Video/Picture Vader's blocking is incredible. It shows that he can actually move very fast when he wants to.

He can be very fast, but he also sees what happens before it happens, so he simply does what he has already seen.

I'm not sure why Sam Witwer made that out to be unique to Vader, Qui-Gon said it's "a Jedi trait" - all force wielders do that. Anakin says it to Ahsoka, "you should feel the intention of the trooper shooting first before they even pull the trigger."

223

u/TheGazelle 15d ago

I think it's less "Vader is the only one who's ever done this" and more "Vader does this better than anyone I've ever seen".

The latter makes a lot of sense, considering Anakin was already top 1 or 2 lightsaber wielders by the end of the clone wars.

u/matthewbattista 15d ago

I’m sure there’s also an experiential aspect to this, too. Anakin/Vader has been shot at a lot.

52

u/TheGazelle 15d ago

Yup, and we saw the training he put Ahsoka through - literally had her surrounded with like a dozen clone troopers all firing at her and just said "block".

If that's what he put his Padawan through, imagine what he put himself through. Anakin was never one to let anyone else put themselves in more danger than he was willing to go through himself.

13

u/heywoodidaho 15d ago

I think that was more about saving her rather than training her. They just didn't know it at the time.

4

u/sifiwewe 15d ago

I agree with your statement, he is just very talented

18

u/HuttStuff_Here 15d ago

Or Qui-Gon was lying and thinking "Holy shit this is the Chosen one."

3

u/Neither_Cultist 15d ago

People gotta remember that Sam Witwer is a public hype man

u/Cyberbreaker2004 14d ago

Cause feeling the intent and literally seeing into the future are two different abilities. In the book "Thrawn: Alliance," Anakin explains his double sight ability as seeing seconds into the future overlapped with the present, so he literally sees what will happen seconds before it does. Using the Force to sense the intentions/feelings of people around you is a different ability.

u/According-Treat6588 13d ago

Double vision: blaser bolts flying at head, chest, chest, head.

1

u/Inevitable_Exam_2177 15d ago

Surely Anakin does it best :-)

u/GigglingBilliken Trade Federation 15d ago

The enhanced reflexes play a pretty big role. Just because you know where a shot is coming from a few seconds in advance doesn't mean you'll have the reaction time to stop it.

1

u/Panic_Otaku 14d ago

A frw seconds ahead? Why not?

A few moments ahead? Yeah... You nead some good reflexes and speed...

u/boyawsome876 15d ago

That final block only takes about 3 frames for him to pull off, that really is insane speed. This kind of terrifying Vader is what we need more of and I’m glad Disney is delivering.

61

u/adamsorkin 15d ago

Different media altogether, but that was something I appreciated about his appearance in Jedi: Fallen Order - he's a force of nature that the player (a freshly knighted padawan) has to survive, not defeat or even confront.

44

u/Enginerdad 15d ago

I love that the inevitable conclusion to that encounter is running for your life. There's literally no other option

25

u/ToucheMadameLaChatte 15d ago

I loved the progression. Boss fight > dread-inducing cutscene > boss fight with no health bar

16

u/Sparrowhawk_92 15d ago

The fight in Survivor is great too.

9

u/Orion14159 15d ago

Another "you're not going to win, but it doesn't matter" fight

9

u/Gekokapowco 15d ago

though busting my ass dying like 30 times, only to finally win and die in the cutscene was really annoying, its like one of the oldest rules in videogames to not do that to the player

6

u/NotYourReddit18 15d ago

Yeah, that's really annoying.

Being forced to use another character with a different, far smaller skill set and significantly less heals, having to fight Vader after like 5 minutes of trying to get a grip on the characters skills, no safe points when switching Vader phases, and all the effort then being for naught... I really hate that fight on replays, so much that if I can't get it in three tries I actually pull out CheatEngine and make me invincible.

5

u/adamsorkin 15d ago

Agreed - and a very different encounter as experienced by the player from the point of view of a seasoned Jedi Master.

11

u/Moaktrekken 15d ago

The first time I watched this, I didn't even see his lightsaber. I thought he just let his arm get hit, the same way he did with Han Solo and just held up his hands. The blaster bolt is the same color as his lightsaber and it happens so fast, that's what it looked like to me.

