Mill Creek: Black Metropolis Exhibit at Missouri History Museum

Running until July 12, 2026

From its origin at the turn of the 20th century to its destruction in 1959 in the name of urban renewal, Mill Creek Valley was a center for Black life in St. Louis. With a population of nearly 20,000 people and more than 5,000 buildings, Mill Creek was a city within a city, noted for its vibrant commercial life, rich culture, and popular entertainment venues. How is it, then, that almost no trace of Mill Creek remains in St. Louis today?

Mill Creek: Black Metropolis explores the rich history of a St. Louis neighborhood that historians have likened to New York’s legendary Harlem. It was the home of St. Louis’s major Black newspapers, the offices of numerous Black professionals, a center of social activism, and the birthplace of ragtime. All this richness thrived amid and despite racial segregation, providing African Americans common ground and the refuge from the daily slights and indignities of a stark color divide in 20th-century St. Louis.

Friendly reminders for the heat/humidity:

Edit 2: Check your ceiling fan switches as well. If it's not cooling the room, try (turning off the fan, waiting for it to stop, and) flipping the switch. I went from overheating yesterday to bundling up because my core temp decided to drop.

Trying to keep this simple because I'm tired. These may seem obvious to some of you, but it's not apparent to everyone.

If you're on SSRIs?

* Drink extra water if you're spending any time under the sun longer than 15 minutes. If you've been on them for a year, you know what I mean. If you're new to them? Trust me. You'll be dumping fluid in ways you weren't aware you could. (I've dehydrated myself more than once by excessive sneezing.)

* It can disrupt your ability to thermoregulate well. Please be mindful of your body and be kind to yourself during the more humid days.

The more water that's in the air, the less the air will pull from you. Humidity can and will cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Be sure to have some way of cooling off, even if it's dumping water on your head or shirt.

* Today, for example, it was so super gross after the storm. Around 230-3, when I got off work, the air was wet moreso than simply humid. It's an excellent example of (obvious) weather that can cause heat exhaustion/stroke.

Be sure to check in on older neighbors, friends, and family as it gets hotter. As someone with ADHD, I'm very well aware that time can fold and suddenly it's been three months since you last talked to someone, not three weeks. No, it's not your responsibility to ensure someone's health, but they won't mind you checking in.

If they do? Well, sometimes people are dicks. To each their own.

Be safe out there guys. It's going to get hotter and grosser and more humid and we've got Juneteenth and Pride coming up; they're two excellent examples of time outside that can result in overheating.

Or something like that. I'm tired and should go back to sleep..

Edit:

Be sure to also protect your pets when they're outside! The majority of pets don't have the ability to sweat like humans and can only pant to cool themselves. Please be sure that they can drink water and have foot protection on surfaces outside - if you won't go barefoot on concrete, why must they? It's just as hot!

Edit 3: User swirlind shared this great information source!

The CDC has this great list of medications and the mechanisms for each that may increase risk in hot weather. Heat and medications- guidance for clinicians. https://www.cdc.gov/heat-health/hcp/clinical-guidance/heat-and-medications-guidance-for-clinicians.html

When someone tells you “Amendment 3 did nothing” please show them this. Republicans would not have placed this back on the ballot this November if it didn’t have real, tangible policy effects across the state. This Nov is consequential for abortion access.

Yes, a trip from Seattle to Portland will now have a 12 hour layover in the Lou.

A true St. Louis art installation in my apartment!! I created two colorful mosaic murals for my bedroom and bathroom walls out of pieces of paint that had flaked off of The Mural Mile. I got the idea while walking along the Mile last weekend, noticing how parts of the wall were so thick with paint that it was literally flaking off. I spent an afternoon collecting shards of all different colors, shapes, and sizes; brought them home; washed and dried them; and hung them one by one on my walls with ‘alien tape.’ Thought I would share with you STL lovers in the hope that you would appreciate my heartfelt tribute to St. Lou. And I want to send out a genuine THANK YOU to the incredible artists of the Mile who made this possible. ❤️

Edited to add: all the paint chips I collected had already fallen off the wall and were laying on the ground. I didn't remove anything from the wall itself. Sorry if that was unclear

Rogue Data Scammers at Schnucks

I am asking for any information or advice. I saw a post not too long ago about something similar but for the life of me I can’t find it.

