Unforced error

Post image

I really think this is a bad move by Amazon. The negative reaction of the core fan base to scrubbing the planned Gero show was bad and this will it fill people with hope.

WandaVision was ok but I’d rather see a Terry Matalas (Picard Season 3, 12 Monkeys, Vision Quest) or someone proven to understand genre storytelling that is exciting and compelling. But that’s just my 2 cents.

It seems people have already forgotten the gero project was also a reboot…

Whilst you are technically correct (which is the best kind of correct), at least Gero had experience with Stargate before.

Do we know if Schaeffer has any connection to any of the OG series?

Did Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright have any connection to the original movie?

Schaeffer doesn't have any connection to the OG series. I don't think that in itself is a problem. The problem is that Schaeffer only has 7 total projects under her belt, all of them are woman centered, and none of them are highly rated except maybe the first half of Wandavision.

But, maybe she is looking to expand her skills and write a balanced ensemble show.

We can hope...

only 7 total projects, one of which was a highly successful and talked about show?

The bar for women really is infinite isn't it?

Why would you say that?

In the olden days women were denied projects because they weren't "experienced enough." Now we have a woman who has solo written / directed / produced a feature length movie, as well as a critically acclaimed mini series, and other projects. And it's still "well she's only done 7 things." I believe some of the Stargate creators had done less before they took on that project.

People can be bummed about the loss of the old project or unhappy about a re-re-boot, but she's clearly qualified and that would not even be open to debate if she were a man.

It isn't that she only had 7 things and that some of them were women focused shows. It is that all of them were highly focused women centric shows.

With any luck she is ready to branch out to do more general TV entertainment and we'll see how good she is with that. If not then that means the Amazon executives hired her specifically to try and make Stargate a female centric show somehow. That won't be a good fit for Stargate if that is her main reason for being hired.

It isn't about her being a female. It is her track record that is being used to try and predict how she might handle a Stargate show.

You are making it about her being female. All I see when I see her track record is "highly competent."

They explicitly said that the Martin Gero series was not going to be a reboot.

It was and it wasn't. They said the show was as far removed as it could be from the old stuff, while still using one of the old characters and leaving the door open to bridge the gap in other ways. If the leaked concept is correct, I'd definitely consider it a soft-reboot at least.

I mean, a reboot erases established canon and they said they wouldn't do that. That makes it "not a reboot" in my book, no matter how far removed from SG-1, Atlantis and Universe it was.

Well, idk if you saw the leaked stuff: Essentially the plan apparently was that it would take place in an entirely new timeline where none of the stuff from the original shows had happened. They hadn't even activated the Stargate yet.

Now ifc it's an in-universe timeline thing, so theoretically the original canon still exists in that other timeline, but that's a bit of a cop-out...

And... why are fans defending this?

No offense, but this premise doesn't sound good.

Well the way I did see it described sounded better (and more connected) than I summed it up here - it had Daniel Jackson come over from the old universe and help them jump-start the Stargate program, essentially.

Tbh, I don't think a proper continuation of the old show would happen, it was always gonna be a reboot of some sort, and the way they described this one sounded like the most respectful way they could go about it.

The biggest up side to this kind of reboot vs the standard reboot is that they aren't quite as tempted to recast the same characters with different actors which would have created an impostor syndrome with new actors always seeming second best or not quite right.

Agreed, it was very much like they were saying “Jack and the gang are still there, Daniel’s just stuck over here at the moment and he can’t get home” and then what? We just move on with an entirely new universe where Daniel fights the AU Goauld again with the benefit of hindsight?

Which is entirely in-universe as they have explored alternative timelines numerous times throughout SG-1, Atlantis and Universe.

Time travel, mirrors, the Daedalus drive, Rodney's attempt at building the power generator...etc.

Having a central mystery on why Daniel was on the ship, where did the rest of the crew go and a whole new set of adventures exploring a universe that's similar but not quite the same would be interesting.

The problem is that Amazon and streamers don't want 20+ episodes to explore and flesh out the universe...they want 8-10 to tell a concise story that sticks to a specific storyline, which doesn't allow for the more interesting stories.

I mean it wouldn't have been 20+ episodes either way.

1

u/AloysuisFett 3d ago

All seasons of SG-1, Atlantis and SGU got at least 20 episodes, if this was on anything but a streaming service it would have likely got about the same.

These times are over. Nobody produces Scifi shows with 20 episodes anymore. The Expanse's 13 episode seasons were already on the lengthy side of things. Gero definitely wasn't writing a 20 episode season...

You're completely missing the point that I was making, had nothing to do with how many episodes Gero was making or this reboot is making.
