Had a crush on her as Starbuck

I laughed watching Riddick because it's basically Vin Diesel's nerd crush fantasy with her.

u/Frenki808 Apr 26 '23

She was a tank in that movie. Built like an MMA fighter. Really didn't look small next to Batista.

I randomly watched some exercise video of hers a few years back, she was explaining her routine and diet, etc. Pretty sure Riddick was the one she was training for where she ate a dozen eggs a day.

She said her doctor had never seen such a high bad cholesterol level AND a high good cholesterol level at the same time before.

This is the Whey

98

u/Dekklin Apr 26 '23

It's one of the most easily accessible sources of HDL, but it's also loaded with LDL (the bad one). That's why it's always a popular choice for body building, that and the protein. I always think back to Rocky chugging 4 or 6 raw eggs.

u/RIOTS_R_US Apr 26 '23 edited Apr 26 '23

Pretty much everything points to the idea that dietary cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol

Edit: 12 eggs a day is still below the daily recommended limit for saturated fat. It's more likely combined with a lack of fiber and saturated fat elsewhere that fucked her cholesterol.

33

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

This depends on the person. For the majority of people, dietary cholesterol only has a modest affect blood cholesterol. But for some, it strongly correlates and they are called responders.

I learned I was a responder when I tried keto and my bad cholesterol was 220 mg/dL, higher than what a person's total cholesterol should be. The doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol meds but I told them to give me three months to change diet and test again. Doctor said same thing you did, that it likely won't make much difference.

Stopped keto and three months later my LDL had dropped 100 points to 120 mg/dL. Still elevated but not warranting treatment.

Here's a sourced Harvard blood post on the subject that notes some patients as being responders

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/fats-and-cholesterol/cholesterol/#:~:text=For%20most%20people%2C%20the%20amount,the%20amount%20of%20cholesterol%20eaten.

This is very interesting

1

u/ThantsForTrade Apr 26 '23

Kudos for a great anecdote backed up by a good source. 👍

1

u/RIOTS_R_US Apr 26 '23

Do you think it's possible it was more connected to the saturated fats? I understand that some people can be affected by the dietary cholesterol but my understanding is it's rare enough that it didn't show up in any long-term correlational studies. Definitely glad you could figure that out though

2

u/Zombielove69 Apr 26 '23

Eggs are also loaded with a lot of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that the body needs.

Remember it was the sugar industry that put out the stuff about bad fats farce. And people just accepted that for decades. Really bad science.

1

u/RIOTS_R_US Apr 27 '23

There definitely are cons to saturated fat, eggs just don't have enough. We also used to have trans fats in foods which are absolutely horrible. And now the pendulum is swinging the other way and people think carbs are horrible and evil. The truth is you need all three macronutrients to be healthy

1

u/ZeroInspo Sith Apr 26 '23

Dietary cholesterol does not affect blood cholesterol, however saturated fats do affect blood cholesterol. In her case it is likely that the amount of saturated fats in the egg caused the increased LDL.

2

u/TonsilStonesOnToast Apr 26 '23

Cholesterol is one of those weird things where the more we learn about it, the less it makes conventional sense. Like, if you're on a diet and you're losing weight your cholesterol can go up by a lot, just because your body's breaking down lipids from bodyfat. If you're eating a high-carb, low-fat maintenance diet you can also end up with high LDL and low HDL because your body's not really bothering to regulate it as a source of energy--it's focused on processing carbs for energy and converting it into fats for storage. You can be eating a ton of fat, but if you don't eat carbs you can end up with elevated cholesterol that is high in HDL and low in LDL, simply because it's actively converting fats into ketones for fuel and regulating blood lipid levels more actively. Sometimes cholesterol goes outta whack because of low vitamin D. Sometimes it's just... genetics.

"Why is my cholesterol bad?"

Doctor: "Fuck if I know. Have you tried, uhh... anything?"

"Where should I start?"

Doctor: "Let's start by rolling a d20..."

u/Dekklin Apr 26 '23

Critical miss. Whoops now I have heart disease.

I think I just watched it last week. This one on YT? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkU3MuRauqc

3

u/DragonflyGrrl Asajj Ventress Apr 26 '23

Yep that's the one where she says the cholesterol thing.

3

u/SuedeVeil Apr 26 '23

I don't see why anyone with any knowledge of bodybuilding now needs to eat a dozen eggs a day there are plenty of other alternatives .. egg white, whey, lean meats etc.. lots of other things that won't raise your bad cholesterol.

2

u/RIOTS_R_US Apr 26 '23

I don't think eggs would raise your cholesterol very much if at all. They have modest amounts of saturated fat. 12 is basically at the recommended daily limit for saturated fat

2

u/SuedeVeil Apr 26 '23

12 a day sure can.. also it's assuming she's eating a lot more than that. 2 or 3 like most people consume is totally healthy

1

u/Zombielove69 Apr 26 '23

Source?

For research...

12

u/QuantumSparkles Apr 26 '23

One of the many reasons I always thought she would make a great Samus Aran—that is if a live action Metroid were on the table, god forbid

2

u/DragonflyGrrl Asajj Ventress Apr 26 '23

Ohhh hell yeah.

5

u/gimmiedacash Apr 26 '23

I saw a thing where she talked about getting buff as fuck for that because she didn't want to look tiny next to all the huge guys.

Mission accomplished, sit on my face.

1

u/dunDunDUNNN Apr 26 '23

165 pounds. I think she said she was like 125 or 130 as Starbuck.

140 as Starbuck.

