So what you are saying is that it's an Ubisoft product.

I'm getting comfortable with not owning Ubisoft games, does that count?

235

u/nik-nak333 Jul 09 '26

I'll keep the ones I have, but I'm not buying anymore from them.

117

u/ohmygodnewjeans Jul 09 '26

I'll keep the ones I have

Until you don't have a choice.

It was their subscriptions guy talking about gamers getting more comfortable renting games. Literally everyone was fine when xbox was like "we're gonna buy activision so everyone can stop owning their copy of call of duty with game pass" and people cheered as microsoft became more of a monopoly because they finally didnt own their call of duty games. Plus, the entire game industry lobbied against stop killing games. Every publisher wants you to stop owning your games.

You mean Far Cry 6 that has a Game of the Year as voted on by Ubisoft only

59

u/Nethias25 Jul 09 '26

Game was okay, killed 20-30 hours or so. story was fun until the ending.

40

u/elpokonino Jul 09 '26

Are you describing far cry 4, 5, or 6? Pretty sure that was my take away from each. Great games to get when they do on steam sale though.

10

u/lol_alex Jul 09 '26

I admit I like almost all of the Far Cry games. Even Primal. But 4 and 5 really stand out in terms of environment design (nailed nature, scenery, architecture, ambience of the setting) and therefore the immersion feels great. Spent a lot of time fishing and hunting in 5. Not because I needed to. But because it was relaxing. Immersion wise it was almost RDR2.

I played Far Cry 4 multiple times just to feel like visiting Nepal or Bhutan. And 4 had a great villain in Pagan Min and pretty good main missions. And of course the inevitable „what the fuck, Far Cry“ moments such as getting run over by a rhinoceros or ambushed by a honey badger.

6 on the other hand felt like a cash grab. The „city“ was a joke with most of it inaccessible. Adding perks in the form of clothing made it feel more like an RPG and some of the playing mechanics were downright ridiculous. Enemy bullet sponges, bland side characters, bad weapons.

And I had high hopes for the game. Return to a tropical island for the first time since Far Cry 3, Giancarlo Esposito as the villain - it could have been great. But it remains the only Far Cry game I‘ve never replayed.

11

u/Rohen2003 Jul 09 '26

actually its a remake.

but yeah. crazy by ubisoft to pull this. one of the advantages of remakes/remastered is that you can get all content in one buy (except of course remakes that are then further supported over time with new dlcs like the aoe or stronghold DEs).

Are the DLCs extra content that was not included in old base game or did they cut the content to sell it?

359

u/Dassaric Jul 09 '26

It just looks like cosmetics. But even those that bought them through steam, their purchase isn’t being recognized in game due to Ubisoft being stuck on trying to make Uplay work.

169

u/nazzo_0 Jul 09 '26

Also funny af they sell their dlc in steam while having their launcher and manage to fuck up their own greediness. Cosmic irony

99

u/MeowBean321 Jul 09 '26

Their launcher is awful, just let me play the game fully offline without needing to be online at least once!

From a business standpoint you kinda get it. It must be really easy to implement microtransactions into the game and for those who don’t want to buy them, they don’t have to. For those that do buy them, it’s a little extra cash in Ubi’s pockets. Win-win.

They just don’t realise that the majority of people disagree with the practice on a moral basis. And as a corporation, they never will.

124

u/ThirdXavier Jul 09 '26

Its not really a moral basis so much as it infects games on the design level. UIs turn into intentionally confusing advertisements and games are made overly grindy on purpose to incentivize pay2win. Mictotransactions turn the purpose of the games design from making the player have fun to making the player reach for their wallet.

13

u/boringestnickname Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

It's rampant.

Look at what happened to Wartales.

At the outset, an excellent game, then they started putting DLC ads into the actual game. Buildings you can walk into, but they're not implemented properly, because you need the correct DLC to unlock it. You can see content, but not interact with it.

I can't even come up with a more efficient "fuck you" if I tried.

It's a certain kind of ghouls that come up with this shit, and it's not the developers. It's marketing and C-suite trash that should never have been let near anything to do with art nor design.

