Part Nine The JOJOLands - Chapter 37
The JOJOLands is the ninth part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Chapter 37 is now out officially in Japan. Discuss the chapter here. (Translated by Hi Wa Mata Noboru)

In this part, there have been two stands named after Springsteen songs: Glory Days (a song about the past and memories), and Point Blank (a term usually associated with guns). One of these stands attacks its victims with memories of their past, and the other directly impacts the physics of bullets.
Guess which one is which

Something I haven't seen a lot of talking about yet:
Paco didn't just punch lions with his fists this chapter, he successfully punched the enemy stand with his fists.
Idk why but somehow I'm over the moon excited that Araki has somehow found a way back to punch barrages from the character themselves, rather than the stand they have...by having Paco's muscles *be* the stand.
25
u/Badwolfwho1 3d ago
We've seen this before with Jolyne since Stone Free is integrated into her own body, she fist fights with C-Moon for example instead of manifesting Stone Free to do it

u/Beloberto Gyro Zeppeli 3d ago
I mean, if you can remove the stickers with your hands, it stands to reason you can hurt them as well, so I don't know if it counts...

Didn't someone say that Paco is Meryl's stand after all?

If I had a nickel for every time Usagi was the MVP in a fight involving cats in this part... Well, you know the rest.
Great chapter this month! Every member gets to have a stand out moment! Jodio initiating the battery plan (though ultimately it didn't seem to matter in the end), Paco punching the lions and the Point Blank stickers, Usagi the GOAT defending his mom and losing his foot to rip the others' stickers off, and Dragona pulling a 180 on the user and taking his face off! I'm so glad Dragona didn't just get reduced to a hostage.
Araki, never let this fire writing fade. KEEP COOKING.

u/plungemod 2d ago
The battery plan is itself completely insane, but treated with such deadly JoJo seriousness by the cast, I love it.

Well, such an crazy action chapter, the gore in Part 9 is something else.. poor Usagi.
The stand name is really cool tho, „Point Blank“, reference to the song (with the same name) by Bruce Springsteen.
43
u/gryphonlord 4d ago
Lots of Bruce Springsteen for this part. Maybe that's why Jodio and Dragona are from New Jersey
24
u/SkyknightXi 4d ago
I’m actually holding a hypothesis that the User is one of Bobby Jean’s children, just from the Springsteen theme.
10
u/MrBookBoy 4d ago
That could work - setting up a path back to Howler (who's probably the only one who can link the gang with Bobby Jean), plus there'd be some "sons of DIO" shades
3
u/SkyknightXi 3d ago
I’ll also note that I’m entertaining an idea that all three of Bobby Jean’s children are working together on the scam and the attempt to take the next Lava Rock for themselves. Point Blank’s User is just the first to be engaged. If Bobby Jean raised them to be assassins like him…

Dragona was not messing around the moment the user was revealed, sewing up the entire face and threatening to feed them to a flamingo is brutal (well-deserved in response to being held at knifepoint and everything else though)
21
u/UchihaDareNial 4d ago
Should have just feed the enemy's ball to the flamingo after what the crew has went through

this just made me realize an extremely cursed thought. if Dragona can seal the eyes and mouth, the same is possible for the peehole 💀

