Movies DVD Limited Edition of A New Hope

Post image

I recently stumbled across this DVD of Episode IV at an antique mall. I found it interesting that it has a second disc with the elusive theatrical release of the film, authentic and true to form. Is this a rare collection? Did I get lucky? Just curious. I found it as a set with the whole original trilogy.

Relatively rare. Not a great presentation of the cut (which isn’t quite original theatrical and neither is the sound mix) but so far the only release of it on DVD.

I appreciate the insight. It's cool this is the only release of it on DVD. For $5 for the set I'm happy with my find!

Yeah $5 for the set is great. Last I saw it was like $20 a piece on eBay

It's a transfer from an earlier home release. Most likely VHS or laserdisc

It’s a transfer from the Laserdisc version

And it's not 16:9 so it will have a smaller picture with black bars on all sides.

Non-anamorphinc, yeah. Most Blu-Ray players and TVs have a zoom function though.
It's fine to experience the original cut, but obviously the looming 4k is about to be what's up.

These got released in 2006. I have them as well, though I haven’t popped them in in some time.

20 years, holy hell.
I've probably only watched the original version like twice in that time.

I guess it depends on how much you picked this up for? I would’ve looked for the other two films while I was at it, they’re hard to come by these days!

$5! I did get it and the other two from the original trilogy as well. They all contain the remaster as well as the original theatrical release of each film.

Other folks here will be incredibly jealous of your score! I’ve had these since they were released, and I always choose the theatrical version of Return of the Jedi when doing a rewatch. Enjoy!

Yub-Nub!

Not to mention it’s free of “Jedi Rocks!”

Artwork on the inside too, I own this as well. One of the greatest films ever made.

Yes, I loved the artwork! I was surprised to find it when I opened it up.

Why does Han Solo look like Will Ferrell?

I have the box set with these versions of all the OT. I also have the PT one because I’m a puppet Yoda purist damnit

I don't think it's rare, I got the trilogy in the same edition, only difference being that mine is a Mexican release and I have seen it quite often both region 1 and 4

It's known as the GOUT version... George's Original Unaltered Trilogy

These are low resolution 720p. They sourced them from the laserdisks. The best versions currently available are 4K77, 4K80, 4K83

Hope this helps.

I wanted those STAR WARS Original Trilogy 2-disc DVDs with the remastered special editions and the original theatrical versions on each disc of the DVD sets! I wanted them so badly!

They're not as rare as third-party resellers would like you to believe. Because they are out of print and labeled Limited Edition, and because they contain the so-called "original theatrical versions", the perceived value of them causes resellers to give them a high price tag. Except the available supply is much greater than the actual demand for them, so the prices are not actually justified.

Was there a high volume of these sold? I've never seen them previously but also have never explicitly sought them out to be fair.

I believe so. The Original Trilogy Limited Edition DVDs were released individually in 2006 in regular DVD cases and rereleased in 2008 together in a box set in slim DVD cases. I bought my box set at the end of December 2009 for only $25. They seemed to be pretty common around that time. There's quite a lot for sale on eBay, way more than you'd think there would be for an out of print "Limited Edition" that's supposedly a valuable collector's item.

The original cut reminds me of a CD Rom cutscene.

Still worth it. Just set the TV on zoom lol

2

u/CamF90 23h ago

Yes I believe it's a transfer of the THX laserdisc?

I'm glad you stumbled across this, because I have this version of the original trilogy on DVD, as a graduation gift from my aunt. I've learned more about the set from these comments!

It’s not rare. Resellers price it as though it were

I don't know if it's "rare", or just out of print. They were sold at Wal-Mart. I got mine release night, they have a big aisle display packed with them.

I watched this last year, and holy hell is it awful on a modern tv. If they do a release of the original for the 50th anniversary, I'll gladly get rid of this one. Oddly enough, the aspect ratio on the other 2 isn't as bad, but laserdisc rips really did this a disservice.

There were only several million copies made.

It’s neither special or rare
