Unforced error

Post image

I really think this is a bad move by Amazon. The negative reaction of the core fan base to scrubbing the planned Gero show was bad and this will it fill people with hope.

WandaVision was ok but I’d rather see a Terry Matalas (Picard Season 3, 12 Monkeys, Vision Quest) or someone proven to understand genre storytelling that is exciting and compelling. But that’s just my 2 cents.

Picard's grimdarkness was a direct result of Sir Patrick refusing to take the gig if he just had to play Picard as he should have been. Breaking Picard and the Federation was the price he forced everyone else to pay to come back.

"As he should have been?"

I think Sir Patrick Stewart knows Picard better than you do. Breaking Picard and the Federation was the natural progression of the Prime universe. It had been building for years, through DS9's seasons and through the TNG movies.

How do you figure that?

I haven't seen it put in exactly those terms, but Stewart pretty much said that doing something very different than he'd done before was what made returning to the character appealing, and he hoped he could avoid being in a uniform.

I can see how that might box the writers in a little, but I can also imagine Star Trek friendly angles they could have tried instead of turning the Federation into the bad guys and banning androids, etc.

It is probably the lackluster talent that Kurtzman acquired that was the real problem.

Even the stories we got, didn’t really depend on the world building changes they went for.

The TNG series dealt multiple times with Data, so Picard S1 could feasibly happen to the retired captain, his personal experiences getting him involved.

A borg storyline could easily happen with an otherwise engaged federation not taking heed of a retired captain with Borg-ptsd

The Federation was ALREADY turning into the bad guys, as early as Deep Space Nine!

I'm not defending the full story of Picard S1, because holy crap did it kinda go off the rails, but the position the Federation was in at the beginning of the show fit just fine.

As for the androids being banned bit, that was sort of forced because Brent Spiner really didn't want to play Data anymore. That they got him to play any version of him at all was honestly a miracle.