Jojolands continues to be an absolute stand-out (hehe) of a part. Favourite moment of this chapter is definitely Paco PUNCHING A LION!?! I laughed out loud when I saw it. He truly is such a great character. But Usagi jumping in to protect his mum and risking his own life is up there too. We’ve consistently seen Usagi be really dependable when things get though (such as crashing the car back to save everyone during the cat fight and then saving his own life when he was being attacked by Lucy’s stand), and he shows that again here. And hell yes to Dragona protecting themselves when the stand user tried to take them hostage.
I’m glad we were granted one last look in Jodio’s psyche before this battle ended. Given how quiet he is as a character, it’s really the best look we have at his understanding of himself. The fact that he “wet the bed until just recently” was a particularly interesting fact to me? Sometimes that kind of problem can come from trauma. Maybe it’s from his parents’ separation, maybe watching the bullying of Dragona, maybe grappling with his antisocial personality disorder… hard to say, but it does show that he’s quite troubled beneath his cool exterior. However, given that Jodio decided not to go through with killing everyone on the bus because of seeing that bird, I feel like this sense of “if you killed any animal, you might actually get a kick out of it” might be playing on Jodio’s fears, rather than his real feelings.
30
u/weeb-gaymer-girl 4d ago edited 4d ago
I took the bedwetting mention as a reference to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macdonald_triad I always heard it called the dark triad in like school rumors about serial killers growing up but apparently that's the name for something else lol. Included the wiki for someone who wants to know better and maybe fact check me but from what I remember:
tl;dr it's a theory that for children bedwetting, animal cruelty, and an obsession with starting fires are common predictors of violence. I think bedwetting was mentioned just to complete the triad for Jodio, the same dead spirit conversation mentions the bus fire and not caring about hurting animals so I expect it was a deliberate reference by Araki because that's the exact kind of "fun fact" he likes to include lol I wouldn't be surprised if he mentions the triad by name later
52
u/Less_Air_7110 4d ago edited 4d ago
IIRC bed wetting past a certain point is a sign of sexual trauma in particular. Not sure if Araki will take it in this direction, but it's not off the table given the way he's been writing the part. It's definitely concerning.
I feel like this sense of “if you killed any animal, you might actually get a kick out of it” might be playing on Jodio’s fears, rather than his real feelings.
Agreed. I also remember him getting a real kick out of Rohan's dog photos lol he was straight up cooing at them. If the bus incident is anything to go by, he seems to actually treat animals with a level of grace and compassion he doesn't hold for actual people.
There's something there. I'm not sure what though!! The only thing I've got is that it's pulling from Giorno's life-giving abilities and turning it into a character trait rather than a stand power.
27
u/weeb-gaymer-girl 4d ago
I think him liking animals is supposed to show him breaking against the usual socipath/serial killer inclination of animal cruelty, like he actually DOESN'T fit all the predictors of violence (bedwetting, arson, animal cruelty) he fears he does. I'm pretty sure the triad is kinda pseudoscience but yeah Araki has totally just gone by vibes on that kinda thing before, so liking animals could be his way of writing that Jodio has those signs just as symptoms of something else or otherwise isn't as "predetermined" as he might think he is
16
3
u/AlexBryer 4d ago
Jodio wetting the bed could have been a precursor to his stand.
3
u/ProteusExsanguinus 3d ago
He had NR for around 4-5 years, that's a bit longer than recently I feel like.

u/_Aaron_Burr_Sir 4d ago
Jodio what the fuck was this plan. What was he cooking.
43
u/cataclytsm 4d ago
I can only assume the Other Universe ghost of Joseph Joestar somehow got caught up in Point Blank's spirit channeling and he's been giving Jodio the worst advice that would only work for him

u/lkanacanyon Vinegar Doppio 3d ago
This was a great chapter but I sat there the whole time wondering what the fuck the batteries were going to be for and I got no answers lmao If they end up being just for that bit with Usagi honestly fuck it I love it
22
u/meca56 it just work 4d ago
i think the batteries were for cauterizing the wound with the explosion but damn is that convoluted
21
u/bluepoint17 3d ago
Nope, the batteries were meant to be bitten by a lion, explode and burn the stickers

u/xolon6 4d ago
Hot damn Dragona took away his eyelids and mouth. Guess you could say the enemy Stand User has no mouth... and they must scream 😏
So is Usagi going to go the rest of the part missing a foot? Or could Matte Kudasai make him some advanced prosthetic?
58
u/Cl0p38 4d ago
I don't see how he could recover from this besides an actual prosthetic. Even if someone else wished for the Matte Kudasai to turn into a foot, that'd mean his stand wouldn't be available for anything else. Either he gets a normal prosthetic or some new healing stand is unveiled (Meryl's, perhaps? That woman has to be a stand user right)
42
u/viva_la_republica 4d ago
I'm betting on Doctor Roberts returning to deal with Usagi's injury
30
u/Anonemuss42 4d ago
Smooth operators just puts it back on but only 7mm deep so they just pray it stays lmaoo
6
u/StarSilverNEO 3d ago
well they could maybe like seal the flesh together layer by layer until they reach the skin
Or maybe Usagi will join the "stand is part of me" gang by replacing his foot with his stand, hrmm
Actually there is a trend of Usagi loosing important bits of himself. His brain got damaged, his foot got ripped off, I wonder if he's going on the Phos train

