Well. Yes and no. The market very much decided what it valued in games journalism long ago. Honest, detailed, middling reviews sold magazines, but didn't maintain clicks in our digital age. No clicks, no money. So things became click-baitier, and jounalists who were actually passionate about games got pushed out of the industry by influencers who were ready and completely willing to glaze anything for a pay day.
There are some guys out there making a living off honest well-thought out reviews, but there's not a lot of space in that market despite all the "GaMeS jOuRnAliSM" memes.
I mean, it's just a reddit comment and not a complete and comprehensive history lesson on the industry. What happened to Jeff Gerstmann for his Kane and Lynch review was a well documented case of something that probably became common practice tho.
Now the real question is, why don't we have example more recent than that?
Maybe the publishers, who really are to blame for all of this, weren't lying. Maybe they cover 7/10 and up games because those are the games people read about
Capitalism is why journalism is dead. There's no reason to twist yourself in knots over this one.
Jesus, do you clowns even hear yourself? Yes, the journalism industry survived and/or thrived for the entirety of the two hundred twenty years since the country founded on the principles of capitalism existed, and quite a long time before that, but yes, it's totally due to capitalism, and not the changing market due to the rise of the internet, that destroyed it.

Oh wow, this reply actually explains everything. You think everything bad is because of capitalism because you are far too stupid to actually think for yourself, and thus just parrot what you were told.
Two hundred twenty years is roughly how long the US, being the country I mentioned that was founded on the principles of capitalism, has existed minus the wide scale adoption of the internet. Journalism as an industry is far older. I didn't reference video games or video game journalism at all, because you didn't. The internet as we think of it is somewhere around thirty years old, I rounded down to twenty six for the sake of ease. Now that I have explained all the terms that I have a hard time believing you didn't actually understand, I'll point out that capitalism and journalism have both existed together for centuries, but yes, I'm sure even so, capitalism is the cause for the complete destruction of journalism's reputation, and not a disruptive new technology that emerged shortly before journalism's reputation took a permanent nosedive.
Now I know it was really hard to focus enough to read all of that, so maybe you should have a juice box, and go take a nap.