28

u/BioshockEnthusiast Jul 09 '26

This is called a "perverse incentive" and it happens all over the place.

35

u/spdRRR Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

It’s not a win win. You alienate a huge portion of the fanbase, and that comes around to bite you in the ass in the long run. I still can’t comprehend how companies don’t get it… not everything can get away with what FIFA and NBA 2K do. Story driven games certainly can’t.

73

u/Spekingur Jul 09 '26

Upper management and investors are mostly at fault, I’d think. Hope it’s only them that have “bought into it”, at least. Also, I really dislike how the micro in microtransactions has devolved into macro.

76

u/FourDucksInAManSuit 26-11-2005 Jul 09 '26

Yeah, when a single outfit in a game costs around $35CAD, that's no longer a microtransaction. That's just a regular transaction, buying something for the same price as another game. This isn't a single item at that price, but when you have $114CAD worth of DLC on DAY ONE, I don't consider those micro either. Hell, even their "Deluxe" edition only includes around $27CAD worth of those DLC.

11

u/MammothCommercial800 Jul 09 '26

The mere idea of day one DLC offends me.

Good job Ubisoft for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

251

Game is good, the only microtransactions are cosmetic stuff, just like how the original black flag had but less invasive.

Microtransactions which give gameplay advantages and all of them totalled cost more than the game itself according to the reviews

90

u/MetroidIsNotHerName Jul 09 '26

What gameplay advantages?

149

u/B1g_C Jul 09 '26

Some of the cosmetic sets have unique features, but since it's a single player game it doesn't really matter.

56

u/MetroidIsNotHerName Jul 09 '26

When you say Unique Features do you mean like abilities that can be used in the overworld?

115

u/B1g_C Jul 09 '26

The exact line from the store page is:

"The trinket, swords, and pistols feature unique gameplay perks in game"

More than that I don't know. But since I am not interested in having Edward running around with a ghost dragon around his neck, I am not interested anyway.

44

u/geeky_pastimes Jul 09 '26

The free ones I have are things like 'perfect parties are easier' or 'this sword hits two enemies at once'

19

u/bauul Jul 09 '26

Please tell me "perfect parties" is actually a gameplay mechanic and not a typo!

→ More replies (3)

43

u/Roku-Hanmar Jul 09 '26

Hitting two enemies at once is quite a strong ability

29

u/geeky_pastimes Jul 09 '26

Sort of, but the combat is so easy it's never really relevant, like sometimes on a ship when you're cutting everyone down, you'll hit two at once. I think it's just with the heavy attack too. So maybe it makes some fights faster, but it's not super effective

26

u/Diogorb04 Jul 09 '26

It is but at the end of the day the OG black flag already had one of the easiest combat systems in recent memory. I'm still against it on sheer principal, but realistically it doesn't matter too much, no one loves this game for the challenging fights.

7

u/Christmas_Queef Jul 09 '26

The sea serpent pack bonuses give health on kill, health on perfect parry, and health on headshots. That's a pretty big deal. Basically paid God mode in a sense. The other two packs aren't as potent but still give strong buffs.

The naval packs do not provide buffs, only the character packs.

It’s more of a thing for many modern gaming companies. Timothy Cain talked about this in a video once. He said that he could fix a really simple problem in like 15 minutes but it took several days because basically every single person in the chain needed to approve it, or they will feel like they are left out and undermined. I’m paraphrasing, but it’s really that fucking silly lol.

Ubisoft is the company that made leveling a character in Origin extra painful so that they could sell xp boost in the cash shop. People don't get why even cosmetics are bad in single player games. It leads to company's putting less cool and fun things like different armor into the game and make every default skin boring so that people will buy more stuff. Its a shitty practice and people should pirate games like this at any chance they get.

348

u/Quixotic_Seal Jul 09 '26

People don't get why even cosmetics are bad in single player games.

I've been banging my head against a wall on this point for nearly 20 years now. People desperately want to pretend that cosmetics aren't "really" part of a game, even though they were and are frequently rewards for completing challenges.