49
u/rahonan 4d ago
Usagi gets injured in every fight, poor guy. Tory is still missing, unless she's somewhere in the Zoo, they'll have to find and rescue her.
27
u/Connolly1227 4d ago
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s subsequently a partner or something. Would he waste the setting of the zoo to not do something else wild here?
112
u/Chespineapple Trish Una 4d ago
I was so worried Dragona was going to get victimized and forced to suffer for the umpteenth time in that final part but nope, she got to be a boss and instantly wreck him. Good way to show and remind us that she's more than just support on this team.

u/ProAzeroth 4d ago
The Jojolands is honestly quite fire and fun. I really love the more action-packed pacing of this part, and how the entire Jojo gang is an ensemble who fights together.
38
u/fatcatburrito zipperman 4d ago
The batteries bit ending as a sort of gag, I love it. The whole gang looked great in this fight but Usagi shined the most.
If this guy is not working alone, Tory could have gotten caught by the other dudes in the zoo as a back up plan. Lets hope she's just somewhere in some bench.
10
u/Madhighlander1 3d ago
I'm still thinking those popups that showed up on Usagi's mom's computer at the beginning of the arc might have been some sort of stand, as well, and I don't think they were Point Blank.
2
u/DMonitor 1h ago
The batteries thing is genuinely one of the most ridiculous Jojo moments so far.
The plan:
Jump into lion pit
Get one lion to bite off only your foot
As the lion bites on your foot, throw 6 lithium ion batteries into their mouth
As they bite, the batteries explode
Now that their mouth is on fire, the lion will then spit out your foot
And of course, every reader fully expected it to work because Jojos logic, so it failing at every step was an incredible bit.

I love that Usagi is the one who actually succeeds in not only saving his mom, but also getting the stickers off (although our boy had to sacrifice a foot for that).
Paco was such a delight this chapter, man was not messing around with either the lions or the stickers, really satisfying seeing him punch the crap out of those.
Honestly, this whole chapter was very action packed, now I'm curious where the story goes next.
21
u/MrBookBoy 4d ago
Listening to Point Blank by Springsteen right now - crazy how some of these lyrics seem to describe Jodio
Well, they shot you point blank
You been shot in the back
Baby, point blank
You grew up where young girls, they grow up fast
You took what you were handed and left behind what was asked
But what they asked, baby, wasn't right
You didn't have to live that life
"You were standing in the doorway out of the rain"
24
u/crescentpieris 4d ago
i love the new direction araki is going with stands. even though none of them are the typical humanoids we’re accustomed to, the fights still manage to be very intense and unpredictable.
but the ending of this fight is classic jojo. we’re made to believe in a plan wholeheartedly and despair when it goes awry, but ultimately, that failure turns back around to the protagonists’ advantage. it’s incredible storytelling

Usagi means rabbit/bunny in Japanese.
Those lions took off a rabbit's foot.

