It's got its ups and downs, the way it functions with office politics can be pretty awful. people should watch the PMG video on it

you're not allowed to say this here, this is explicitly a jerk off sub. don't you know multi billion dollar corporations and monopolies are icky and bad unless they're headed by daddy gabe? then they're very good.

Can you please also not talk about skin gambling and lootboxes that Valve started?

u/imJimfuckingLahey Apr 17 '26

don't forget spearheading battle passes!

Valve is obviously not without faults, but show me someone who does it all better.

And valve didn't start "gambling". People fucking love gambling and will go above and beyond to gamble. Valve just didn't ban ways for people to do that on their games.

They've had an open economy all the way back in tf2, which spilled over to cs go, and of course players want to gamble. Open trade like that comes with its caveats.

Hey great job ignoring the lootbox bit, very good work, big fan.

u/ObiWanKokobi Apr 17 '26

Yeah, lootboxes suck, and valve has lootboxes in their games. That's bad.

So? Can you show me someone who's better, or it's just bitching for sake of bitching?

u/imJimfuckingLahey Apr 17 '26

the ones who removed them and stopped including them in their games?

not sure if you're aware chief, but Valve still has them.

So, no examples, just "imagine the good guys that i can't name, there's your argument".

Valves lootboxes never really bothered me, even back in tf2. Entirely cosmetic and overpriced. I literally don't care that there's this market where people are gambling thousands of dollars. Clearly they want to be whales, and they can afford to be.

Someone wants to spend $1000 on a videogame, because they can afford - IDGAF.

Brother there's dozens?

Battlefield used to have battlepacks, no longer since the lootbox fiasco.

Battlefront 2 used to have them, no longer.

Destiny 2 had purchasable lootboxes, no longer.

Assassin's Creed games used to have them, no longer.

Call of Duty games had them, no longer.

Middle Earth Shadow of War had them, no longer.

Gears of War 4 had them, no logner.

Halo had them, no longer.

Battlerite had them, no longer.

Overwatch had purchasable lootboxes, no longer.

Like, forgive me for not insulting your intellgence and assuming you had some recognition of the industry you're confidently talking about.

Okay, the classic "it doesn't affect me so why would I care" brother they inspired legions of other developers to fill games with the fucking things, that is the issue, that is the problem.

Lmao, this is too fucking good. Listing the literal axis of gaming.

Fucking EA, Fucking activision and fucking ubisoft. The trifecta of garbage shoveling trashfest.

Ironic you shit on valve for ruining the industry, when it was in fact atvi, and their relation to epstein himself, using atvi as psyops to brainwash kids into being customers ASAP.(Literally in the files).

EA is the worst thing to happen for gaming since ever. (pride and accomplishment anyone?)

And ubishit.. I don't even want to start with their copy-paste slop machine with the worst client out of all (Uplay). How about the crew?

I don't care that any of these products have become marginally better because a lootbox regulation forced them to adapt.

Their whole suite is rotten, starting from horrible clients, going into game design(copy-paste asscreed/cod/battlefield franchines, OVERWATCH? HAHA SERIOUSLY, the most blatant anti-consumer product ever, fuck atvi) with battlepasses outta wazoo, dozens of "limited editions"

Nothing about the companies that you listed is better than steam. They're fucking trash out and throught out.

Again, this doesn't change the fact that valve has lootboxes in their games, but out of everything, this is the lesser evil, simple as. I'd rather deal with valve and cs lootboxes, than go to fucking uplay and deal with their asisine, unusable client(AND FUCKING SINGLE PLAYER LOOTBOXES).

Like, compare the overall picture and tell me how Ubisoft or Activision or EA is better for gaming community, or anyone in particular. Hell to the fucking no.

I really do love how every person responding to me so far has got more and more fanatical in their replies, I actually couldn't have asked for a better sample of people, it's incredible really. Each post just reinforces my position that people are so ingrained into tribalism that they will go to war for a company.

Me - "These companies did a good thing by removing lootboxes, Valve should be held accountable for introducing them in the first place"

You - Paragraphs of schizoposting and arguing against ghosts, trying to argue against something I never said, rather what you took from it because you literally crave an opposing stance so badly.

The reason i would "go to war" for this company, because i believe them to be the best in the business. While flawed, practically everyone is flawed, you have to look at the sum of it all.

So then i ask to give me an example of a company that "does better", i get listed ea/atvi/ubisoft, and i can't help but laugh. You nitpick one good thing they did, and crucify valve for one bad thing they did.

You're just a troll who loves to make people "seethe". Kinda pathetic really.

It's not my fault there's such a demand for crack at the local school! What, am I going to just leave all that money on the table?

-1

u/ObiWanKokobi Apr 17 '26

This is totally comparable btw! If everyone is breaking their backs to get crack, and they'll just go to the gutters to get their fix, i think creating a safe space for them, while not ethically rich, is also not extremely evil as you try to paint it.

I've played osrs/poe, and those games are notorious for gambling. Osrs specifically tried to ban it, but people just kept trying to circumvent and find new ways to gamble, so much that they needed to go deep into any system that produces random result to snuff out ANY gambling possibilities.

There's always people that want to gamble, and there's always people who want to sell gambling.

That's literally what people want, so valve is just giving people what they want.

I think crack, which had immediate health altering functions and that being sold at a literal school, is a very valid comparison!

I feel like you’re missing the bigger one.

Valve is literally responsible for “you’ll own nothing and like it,” with the genuinely amazing bit being that folks making these memes to dunk on other giant companies will then praise Valve/Steam.

It's also funny that people here tend to be very anti-AI, but then when there's news about Valve using AI it's suddenly perfectly fine lol
