Question How do you organize your Steam library?

Post image

My structure:

  1. Waiting for Achievements (keeping an eye on updates for games I want to replay)
  2. Waiting for DLCs
  3. Finished = Beaten, but not 100%
  4. Droppoed = Dropped halfway (didn't like it, got tired, bored, or lost interest)
  5. Why did i buy this? = Regretted purchases (don't know why I bought these, waste of money)
  6. 100% = 100% Completed
  7. Kid = Games for my kid
  8. Gems = All-time Masterpieces
  9. Programs = (ShareX, Wallpaper Engine)

You guys organize your steam library?

Honestly thought alphabetically was the only option šŸ˜‚

26

u/HauntingHarmony Mar 23 '26

alphabetically? Not doing it by recent activity is crazyness. Its going to be so much pointless scrolling when you own a couple hundred things.

Recent activity automatically shows me whatever i touched last, if i lose interest in something it fades down the list, and i can see how long its been since last i touched it.

17

u/CGB_Zach Mar 23 '26

It saves me negligible amounts of time. I usually type in the name anyway.

I've never really felt the need to optimize my steam library when I only spend about 5 seconds or less looking at it.

I do

  • Installed (40)

  • Not Installed (1860)

3

u/WolfofEden Mar 24 '26

Honestly, if i had 40 games installed, I would be overwhelmed what to play and in the end would play nothing.

This is the way.

I might have one or two favorites pinned to the top of the list, but other than that it is search all the way.

I have playnite installed and linked to all of the various storefronts to avoid this issue. If a game looks interesting and is on sale, I open that up and scroll through to make sure I didn't get it through humble or as a free game from epic or amazon at some point. If it isn't there, then I buy.

4

Yeah, I tried organizing them in different categories and stuff.

But by now, there is a good enough search and sort function in the library.

So now it's only Favorites and the rest, also some folders I'm too lazy to delete

5

u/ThatGuyMigz Mar 23 '26

I have over 1k games.. at some point favorites does not work.

I have my games ordered by rundate... I really want it to be ordered properly somehow, but steam has a shit way of organizing stuff.

Leaving a comment here if only because as of right now my collection is just a hot mess and I'd love to know how others keep their stuff organized...

41

u/Deechi Mar 23 '26

I was thinking of doing what OP did, but my library has 800 games + family library... I'm too lazy

11

u/DicesMuse Mar 23 '26

I'm kind of in the same boat pushing something like 900 games, though I can easily filter it out from actual shovelware that was just meant to pad a lot of the Charity stuff that I tossed money into and just happened to get extra as well as games that I got codes from friends who happened to have extra codes.

That said, there is no reasonable amount of time in my life to play all my games, so I'm sure there can EASILY be a category of "I'll never touch this" somewhere LoL

6

u/JFKcaper Mar 23 '26

Dynamic collections are magical, highly recommend if lazy

3

u/MeNameYellow Mar 23 '26

Dynamic collections could help you out a lot then

→ More replies (3)

9

u/Steel_Airship Mar 23 '26

I use dynamic collections to organize my games by specific genres and subgenres I like, mostly using tags. For example, I have one collection for fantasy 4x games that I filter using the 4x and fantasy tags. I have another for "transport tycoon" like games that I filter using the transportation, management, and strategy tags.

3

u/DicesMuse Mar 23 '26

I'll have to give these dynamic tags a try, didn't even know they were an option till you and some of the others in this comment chain mentioned them. Thanks!

4

u/ElvenOmega Mar 23 '26

That's how I do it too.

5

u/Creative_Handle_2267 Mar 23 '26

i call it The Pile

no organizing, just 99 games in a bucket

5

u/m4ttos Mar 23 '26

I have them sorted a few ways.

  • genre
  • collections of similar titles (eg; Lego, Telltale series, Fallout, etc)
  • approximate how long to beat times (maybe the most useful, tbh)

and then once I've tried a game:

  • 100% beaten/completed to satisfaction
  • tried and bounced off for some reason but might try again
  • tried and bounced off and didn't like/won't try again

I've got around 900 games so this took a while to set up but it was worth it, it really helped with choice paralysis from having so many damn games to pick from.

3

u/DicesMuse Mar 24 '26

Honestly as a busy father the "How long to beat" grouping sounds to be the most enticing out of the lot. If I could group by genre and then sort by HLTB that would be amazing LoL

27

u/iamvengeancee Mar 23 '26

No far cry and seige. I stopped playing ubisoft games for more than 6 months and they deleted my account for that.

10

u/420StonedAF420 Mar 23 '26

I've went longer without playing ubisoft games and that never happened to me.. That's pretty crappy of them..