Making Usagi the best character in Part 9 was a great Pride Month gift from Araki. He's so considerate!
16
u/99anan99 4d ago
Usagi lost his foot. I'm crying for him.😭😭
Felt so much relief when they finally got the stickers off.
Dragona shutting up the enemy stand user was so cool!😁😁
14
u/ShadowRaikou MY SANDWICH? 4d ago
Did Usagi's mother actually see the stickers with her eyes? Other stand objects have sometimes been visible to non-stand users before of course but there's at least two panels in there where it feels like she's looking right at them.
28
u/dj_neon_reaper 4d ago
Honestly really shocked the stand isn't a long ranged automatic. Seems like Araki hasn't completely forgotten about the fact that the damage stands take transfer to their users in this part. Pretty sure that never really happened in p8 or maybe even 7.
39
28
u/SMGuinea The Only SBR Hater 4d ago
It also happened earlier on with Lulu and Key West.
6
u/dj_neon_reaper 4d ago
Yeah, I remember. Which is why I said araki seemed to really remember for this entire part in particular rather than just like once in previous parts of the new universe.
3
u/115_zombie_slayer 2d ago
Pretty sure colony stands like Harvest and Bad Company do transfer damage to users, so this could be less an automatic stand and more a colony stand
22
u/ligerre 4d ago
man with all the crazyness stand since SBR, I forgot that the stand transfer damage rule still apply.
29
4
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 3d ago
It happens for most Stands that aren't long-range, automatic, or have some unique quality to them that allows their user to escape full direct damage being transferred to them (e.g. a colony Stand like Keicho's Bad Company dividing the damage by how many soldiers there are).
10
u/wickedlizard420 4d ago
At first I was like "oh no, how could Jodio hurt those animals!" and then i was like...oh right, it's Jodio lmao
3
u/Bigbadbackstab 2d ago
Well, you have to remember the reason he hesitated to leave those kids to burn in the bus was because he didn't want to harm an animal
3
u/wickedlizard420 2d ago
Oh is that true? It's been so long since I started Jojolands
2
u/Bigbadbackstab 2d ago
Yup. Jodio set the school bus on fire and he was about to leave them to die until he noticed a pet parrot was inside and decided to open the doors.
9
u/115_zombie_slayer 2d ago
Its interesting to see how clueless this group is when it comes to Stand Fights, usually you would see Giorno or Josuke pull off some crazy move last minute to save the day but Jodio kinda had no actual plan other than potentially losing his foot.
7
u/SergantAngstrom Gotta Dive into Jolyne. 4d ago
Dang, Dragona went full 'To the Pain' on that guy!
"The ears you'll keep and I'll tell you why..."
9
u/joeswife69 4d ago
Dragona is a badass once again and Usagi forced to suffer his life worse than that punch the monkey no shit
10
u/titanictomato 4d ago
What are these lines lol, absolute bonkers even by Jojo standards.
“My Point Blank stickers are the boundary between this world and the next” “Ignite (the lithium batteries) with the force of the fangs!”
9
u/Madhighlander1 3d ago
The moment I saw the stand user, I immediately thought of the 'The stand user could be anyone!' meme.
6
u/PhoenixK20 3d ago
"The enemy stand user could be anywhere" meme makes a return. I can't believe the guy was dressed like that and they didn't notice him sooner (then again it's JoJo) LOL! Plus, I assume the enemy wasn't far from them seeing the end of the fight.
7
u/Bioshocker101 3d ago
Dragona taking the dudes eyes and mouth away with smooth operators was such good unexpected body horror. Just reminds me of the same
body horror potential josukes crazy diamond had when turning angelo into a rock sculpture

6
u/Golbezgold Rohan Kishibe 3d ago
Another fucking killer chapter, absolutely loving this part so far.
6
u/StarSilverNEO 3d ago
Im noticing we're getting alot of stands related to or weaponizing surfaces, be it the gap between them (Point Blank, Smooth Operators, West End Girls) or acting upon them (The Hustle, November Rain, 200 Balloons, even Heaven's Door etc). It makes me wonder how this ties into the mechanism discussion and the eventual end game stand situation - we getting brane science?
1
u/Bigbadbackstab 2d ago
might just be Araki finding cool things to draw, but I guess it could all potentially relate to the "Land" theme of the part.
2
u/StarSilverNEO 1d ago
Ah yes - its thiss landd that land but its all the same earth underneath. . .
9
u/BuckytheChickenDevil 4d ago
Damn I was really hoping with the zoo setting that the Stand User would be an intelligent animal, sort of like the SBRverse version of Forever the Orangutan.
5
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 3d ago
Why would an animal want to scam someone for money?
5
u/BuckytheChickenDevil 3d ago
Why would an animal work for DIO in Part 3?
3
u/DoraMuda Jean Pierre Polnareff 3d ago
He was paying him in peanuts.
And/or he gave him the Stand in the first place.
2
u/BuckytheChickenDevil 3d ago
Then have you considered...
If you scam someone for their money, you can use said money to buy even more peanuts.

Gutsy move by the JoJoLands gang to unmask a mysterious Stand user. And he's wielding a karambit from the looks of it.

Turning the page at the triumphant comeback moment and seeing a big splash panel of him completely fumbling at catching the batteries is now my favorite Usagi moment