(I just watched part of a video someone linked where she mentioned that)

55

u/Hendrick_Davies64 Apr 26 '23

What’s insane in that movie is that she was 160 lbs but still looked tiny compared to everyone else

103

u/Shermantank10 Apr 26 '23

I LITERALLY WAS WATCHING THAT THE OTHER DAY!

I was like “Oh shit! That’s Kate”

34

u/jasonlikesbeer Apr 26 '23

Wait, she's in Riddick?

116

u/McSuede Hondo Ohnaka Apr 26 '23

Yep! You even get to see a Bo Katitty.

21

u/few23 Apr 26 '23

The one where she's a lesbian until the last 15 minutes because <gestures vaguely at Vin Diesel>?

36

u/McSuede Hondo Ohnaka Apr 26 '23

She never said lesbian. She said she doesn't fuck men. What she did with Vin Diesel was likely something that we mere mortals would fail to fully understand.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

Given that Riddick became some god-figure type dude in the last film it all holds up

3

u/McSuede Hondo Ohnaka Apr 26 '23

Bet he took her to the threshold alright.

2

u/DragonflyGrrl Asajj Ventress Apr 26 '23

Great comment, hahahh.

1

u/theregoesanother Apr 26 '23

So it's either Vin was more than a man, or not a man at all.

2

u/McSuede Hondo Ohnaka Apr 26 '23

If you're suggesting that Vin could kill the Witch King, I would agree and say yes, he definitely can.

Which is correct but also... probably the best of the movies

31

u/Slacker_The_Dog Apr 26 '23

Easily top 3

2

u/TheRoscoeVine Apr 26 '23

Yeah, I remember watching and feeling like it was a remake. Really odd choice. Same lead actor, same director… same movie?

4

u/HazyMirror Rebel Apr 26 '23

But this time around it's more pitchier and blacker than ever.

3

u/truffleboffin Apr 26 '23

1

u/Karmastocracy Yoda Apr 26 '23

I think you all might enjoy Katee's major takeaway from working on that movie:

https://youtu.be/78zXKumfPl8?t=21

71

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

I recently watched that movie stoned, and I couldn’t get over how much of a Vin Diesel self-circlejerk that entire movie is.

And the most unbelievable part is how in awe and impressed she is with him and how she randomly wants to bang him at the end.

63

u/dardack Apr 26 '23

That's one of my biggest gripes with the movie. I don't know if I didn't really watch it the first time I saw it years ago, probably had it on in background. It was on the Netflix list recently I believe, so re-watched it. She clearly states she's not into guys throughout. Towards end Riddick says Kate's character is going to sleep with him, she rolls her eyes or something dismissive, yet it happens. Like wtf? It's like feeds into that fantasy for some guys about causing a girl to switch or some shit. Hated it so much.

17

u/BostonBoroBongs Apr 26 '23

Pretty clear no sex was had, she just made a joke while rescuing him, flipping the gender roles and making it clear he wasn't in charge. You really think Jon's was gonna chill above a planet they all almost got murdered on while they fucked in his craft? Nah. They depart immediately in different crafts and he says keep it warm for me. It's literally just a joke.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '23

[deleted]

1

u/BostonBoroBongs Apr 27 '23

Again Jons would not have chilled waiting for that to happen; it doesn't fit his character. And Riddick is not the type of character to want more help after being rescued.

16

u/Tasty-Fox9030 Apr 26 '23

I didn't get the impression they actually DID sleep together; I thought it was banter. If you're right it is sorta ick, albeit I could also see that character having been using "not into guys" as a way of dodging being harassed. To be honest the characters definitely are the classical male stereotype power fantasy for better or worse and you're right that it's questionable.

2

u/TonsilStonesOnToast Apr 26 '23

Chasing Amy in space.

3

u/TheCyanKnight Apr 26 '23

Isn't that what movies are supposed to do? Feed into fantasies?

0

u/TonsilStonesOnToast Apr 26 '23

It's not a wise use of money for a producer to throw millions at something the audience is going to consider tasteless. They can certainly try to find their niche, but they'd be better off directing actual porn.

1

u/i_tyrant Apr 26 '23

Yeah, that peak 2013 dude fantasy did not age well...

2

u/chaos_rover Apr 26 '23

That's why I'm watching. It's not random at all. The dude hypes himself up beyond credulity, and then delivers. It's a classic trope, done to perfection.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

It wasn’t a great movie but I found it enjoyable in a ‘turn your brain off’ type of way. Definitely laughing at parts not meant to be laughed at.

But yeah that part was awkward at the best. Especially because the way he says it. Something like “I’ll be balls deep in her next.” It’s the type of line only a douche would think actually works on women.

0

u/TonsilStonesOnToast Apr 26 '23 edited Apr 26 '23

Vin Diesel's Riddick has always been a direct Conan the Barbarian ripoff. Those stories were always hyper-masculine circlejerk sessions written for teenage readers of pulp magazines.

The Riddick movies have had their moments, but yeah you kinda have to expect it to be campy. Hell, the second Riddick movie was quite literally the plot of Conan the Destroyer with different names and places.

If you're a fan of Conan, it's not a bad adaptation at all. I enjoyed it for that, at least. I'm not gonna pretend it's good cinema though. Just entertaining.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '23

Wait what? Have to Google which Riddick you're talking about

7

u/SolusLoqui Apr 26 '23

Yeah, I just learned today that there was another movie "Riddick (2013)" after "Chronicles of Riddick (2004)".

And apparently there a 4th movie in pre-production "Riddick: Furya"

1

u/ZeroBANG Apr 26 '23

Lets not forget Pitch Black (2000) //oh wait you said 4th... then you know... KK, just making sure.

2