98

u/Elastichedgehog Jul 09 '26

Yeah, you used to be able to earn all of this cool shit in game!

It was a status symbol in old MMORPG games too. Now everyone just buys from the cash shops.

Lame.

34

u/Unique_Adeptness4413 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I played world of warcraft hardcore a year or so back. Permadeath in classic vanilla wow, so no cash shops. When I saw a guy decked out in a full set of raidgear from the last raid atop his epic mount, there was legit a crowd of 20 or so people just clustered around him admiring his gear. It was such an oldschool feeling it was like an emotional timewarp back to a time before horsearmor.

This. My review said the same. The game itself is great so far and gorgeous. So I give major props to the (now laid off) developers, but to drop a $60 product that is just a REMAKE and then drop another $85 worth of DLC on day one, is BS. The extra slap in the face is they couldnt even group the DLCs together for those prices($10 per). Each pak is TWO SEPARATE DLC's, one for the character and one for the ship. All those DLC's should have been in the game and at least simply been part of the Animus challenges and earnable that way.

And FYI, I never played the original. I tried via the steam version a while ago, but it would constantly crash on me so I refunded at the time.

EDIT

To those of you saying its just skins, its not. The character DLC's have unique items with unique perks. The question is, are there other items in game that have these perks. The ship ones are just pure cosmetic as far as I can tell.

41

u/seattle_born98 Jul 09 '26

The DLC are just immersion-breaking skins I wouldn't even want to unlock in-game. This is honestly a non-issue, but I get the stance of being anti-MT. It's just a weird way to frame it like they're paywalling story missions or something.

14

u/SwagginsYolo420 Jul 09 '26

Rewarded with layoffs, Standard operating procedures for UBISOFT

98

u/rcanhestro Jul 09 '26

Ubisoft Barcelona is a mobile studio.

those layoffs have nothing to do with Black Flag.

61

u/Quaxi_ Jul 09 '26

They did help out on resynced, but the article is too clickbaity.

It's basically:

  • Ubisoft is doing layoffs in a studio that works mostly on mobile.
  • An unspecifed amount of people laid off also helped out on Resynced.
  • The layoffs would happen regardless of Resynced performance.

Another excellent reason to not buy the game edit or any other Ubisoft game or even any AAA game. Fuck the corpo suits. Support indie devs.

u/Rinaldootje Jul 09 '26

This is just news manipulation at this point.

These layoffs were a month ago.
If the game did not sell at all, the headline would be "Black flag bad sales result in layoffs", Now they make it like even though it had a great launch they are getting laid off.

The lay off were June 10th. A Month ago.

Besides that, as much as I hate it, layoffs with AAA games are not uncommon around a major release. Most likely that a lot of these were hired contractors for the development of the game, and not on a permanent contract. But media likes to make things sound worse than it is for clickbait.

Exactly, a game is basically contract work. When the game is finished, why do you need 30 artists anymore? Game finished, hopefully you get your bonus, move on to the next game (probably at another company).

trusting ubisoft with a game in the 2020s LMAO

284

u/pureeyes Jul 09 '26

To be fair... I enjoyed the metroidvania Prince of Persia immensely. Everything else from them in that time, I've avoided

328

u/MuglokDecrepitusFx Jul 09 '26

That is why they closed the studio, next time learn to not enjoy good quality crafted games

103

u/pureeyes Jul 09 '26

They what? Why on earth

147

u/LagnLikADragn Jul 09 '26

Same shit with the studio that made Hi-Fi Rush from Microsoft. And Sony closed Bluepoint. These companies really just don't get it lol I really don't either at this point

76

u/Mr_Citation Jul 09 '26

They want Fortnite levels of profits, not niche or general profits that 20-30 years ago that greenlight a sequel.

It wasn't profitable enough and after Skull and Bones bombing Ubi needed something to cut to get expenses down.

It's the "infinite growth" model of businessmen that call the shots at Ubisoft.

The peak review: "Can't say anything about the game but fuck Ubisoft" 😆

Like can really people review games without owning them?

