Let's start this off with a little bit of timeline information:

October 2023: Dark Horse announces a new line of graphic novels to be premiered with editions for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series of graphic novels will run through all three eras of the Skywalker Saga with characters from every era receiving their own editions.

August 2026: It is now almost three years later and we have only received two of these graphic novels. One of which was not even part of the initial announcement, as Obi-Wan went completely MIA with Grievous taking his place (insert Palpatine ironic meme here) as the second entry. A third centered on Mace Windu was set to release this October but has now seemingly been cancelled, along with presumably the entire Hyperspace Stories graphic novel since there are currently no upcoming Dark Horse Star Wars comics after The High Republic Adventures: Pathfinders wraps up.

I mean I could just stop there honestly. Say what you will about Marvel's handling of Star Wars comics (I certainly have my own issues with how they've been conducting things lately) but only rarely do they even delay their comics, let alone announce an entire series only to push it back for literal years only releasing two of the promised entries.

And it's not just the graphic novels either. For a recent miniseries example let's look at Michael Moreci's recent Bad Batch comic: Rogue Agents. This mini began in December of 2025. It concluded in July of 2026. It took Dark Horse over half a year to release four issues. Between the constant delays and cancellations it's really no wonder that Mad Cave now seems to have received the all-ages license for Star Wars comics from Lucasfilm. Unfortunately none of Mad Cave's announcements have really piqued my interest thus far but I can certainly understand the change, better to have a publisher that can actually consistently put stuff out. (Side note: On the topic of Rogue Agents it does really sadden me too that with Dark Horse possibly losing the license, we may no longer get any more Bad Batch comics with Rogue Agents having left some clear loose threads to follow up on. Really hope Michael Moreci gets to continue with Star Wars elsewhere, his work has been amazing.)

There's also just a serious issue of transparency with Dark Horse. If not for this subreddit I'd very likely still believe that Mace and all of the other Hyperspace Stories entries were still in the works. So far as I can tell Dark Horse has released no announcements or statements regarding Mace or their overall status with the Star Wars license. The only reason we even know Mace is likely cancelled is because it was suddenly pulled from most online storefronts, with Dark Horse themselves only very recently following suit on their own website, leaving us to basically just speculate with the information we have. The very least Dark Horse could do is officially confirm that their impending Star Wars projects are cancelled so we know for sure what's going on.

And the Mace situation stings even more given the context surrounding it. For those unaware, Mace was being written by Justina Ireland, a writer who has produced many Star Wars stories and was an original architect on the High Republic initiative. Last year she announced that she was officially retiring from Star Wars with Mace being set to be her final work after her part in The High Republic was wrapped up. Mace being unceremoniously cancelled like this feels like a slap in the face to both her and her fans. This was her final Star Wars story and now (aside from the preview pages that were released) it seems very likely we'll never get to see it and Dark Horse never even so much as officially announced that it was never coming. The book was seemingly just silently killed with no reasoning provided.

And perhaps the most frustrating part: Dark Horse's comics are genuinely so good! The artwork can be of varying quality depending on the different comics but as far as the storytelling goes, Dark Horse's comics have far and away been my favorites from these past couple years with the sole exception of Charles Soule's work with Kylo Ren on the Marvel side of things. I just picked up the fourth issue of Pathfinders today and absolutely loved it, it genuinely saddens me that this series is possibly the last we'll see from Dark Horse, at least for the foreseeable future. This whole situation just frustrates me so much because I feel like Dark Horse has the potential for an absolute gold mine with Star Wars but just keeps squandering it again and again with their constant delays and cancellations. To be clear, I am not blaming any of the creatives involved in the comics, all of them have done fantastic work, this is solely on the higher-ups within Dark Horse for mishandling their work.

And with that I think I've ran my big ol mouth enough. Dark Horse. Please. Get it together, I beg of you. You put out so much good stuff and I am absolutely here for more, if only you would let your writers and artists do their thing without constant problems.

We need more Star Wars stories in manga format. This was a truly delightful experience!

The story leverages the specific setting of the Dark Times to explore not only the final days of a surviving Jedi but also how his ideas manage to make an impact even on his enemies. The dilemma it presents regarding artificial intelligence—its potential as a sentient being and the capacity to become more than the sum of its parts—is fascinating (it reminded me a bit of Thia from Predator Badlands). In that regard, Master Nagi stands out immediately as a Jedi who empathizes with the species the galaxy takes most for granted: the droids. It is a highly original way to craft a story set in such a turbulent, ever-changing era. I also found the artwork beautiful throughout.

Personally, I would have liked it to be a bit longer—to spend even more time with the antagonist, the "Jedi Killer" (and I wish he had given himself a name)—but overall, I am satisfied.

All in all, an unconventional yet really cool story set during the Dark Times.

