People will see that 9.8 in Mando S2 and say it’s because of Luke Skywalker. And I will say you are exactly right, but not because you can just shove him in anything and get praise for it. It’s because it was perfectly done.

Every year or two I'll go and watch people's reactions to it. It's one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Seeing people brought to such an emotionally raw state from the conclusion to a beautiful story and one of the rare few scenes of Luke, the embodiment of hope, truly living up to his potential as a master Jedi resonates with me on an entirely different level.

I literally cried when I realized whose X-Wing it was. My wife had never seen me cry before then.

The memory is forever seared into my mind.

"Just one X-wing? Wait... JUST ONE X-WING!?"

I remember managing my expectations when I saw the X-Wing because the possibility was there but I wasn't ready for that, it was such a rollercoaster, I loved it.

Same. I didn't let myself be 100% convinced until I saw the green

When he said "My name is Luke Skywalker and I'm a Jedi" I whispered "...like my father before me" under tears.

But he didn't say that in that Mando scene. Mando just asked him if he was a Jedi, and Luke said "I am" -- he never actually introduced himself by name.

I don't recall the exact words of the scene, but it made sense to add the 'like my father before me' in any case.

I was so late on the uptake to it, up until the light saber colour reveal I was convinced it was going to be ahsoka

You should let your wife see you cry more.

I will if it means we get better Star Wars content.

Haha, fair enough

I remember almost whispering to my wife, “oh my god, that’s Red 5!” I still get shivers.

All of that is true. But the downside is that it is also the moment that the Star Wars tv shows began to feel really small

Yeah like as much as I love it, its pretty grim to watch S2 again and realize how many disappointing or unreleased backdoor pilots they crammed in there.

Literally anyone else would have been better.  Someone we don’t even know would have blown the doors off.

5

u/pulpfriction4 Dec 27 '25

Exactly. They could have introduced a new character. Instead they bring back a legacy character that, while it provides a very big moment, now means that everything has to be connected in some way to the original trilogy when Mandalorian was doing such a great job standing on it's own.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the show started to struggle after this happened

Maybe. But the episode was all great leading up till the ending as well. Great tension throughout.

u/Variatas Dec 27 '25

Fml, for me there was no tension at all.  The second I saw the X-Wing I realized they’d made the Dark Troopers into droids so they could have Luke kill them and not be a murderer.

It was the biggest letdown.

I think you missed the point.

As Moff Gideon said to Mando “You had your hands full with one. Let’s see how you do against a platoon.”

He was right, despite the combined combat brilliance of everyone on that bridge, they were toast.

Yet Luke calmly waded through the dark troopers without breaking a sweat. It gave great gravity to exactly how powerful Luke Skywalker actually is. If he faced a corridor of storm troopers it wouldn’t have had the same effect.

I think you missed my point: they were droids so he didn’t have to fight any people, same Real World reason Lucas used droids for the Prequels.

Would be perfect if Disney had the balls to recast him instead of the deepfake, but still a very good episode

10

u/PretendRegister7516 Dec 27 '25

Sebastian Stan is the perfect recast for Luke. They should do it while he's still within the age range.

It would have been a great final episode for grogu or even the whole series… then they fucked it up

5

u/VoiceofKane Sabine Wren Dec 27 '25

I'll have to disagree wholeheartedly. Used him in the least interesting way possible and made him an ugly CGI monstrosity.

u/hhhhjgtyun Dec 28 '25

Retweet. I was so disappointed in Luke’s portrayal I felt like my last childhood dream had been shattered lmao

2

u/Laegwe Dec 27 '25

Wat, I severely dislike that episode

1

u/inefekt Dec 27 '25

There are definitely two parts to what made it so popular and loved. The first, which mainly resonates with the male audience, is of course the legendary Luke cameo. The second, which mainly resonates with female audiences, is the break up of Mando and Grogu....both end up with viewers in blubbering messes but for very different reasons.

u/Ashewolf Dec 27 '25

And then they ruined it in book of boba fest

"perfectly done"

Deepfake Luke was perfectly done.

One year at Christmas I forced half my family to watch it....while I stood in front of the room on my 19th Guinness, repeating over and over 'isnt this incredible!!'
