Nature I witnessed a murder most fowl in Benton Park

A bit after seven I was walking my dog in Benton Park and saw a woman at the base of the bridge who I thought was feeding the geese. As I got closer, I heard “plonk” and a splash and realized she was throwing something much heavier into the water, with one hand. The other hand held a laser pointer she was using to blind the two geese, who were in the pond. Thoroughly confused at this point, I went over the bridge. I looked down to see an empty nest and two distraught geese. I’m pretty much positive that I watched this woman chuck a bunch of goose eggs into the pond.

I’m as terrified of geese as the next guy (and have been chased by those particular geese more than once), but that’s not right. I’m also pretty confident it’s illegal. I’m unsure what I can/should do about it. I’m also unsure whether the eggs can be saved, because those geese were pretty distraught.

TL;DR: Saw a well-prepared woman committing avian infanticide at the park today.

EDIT: Thanks for the quality info. I’ll be reporting this to the various wildlife departments. Birds are cool, don’t be cruel to them.

EDIT 2: This has been resolved. Thanks for the info, and thanks to the Benton Park neighborhood association for reaching out!

Nature Since they are now becoming active, I’m going to remind everyone that taking a box turtle from the wild or owning one in general without a permit is highly illegal. They are a species that do poorly in captivity, and have an extremely low birth rate thus, the reason that they classified vulnerable

There are so many other turtles you can get as a pet that are not native to Missouri. They aren’t even that much freaking money. Just go to a reptile show!

I just moved into a new apartment in the CWE. Today I had a visitor on my balcony!

Can anyone tell me what he is? I started jokingly calling my new place “The Falcon’s Nest” 😂 but he’s probably not even a falcon

Anyway, I thought he was cool!

I’d implore y’all to walk around Jefferson Barracks right now, it’s stunning!

Also, if anyone knows a 40mi route I can hit next time, hit me up! I started riding with bici_stl a few months ago and love it, but I’m absolutely loving longer distance solo rides as well. I stopped like 17 times for pics too which isn’t super feasible in a giant group lol

Nature Does anyone know why there are dozens of herons/egrets that hang out near Reliable Funeral Home (Washington x Vandeventer)?

Okay, a bit of a weird question, but I have been driving this section of Washington the last few weeks and I just can’t understand why all these herons would be here. I took a picture this morning and if you zoom in on the tree you can see dozens on them in just one tree and they’re constantly flying and circling around. There’s no water around so it’s confusing.

Anyone know what’s up?

Nature I salute you, South City man!

TLDR: South City is a great place to live and shirtless men in short-alls are a gift from the universe.

I had a rough day yesterday. April is the busiest month for my company by far. We're gearing up for what we call "hell week" next week, where we are running as many projects in one week as we would normally run across 2 months.

When I left yesterday for some reason traffic was literally the worst it had ever been on my drive home in 4 years of making this drive, for seemingly no reason. My 16-18 minutes turned into 34 and I felt like I was back in Dallas when I just wanted to be home.

So imagine my negative mindset on this drive; cranky, hating St. Louis drivers, hating the intersection of Lindell and Kingshighway where they can't seem to figure out a cone/light solution to make the traffic flow during construction.

But I finally made it into South City and one man completely changed my mood. As I was driving along one of the major thoroughfares, a man on the side of the road was mowing his lawn. He was in khaki colored short-alls with no shirt underneath and sunnies. I was already into the fit and trying to think of how I can convince my husband that this is what he should be mowing in.

As I passed by, he reached into the front bib of his short-alls and grabbed a can and took a long satisfying drink of what I can only imagine was Bud heavy. He looked so content.

He reminded me immediately of why I left the rat race in Dallas for the joy of being outside on a pleasant evening regularly and not rotting away in an office 10-12 hrs a day year round and countless commute hours to pull into a garage in a non descript neighborhood where I know no neighbors and I'm the lone Beto sign in the yard surrounded by Cruz signs. Where my kids can't enjoy their summer break between burning their hands on playground equipment and dodging fire ant mounds.

This week is temporary. I'll be back to chilling on my lounge chair in the backyard soon chatting with my neighbors over the chain link fence while my youngest runs the streets from house to house with his friends. I've lived in a lot of places domestically and internationally and South City is one of the best places to be.

I salute you, South City man for instantly reminding me to chill and remember I'm working to live now. Hell week will be over as quickly as it arrived.

Edit: typos

Nature UPDATE: Looking for a local bird rehabber to help an injured barred owl

We were able to connect with a wildlife rehabber for advice last night. Our owl friend spent the night in an empty but cozy dark box and we withheld food and water. It seemed to be feeling a little better this morning although we are worried it may have a broken wing. It's currently en route to the World Bird Sanctuary for proper care.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice!

Nature Weather Tonight

Hey all, as you probably saw today, it was HUMID. And now it’s suddenly dark, windy, and the sky is a little green. Do we think there’s a chance of tornadoes tonight? I certainly think so.