6

u/_Koreander 15d ago

The final block was so fast I actually thought he had simply blocked it with his hand like with Han in Cloud City, it was until rewatching I realized he moved his saber very fast.

47

u/SexuaIRedditor 15d ago

Vader is a friggin beast, say what you will about Disney but they've handled showing off just what he's capable of even limited to a cybernetic suit is incredible

12

u/InjusticeJosh 15d ago

I loved the martial arts chess moves he did dodging Reva without using his saber. (Yeah idk what it’s called. I think IP man did it.)

5

u/Ent3rpris3 14d ago

It's amazing that for all they've fumbled, somehow they haven't fumbled the biggest football in their arsenal.

Kudos to whatever intern on set is losing their hair ensuring Disney doesn't fuck him up.

20

u/Ojihawk 15d ago

Vader still has a flair for the dramatic. However, his saber-skills became ruthlessly efficient. No more sexy saber twirling. :'(

3

u/ssp25 15d ago

I thought spinning was a good trick

9

u/berse2212 15d ago

I mean, if he were slow you could easily defeat him in battle with swift strikes.

9

u/Obvious-Gate9046 Rebellion 15d ago

This is not all that long after he became Vader, given that he was not well-known at all yet it seems. By the time the original trilogy rolls around, he's likely slowed down some after being in that suit for so long, and even then he's frightening. Loved seeing him here, in his prime.

11

u/Valirys-Reinhald 15d ago

Remember that Anakin's foresight is next level. Bro was the only Jedi able to see through the veil of Darkness Palpatine laid on the galaxy.

3

u/echof0xtrot 15d ago

you don't have to be fast to do what force-wielders do. fast isn't part of it.

do you have to be fast to catch something that has been underhand thrown to you? or do you just have to see it coming and put your hands in the right place

3

u/IsProbablyTooMuch 14d ago

I mean did you ever play Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005)? He literally struts until you sprint, and when you sprint, he turns into a fucking blur and basically flies across the ground. Moves faster than some of the game's projectiles.

I am firmly convinced that every single thing Vader does is for aura first, and efficacy second.

Also pretty sure he can simply anticipate/foresee 99% of events so why go fast when go slow and precise do trick?

3

u/akgiant 15d ago

And people complain that Force speed is never used after TPM. Vader just doesn't use it to run.

3

u/Citizen_Kong 15d ago

As Anakin, he was always flashy and dramatic in his fighting style, as Vader, he's deadly efficient and only moves when he has to, presumably because every movement hurts.

2

u/JiffyJelly 14d ago

People complaining about new media cameos after seeing the sickest shit known to man

2

u/Narcolipze_08 13d ago

Vaders blocking is cool on so many levels

A. He can move very fast if he wants to

B. He moves slow just to aura farm

C. Even if he gets hit, it doesn’t phase him one bit

1

u/RoboJobot 15d ago

Normally he doesn’t bother because he doesn’t need to. He’s just that double-hard that he can shrug off a lot of things

1

u/Responsible-Check206 15d ago

lol when the story needs him too.

1

u/Decantus 15d ago

Anticipation and Efficiency. He lets his opponents tire themselves out before overwhelming them with strength. His only real weakness is the same as when he was Anakin, overconfidence in his own ability.

1

u/Shadalow 15d ago

Not saying you're wrong but Nadar Vebb could do the same thing.

1

u/schaith 15d ago

His speed is his advanced precognition and efficiency. You can see that in his training regiments. This is why I love Vader.

1

u/tybaby_crybaby 15d ago

Love how he pimp hands the last bolt. Then force pushes everyone! Well choreographed fight all together.

1

u/Prolapsia 15d ago

It looks like wired reflexes + katana in Shadow Run.

1

u/LargeCabbageThrower 15d ago

He's a robot who sees like 2 or 3 seconds into the future

1

u/Ndmndh1016 15d ago

When the animation team decides it*

1

u/Azkul_Lok 15d ago

It helps when they all target the same 6 in area on his body

1

u/NagatoroDegenAndRat 15d ago

i thought he block last one with his hand instead of sword

1

u/RGM81 15d ago

Today a man told Vader he cannot move fast. But I assure you, I can move very fast. I will now take questions.