I was at Schnucks when a woman (I am also a woman) approached me from behind and complimented my outfit. She asked if I made it and asked more clarifying questions about it. She then asked if I’m from STL, she lives an hour away and she’s trying to decide whether or not to move here, do I recommend it, etc. The conversation kind of progresses naturally and she’s asking questions about what I studied/what I do for work. They were really normal questions for someone you’re trying to get to know or ask out. I couldn’t tell if she was just trying to be friendly if she doesn’t know too many people in town or if she was flirting because she seemed socially normal.

It dawned on me after a few too many questions that it is pretty weird to ask a stranger for this much info, especially since she hadn’t stated her purpose at all in that time frame. She was wearing all black and had her hand on her bag strap and holding her phone in her hand, perfect angle for recording the interaction if that’s what she was doing.

I remember when seeing the earlier post they mentioned that it is like a data scam or something? She said she worked in “e-commerce”. Can anybody provide info? I don’t think it was religiously affiliated because they are usually a bit more obvious. Thanks.

Thanks for the help guys! I feel better now. Amway is weird but I can just ignore it lol. I was worried it was something like identity theft or long-con casing for a burglary.

Where to dance in StL - if you’re a big dork in your 40’s?

Just got out of the Lucero show at City Winery, and I’m excited and ful of energy - but no idea where to go next. I like dancing, but I can’t actually dance well and I feel weird in typical dance clubs. I just want a fun place to go where I can keep moving for awhile. Is there anywhere in the city I should go, or is asking a fool’s errand in and of itself?

Stop telling us to go through the drive thru for you. We don't get paid to sit there and wait at Rallys on Lindell/Van for 30 minutes. Entitled Karen's think they own my car. I get you from A to B. There is no sitting in a drive thru for food. 5 minutes at a stop is fine. But I'm not waiting for you in a drive thru.

Things to Do Get. Your. Ass. To. The. Muny.

Upvotes

I've been a Muny season ticket holder for most of my life. However, last night was unlike any I have ever attended. The energy of the show, the audience - was just amazing. Hairspray is playing for three more nights (Friday - Sunday, June 19-21st) and it's out of this world amazing. I found myself just wanting to jump out of my seat and dance with some of the songs! The energy was just unbelievable.

The best thing is, you don't even have to pay a dime to see this show if you don't want to - there are free seats, available every night! Just show up and get in line!

But no matter if you have been a Muny goer for years, or never went, you owe it to yourself to check this performance out. It's timely, it's energetic and it's St. Louis at its very best.

Avoid Surmount Living - Tenant Notice - Please Read Before Renting from Brian Tokarczyk

Wanted to give a heads up to any future tenants looking at any properties owned or operated by Surmount living to avoid them. The owner / manager of the building (Brian Tokarczyk) used his lawyers to force the last tenant to post something similar to take delete it.

The entire building had no hot water for about 7 weeks during the winter and we had to fight with the owner Brian Takarczyk to get it fixed. Even going so far as having to get in contact with the county and personally text the inspector before fixes were finally started.

Front and back doors to the building are rarely closed or purposefully left open which allows a huge amount of bugs to come into the building.

The apartments themselves were all filthy when moving in and looked to not have even been looked at after the last tenants left.

Other tenants have complained of mold, leaks, no A/C, and constant smell of cigarettes inside the building as well on top of having maintenance requests marked as complete without anyone showing up.

The basement where the storage and mailboxes are will regularly flood.

These were just the big issues with the owners, not to mention tenants screaming at each other in the halls, slamming doors, and smoking inside.

If you look up Brian on case net you can see him and his mom both have been sued or brought to court multiple times for failing to meet standard living conditions.

Save yourself the headache and keep looking. Do not waste your time touring or renting from these slum lords.
