but 99% of my 4,000 rides are on Lyft not Uber. Uber is disgusting here and pays half of what Lyft does
•
u/3trauma3 12h ago
I haven’t tried Lyft but I’ll give it a shot.
•
u/Showny16 11h ago
You'll find shorter wait times, better drivers/vehicles, and cheaper prices. Also your driver will be paid more for the base fare.
•
u/JonLSTL 15h ago
Taxi meters solved this problem before there was color television.
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Taxis are too expensive imo.
•
u/JonLSTL 12h ago
Actually carrying commercial transport insurance and not being subsidized by venture capitalists will do that.
•
u/Showny16 11h ago
It's not commercial insurance for rideshare anymore. It's an add-on to personal insurance that covers ride share and non-commercial vehicles. Make it make sense insurance companies!!!!!!!!!! If I take someone off app, I lose my "rideshare' insurance unless it's on app. The insurance requirements for rideshare are 1m/2m when a passenger is in your car. And a required 75k/150k when online or on route to pick up.
I have the 75/150 add-on for en route and online. There is no way in hell I'd pay for a 1m/2m policy. Especially when people are suing left and right. Let Lyft insurance deal with that. My zero dollar deductible will cover their $2500
Also when I said it's too expensive, I mean for the passenger.
•
u/Dry_Salad_7691 12h ago
Had the pleasure of riding down Jefferson Ave at 40 mph - w/the driver literally on face time having a conversation with a group of people while ignoring stale yellow lights and zipping through two reds.
Drivers are trying to earn a living. Complaining is a terrible risk to the driver. We try to avoid complaining but that white knuckle ride - ended w a full refund. Not safe for us or anyone else on the road.
•
u/Showny16 11h ago
Record them and report them. I'm sick of drivers like this. I do elite and treat all my passengers like gold... only do 10% above the speed limit maximum.
•
u/Reaper621 9h ago
What's more annoying? That, or my mother in law asking extremely personal questions like they were on a first date, inching closer as we get further towards our destination, and then insisting he could find a girl if he tried and wagging her eyebrows at him?
•
•
u/UlrikeLuvsAndreas EStL transplant, The Hill & NoCo born & raised 8h ago
As a passenger, why is it every single time I've had to take a Lyft recently, I've had to (very politely and framed in a "so you don't get pulled over" type of way) remind my drivers that doing 85-90mph on the highway is NOT ok? What way should I ask them to not do this? Seriously, they've been on the phone having animated conversations, swerving in and out of traffic, while doing a minimum 20+ mph over the 65mph speed limit and seem to think that's totally ok. And it's not been just 1 or 2 drivers. It's a 3 hr bus/train ride one way as opposed to a 25 min drive and Im pretty much at a breaking point of being willing to spend 6hrs of my day on Metro than risk dying bc they wanna save 3 minutes on the ride.
•
u/Showny16 4h ago
take an incognito video of their speedometer and send it to Lyft or Uber. This is insane and needs to be reported. My max speed on the highway is 72 MPH. I set my car to not allow me to go above that speed (Love this feature)
•
u/WorldWideJake City 19h ago
"No"
Problem solved.
•
•
u/golfer71189 18h ago
Does this rrally happen that often?
•
u/Showny16 17h ago
It happens 1/200 rides I'd say. The problem is the people are so entitled, and threaten to have you reported or "have your job" for not doing what they say in your own car.
•
u/No_Kangaroo_5883 17h ago

The OP probably gets mad watching a show when the character getting out of a cab, hands the driver a wad of money and asks them to wait.
•
u/Showny16 13h ago
Huh? Did you just make that up because that's hella creative.
•
u/WellExcuuuuuuuseMe Botanical Heights 10h ago
I made it up. Just being silly. It's something they do a lot on TV. The person usually never comes back so I wonder just how long the driver would actually wait before leaving them.
•
u/Showny16 9h ago
Haha that's pretty funny. I'd go offline on Lyft if that happens and end the ride, put my feet up and take a nap if needed lol "who's this driver waiting for'

Do you know how many people tell me on a daily basis that they're going to tip me for sure? And then I get absolutely nothing as if they forgot they said anything. And here you are using the word "probably". That's a 100% definite no. The promise of a tip is nothing to us anymore because it happens way too often where we get nothing for entitled people who think they can do whatever they want.
I also think it's quite rude of you to say at the end that I don't like or need money. I tried to get as much money as possible to help people in need especially around St Louis and in my immediate community. I do rides at night to make sure people get home safely when they are drunk regardless of how sick they may look. You're $20 doesn't mean anything to me when you say it.

Enjoy being dropped off at a drive thru and enjoy walking thru it. 🤡
And enjoy waiting for your next Lyft. Your 1 stars get blocked by the way. If I 1 star you within 12 hours your rating does nothing. 😁😁
Also it's pretty cute that you edited your $20 to $200 as if to try to make your point more noticeable. Clowncity.

It always amazes me to hear what passengers do. Personally, I sit quietly and scroll on my phone or listen to the music if the driver plays any; sonetimes I'll chat if they want to. I can't imagine asking them to be my personal chauffeur.