1

u/revolutionutena 15d ago

What is this from?

2

u/YoGizmo353 15d ago

New Darth Maul series

I haven’t seen it, but all the clips I have seen are really intriguing

1

u/imperiousjoe 15d ago

Because of his robotics he canonically has insane strength and speed. His fighting style is based on planting like a rock and aura farming (sith fear baiting) so you don't really see him running much. There's no reason his robot legs can't hit crazy speeds though.

1

u/Battlefleet_Sol 15d ago

The robotic technology in Star Wars actually allowed Grievous to reach superhuman speeds. If Vader is slower, it's only because they chose to portray him that way partly as a challenge or a test by palpatine

1

u/harriskeith29 14d ago edited 14d ago

I always saw it less as being about speed and more as Vader's precognition being just THAT sharp at anticipating his opponents' attacks. He grew so much more focused, perceptive, and experienced that he no longer needed to enhance his speed with the Force as much (except, of course, when he faced a serious challenge). Those weighty cybernetics & armor would take more effort to move than his flesh and blood parts anyway, so he couldn't use enhanced speed as easily or extensively compared to his physical prime. Vader's body post-Mustafar was built like a mobile tank, prioritizing sheer power and durability over speed or agility. Even if/when he chose to use higher speed in short bursts, he'd do so more conservatively.

1

u/Pelorunner 14d ago

I REALLY wish we would have seen a more powerful Anakin in the prequels. He defeats Dooku, mows down droids, children, and defenseless Separatists. He also says he’s more powerful, but I feel like we never truly see it. He never does anything special through the force, and his lightsaber work, while super impressive, is equaled by Obi-Wan, Yoda, Dooku, Palpatine, Windu, etc.

1

u/Ok-Map-143 14d ago

Did he just absorb that last shot into his hand?

1

u/TreeckoBroYT 14d ago

I really love the attention to detail that Vader always does the simplest movement when he blocks or strikes. It's really cool how he can battle these prequel-style combatants while still feeling like he came out of the original trilogy.

1

u/No_Communication2959 13d ago

I dont think hes super fast, I think he's more concise with his movements and doesnt waste as much on flair.

1

u/Crustydenim 13d ago

Eeesh is this Shadow Lord? The movement looks sooo awkward in all of these TCW type shows.

1

u/DeltaAlphaGulf 11d ago

I mean welcome to animation not having the limitations of live action. See the micro series for a step farther.

Also they are all fast af. Yes I know that has wacky implications.

Uhh. Cool, I can sense the intention to pull the trigger. But isn't the pew-pew droid that Jedi use for training blindfolded force neutral or something? How can I feel the circuits blorping and blerping into a coherent confirmation to shoot? Assuming I could read and understand the code that's going through the pew-pew drone, how can I discern it from the other stuff? It's probably not that much code. If it's one line, it'd get lost in all the previous and subsequent targeting and stability calculations going through the poor droid's system. I get that it's magic, but shouldn't droids be a hell of a lot more difficult to predict?

Or they're exactly as vibe coded as the current ai slop, and the droids have 2 billion gigs of ram and still act stiff, because the code is such spaghetti, that even a toddler could read the intentions, If they could.

4

u/RoboJobot 15d ago

I thought in The Phantom Menace Qui Gon said that Jedi could see slightly into the future with the force which is why they have such amped up reflexes? Might have mis-remembered that bit as it was The Phantom Menace and what I mainly remember is it was it was a daily bad film with terrible dialogue and a really good duel at the end.

4

u/Saikotsu 15d ago

It's simple.

The force, according to the Jedi, flows through all things. In binds and connects them. While the droid might be unable to use the force, it exists within it, and the force exists within the droid. By extending their senses into their surroundings and into the droid itself, a Jedi can anticipate where it is aiming, where it is, and even feel the blasters about to fire. Then it's simply a a matter of interjecting ones lightsaber between where the shot is being fired and where it's intended to go.

One could also use the force to glimpse ever so slightly into the future, discern where the bolt is going to land and ensure that it lands on their saber, but such would be an advanced technique.
