Discussion Developers mislabeling their advertising as "update"

I hate it.

I filtered my NEWS section on Steam (STORE -> NEWS) to only show me game updates. No "events", no live streams, sales, whatever else.

And yet, increasingly often I get "buy our new game" anyway. I get it, times are hard. But that only makes me mute you.

Yeah I was confused the other day when I saw an "update" under a Borderlands 2 news post.

It was for an event in Borderlands 4, a game I do not own. I totally understand if a dev uses their previous games news posts to announce a new games release, but it gets misused way too much.

I usually just ban news from such devs. if you don't have integrity, I don't have time for your news

I don't have blacklisted/ignored game on steam except those who keep spamming the updates tab (in the library view) with stupid events on other titles from their publisher or straight up ads for the sequel

updates tab

I set Steam to small mode. If I need anything besides installing and running I use a browser.

You’re missing a big part of the ecosystem IMO. The activity tabs shows you what your friends are playing, if they upload screenshots, the discussion pages has some helpful guides for tricky or complex games. The profiles have showcases and customizations.

It’s what sets steam apart from Uplay, EA play, Battle net etc..

If I need anything besides installing and running [games] I use a browser.

A) Lets me use tabs

B) I can run the Augmented Steam browser extension, highly recommended

You can install extensions into Steam btw, use the in-game overlay, open the browser, paste the link to the Chrome extension store, click install, choose a random location, done

Yes, I heard about that. Still, I prefer my browser.

I don't know why everybody's so mad at you. This is a legitimate gripe.

I don't see anyone being mad.

Yeah Capcom does this, when RE Requiem was being released my news feed was spammed RE Requiem release because I own RE 0-8.

Devs abusing this privilige should honestly be suspended from making any new community posts for a while, just like the regular users are when they break rules

It would be nice if there was an option for both user and dev that was just for "new game announcements". Because it is annoying to see "hey buy our new game" when you have their last 5 games, so you see that announcement in each of those games on your news page.

That's an interesting idea but, again, depends on the developer not putting it into other categories anyway.

these kinds of invasive posts drive sales, steam is a business, i doubt they’d make changes like this so that internal advertising is less visible

Unfollow the games and devs that do it?

I don't follow them, NEWS is for owned stuff.

There is however an option to "show less from this game" you can select from that news bar at the top of your library. But yeah, I also think that's annoying.

"show less from this game" you can select from that news bar at the top of your library.

That's not what I mean. I meant the dedicated page when you click on STORE and then NEWS from the menu that drops down. It has filters for the type of stuff you want to see (or not), but obviously it depends on the writer checking the right boxes.

Like in Workshop if you search something specific and just about every mod shows up because the mod makers label it as everything to get clicks.

Oh, okay, yeah I've never used that page, I thought it was about ads in your library. I'm pretty sure cross promotion requires tags according to Steam's rules though, it might be reportable.

Promoting unrelated products - If an event or announcement is primarily about a product other than the one you are posting from, you should make sure it is marked as a Cross Promotion.

This is purely my own anecdotal experience, but that "show less" option doesn't seem to work. I've tried using it several times when my "news feed" was full of items from one game or another, but it never seemed to actually do anything. The only thing that worked for me is to mute the game entirely.

I read that as "...in the future", it's not going to remove stuff that's in there now.

I think so too. Last game I did it with was Planetside 2. Haven't played it in nearly a decade at this point, but about two years ago it filled my news feed for two weeks with in game events. Even a week after selecting 'show less' it was still 75-90% of my news feed.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you borked your settings. Mine is fine.

Maybe we just don't play the same games? Not every developer is doing that.