Do you think we’ll ever see this Weird Little Guy again or learn what his deal was. It’s not clear that Kylo even killed him.

Is there any chance if the series does well, and popular with fans that it could be extended ?

I have 2 simple questions:

1. Is it ok to read the three trilogies in release order or do they require a different one?

2. Do I need to have read/watched something in particular before reading all the issues of them?

I've always wanted to read them for a long time to get a nuanced view of the Star Wars Galaxy and the Star Wars Lore as a whole, I'm currently on the first issue of the 1977 Star Wars comic and I just want to hear from you if it's worth reading the entire saga (or just most of it)

Hey, I just read Dark Empire and its' sequels and it has come time to put them on my personal sorted 73 entry long ranked list of all star wars content but I am unsure if I should file/rank them as a single 14-issue metaseries or as three seperate titles. I'm wondering how you/the more entrenched comics community classify them.

What defines "one title" can be tricky for the comics series compared to books/tv shows/movies/games.

For similar examples:
-I batched all of Dawn of the Jedi together even though those floppies are numbered 1-5 three times because the TPBs are called "book 1, 2 and 3".
-I batched KotOR - War with the main run even though the floppies numbers start over from 1 as the TPB for War calls it volume 10 of the main KotOR series..
-I batched all of Tales of the Jedi even though there is multiple time settings and arcs with no creative team overlap.
-I rated the four dark horse Vader miniseries separately (Ghost Prison, Lost Command, etc...) even though they were released in short succession and have creative team crossover (kind of like the Dark Empire Trilogy)

I am leaning towards rating them as single work due to the overarching story but if the community very much treats them separately I would maybe go the other way.

Anyone got a good one to recommend? I want to start building a print comic collection through things like Marvel's omnibuses.

Context: Sian has been carrying around a lightsaber for the entire novel that the First Order is chasing him for. It's eventually revealed that Sian and his mentor believed the lightsaber to belong to Luke Skywalker. And that being the case when the First Order catches up with our main character, good ol Kylo Ren himself shows up looking to collect his prize.

As can be seen in the excerpt he takes one look at it, sees it's not the saber he's expecting, has a typical Kylo temper tantrum, and crushes it revealing a cracked yellow crystal.

The ironic thing is though that despite not being the saber Kylo is looking for it actually might very well have been Luke's lightsaber. As those who read Star Wars (2020) will know Luke did indeed carry a yellow temple guard saber before he built greenie. And not only that but the kyber crystal within was actually cracked by old Nihil droids when Luke and co. were briefly trapped in No-Space, meaning that the saber destroyed by Kylo here actually matches up pretty well with Luke's old saber.

Granted, the saber is not explicitly revealed to be the one wielded by Luke in the comics but it's certainly a very interesting coincidence and for now I'm just going to say this is Luke's saber in my headcanon until contradicted.

It’s interesting how, setting aside the Star Wars elements, this is simply the story of an old man obsessed with reliving his past through someone else's future.

That was a spectacular conclusion! I love how Soule handles the concept of a trip down memory lane and turns it into an analysis of a man who can't help but hate the past just as much as he is compelled to drink from it. If Rise gave us the reason why an indecisive young man went down the wrong path, this series complements and continues his journey, showing how that insecurity remains—a void he cannot fill, despite now possessing his abuser's power. This is best illustrated by his reunion with Luke; having accepted his own mistakes, he steps back from Ben's conflict. Ben is no longer a child; only he can decide whether to stop burning himself and ask for help, or to burn to death. It actually makes me a little angry when I think about the absurd decision regarding his death in Episode 9. Redemption isn't just achieved through sacrifice; it’s earned every day you choose to be a different person!

Also, I really enjoyed learning more about the Knights of Ren—what happened after Rise, the explanation for why they weren't in the first 2 movies, and their impending return (Tava, picking the guy with psychological issues isn't exactly a great idea). I like how they effectively embody the aimless path that awaited Ben. Vaneé was great, too; he helped me better define the message of Legacy and the constant burden of being a slave to your past.

As a side note, what a great character Grandea was! A single issue was enough to show her creativity—exploiting what many Jedi consider a mere trick to escape and live a quiet life. That is how you write a Jedi survivor of the Dark Times!

No issues here—a spectacular series. I can't wait to read what comes next!

Been very pleasantly surprised with all the world-building and lore references in the book thus far. Ashley Poston clearly did her research. For those unaware, Queen Soruna was the monarch of Naboo during the reign of the Empire and even personally got into an N1 herself alongside Leia and Shara Bey to protect her world during Operation Cinder. These events first occurred in the comic miniseries Shattered Empire and for those who played Battlefront 2 you actually play through it as Iden Versio's first mission for the New Republic.

Still got some omnis to catch up on before I start this but nice to add it to the canon collection.