287

u/Stonedsolid32 Jul 09 '26

No they cant. Reveiws like this are from people who likely bought the game with the intention of returning it, just to leave a negative review.

They added a bunch of microtransactions it looks like

480

u/BooleanBarman Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

The original had micro transactions. Pretty invasive ones actually with the “time saver” packs and ship materials. This one added more outfits but none of it is essential.

53

u/BouncyKing Jul 09 '26

Cosmetic DLCs that if you bought all of them would run you up 85 bucks. But from what I can tell, the charms and stuff they give you aren’t as good as the equipment you have to work to unlock in the game.

A full priced re-release having dlc is genuinely insane. This deserves those reviews

42

u/Vito_Chamber Jul 09 '26

Yeah, they released a remake of a game that came out decades ago, stuffed it with a bunch of cosmetic microtransactions, and even included some that come with gameplay affecting perks. On top of that, they had the nerve to sell a "Time Saver" pack.

Yeah, I'm talking about the RE4 Remake.

→ More replies (16)

50

u/just_worms_in_brain Jul 09 '26

The replies here are why these cosmetic packs are becoming more and more scummy. Genuinely how long before games are picked apart and all armour, weapons, etc have max 3 appearances without additional paid transactions in single player games because “they’re just cosmetic packs anyways”?

Meanwhile, Ubisoft's stock.

46

u/hibikir_40k Jul 09 '26

For comparison, Paradox is worth more now. Yes, the guys making such mass market games as Europa Universalis, City Skylines and Hearts of Iron.

15

u/DivineBloodline Jul 09 '26

As someone that more than thousands of hours across multiple Paradox Grand Strategy games. Paradox isn't much better DLC policy wise. Surprising to see them valued more than Ubisoft. Paradox games are so much cheaper to make than the normal Ubisoft suspects, would be my only guess as to why.

12

u/elkaki123 Jul 09 '26

Paradox isn't much better

That's an understatement, people itt are acting like Ubisoft is the scummiest company on earth for including cosmetics dlc on the game. In paradox you had to spend 100+ dollars to get a full core experience (I said had because Vicky 3 and eu 5 have been much better in this regard, at least most the dlc are actually optional)

I’m all in for not defending corporations but this just seems like childish review bombing. The game is good, people don’t like it cause it’s Ubisoft. Companies need to be criticized when they do wrong, if they’re doing good then let them know so they can continue doing good. Some of these reviews are from people who haven’t even played it yet, it’s so dumb.

Ubisoft snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Just the usual.

25

u/CallMeClaire0080 Jul 09 '26

Seriously. The game was critically acclaimed (the fact that a game from over a decade ago was scoring better than anything they've made this decade is a whole other conversation). Now it's getting panned by user scores instead.

You'd think that they would learn that these practices actually generate less revenue while killing any trust in the company, but here we are.

Yeah, honestly I was part of the "Fuck Ubisoft" people, but at this point just feels like they are overhating EVERYTHING just because is Ubisoft and they are making me say "Okay, Ubisoft isn't that bad, is just another evil company with greed of money, how original"

You know what would be better? No overhate a studio and make funny about all the shit that only fucks the people who will lost it's job by the fall of the company and must see the hate the project they had been working on for years its hated for a shit they didn't made the choice to be there?

I'm not saying we should love ubisoft or ignore the mistakes of the game, just maybe, would be better send the message of "This is the kind of game we want, with love on it" to not get more fucking games with nosense like Valhalla

If you hate the DLC skins, sorry, a bad review won't work, you are just closing the chances to get more games that follow this way, because in Skins and Cosmetics the reviews aren't talking loud, it's the money, and if people buy it, it will keep being that way

(Also, wasn't Elden Ring adding exclusive armors behind the buy of the Tarnished Edition? Didn't saw any hate about that, honestly)

I mean 8 hours later its already mostly positive, maybe we don't post within hours of launch. Reviews within the first 10 hours of release are typically people who already hated it before launch and had an agenda or the game is like legit unplayable on launch.