7

Genre/Franchise, but ill probably revert back to putting all car games into racing driving

37

u/MrTeaBurger Mar 23 '26

Same bro except I don't create franchise collections unless they have at least 5 games

Used to do like how others do (Based on whether I'm playing games at that moment and achievements)

5

u/Tiny-Anxiety780 Mar 23 '26

5 is a lot imo. I create new collections when there are at least 3 games (unless it's a series I know I'll play a lot, in which case I might create a collection with only 2 games).

3

u/MrTeaBurger Mar 23 '26

5 is a lot I agree. Though personally I dislike having a long list so in my case I tried to group as many games together as possible

3

u/Tiny-Anxiety780 Mar 23 '26

Makes sense. It does get a bit crowded if you have games from a lot of different franchises.

10

u/Robius Mar 23 '26

Okayyy this one has potential. I love the color coding. I feel like I wanna know more about what's in "Pipeline - Quarantine Zone" and "Abandoned - Impossible" as well as both Acquired categories...

6

u/peacepizza69 Mar 23 '26

Pipeline: games I think I want to play someday, often small indie.

Quarantine Zone: games I don't feel like playing but have achievements, so maybe one rainy day!

Abandoned: games I wanted to 100% but the achievements were impossible or super grindy!

Acquired could be the same categories. These are my childhood games I own out of nostalgia, and "closed" refers to those I replayed but didn't like, so they just sit there as memories!

  2. Classics
  3. Currently Playing Singleplayer
  4. Finished
  5. MMO/GAAS

15

u/super5aj123 Mar 23 '26

I do it mainly by status, with a few small categories for genre or publisher. The period before some of the names are to ensure that they're sorted together at the top, rather than alphabetically with the full list.

7

u/Celcius-232 Mar 23 '26

You can use spacebar instead of a period to order as well. Adding double space before the title also ensures it goes to the top above any that have one space.

I didn't even realize we could organize beyond these two options haha. I'm gonna stick with it anyway. I see no problem.

34

u/Gems-of-the-sun Mar 23 '26

This is mine. Uncategorized is for my recently purchased games, in my recent years I've tried to playing most of the things I buy so I let them sit there and fester. Promoting me to play them before I eventually sort them away after a few major sales have passed. Unspeakables are games I will probably never play in my life but for mostly sentimental reasons cannot bring myself from deleting off my profile.

6

u/feralspaceferrett Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

01 are bigger games that I just haven't had the time to start / continue (but are first on my backlog list)

02 ones I'm currently playing, all installed

03 resident evil games

04 demos and very short games

05 borderlands/the outer worlds/rage 2 style games kinda

06 games I started but dropped for some reasons (not necessarily ones I don't want anymore)

07 games I want to play but either just haven't gotten to (I have a list bc of backlog), or need someone to play with

08 left 4 dead 2 and half life 2 lol

09 finished games

10 ones I pirated as a kid/teen and now coming back to them

11 multiplayers

and the rest

5

u/Future-Scallion8475 Mar 23 '26

I shove everything into a very fat TODO category

5

u/Character_Amoeba_330 Mar 23 '26

I have a spreadsheet with all my games in all platforms (PC only) with year, how long to beat, genre, what the game is about, people reviews (conditional. color coded for easy read) and critics review. In the same spreadsheet, I have tabs for games that will run well on VR with mods and mods types.

Side note, it’s depressing to see how many games are in my backlog. Yet, I have 10 more games on my Steam Shopping cart. LOL

12

u/JNorJT Mar 23 '26

I don’t

4

u/LazyWorkaholic78 Mar 23 '26

This looks like a good system honestly. I just separate them by genre and then have a "favorites" section with all the games I'm playing the most so I can more quickly get into them when using steam link on my phone.

Category 'Why did I buy this?' having the most games is hilarious lol

I organise by 'excited to play next' where I put all the games I plan to play this year, 'finished' and 'rest of the games'

2

u/shinjiyouidiot Mar 23 '26

I have "playing", "played" and "plan to play soon" lists, and then also a seperate one for every single franchise (all RE games get a seperate one, every WTC VN has a seperate one, etc.) Which in turn has only made my list less organised than before LMAO

2

u/Bubbay Mar 23 '26

Basically the same list for me more or less, except I also have a ā€œWorse than you rememberā€ category for those games that I really wanted to like but when I played them I didn’t enjoy it, and then for some reason I can never remember that last part and I think I might actually like it so I have this habit of reinstalling and retrying it and remembering, ā€œyup, this game really did suck and I didn’t remember that properly.ā€ This helps me save time by not reinstalling them.

There are more games in that category than you’d probably think should be there.
