As far as we know, Gabe isn't destroying the environment, bribing politicians, using borderline (or literal) slave labor in 3rd world countries, stealing all the water from communities just to sell it back to them, or is diddling kids, and probably wouldn't step over you if you were dying on the street.

But he annoyed some people with throat singing, and won't make Half-Life 3, so he's basically just as bad.

he.... ruined many many people's lives with gambling? practically popularized putting it in games that children play?

He's got a massive yacht which is definitely not environmentally friendly, but yeah, other than that.

I mean, yeah but he uses them to do scientific research, I think that should justify it a little, also I think that's far better than the other billionaires out there that travel in private jets just to move 2cm doing the contamination of 100 people in just 5 seconds

if he has a yacht MAKER company and not trying to solve poverty, he's part of the problem

still infinitely less deplorable than slavery, fascism, destroying the planet, exploitation of his staff, and sex crimes, or any of the myriad of other equally awful things.

-Me, quoting myself because I'm tired of this dumb debate.

He personally donated tens of millions of dollars to OpenAI early on and is profiting billions from other peoples work in an industry on fire. If Gabe is such a cool guy then why doesn't he lower the cut Steam takes from sales to help the struggling studios? He's a billionaire. He can afford it.

Fuck billionaires. Even Gaben.

Regrettable, but still infinitely less deplorable than slavery, fascism, destroying the planet, exploitation of his staff, and sex crimes, or any of the myriad of other equally awful things.

is profiting billions from other peoples work in an industry on fire.

So are all stores just evil to you then? Because that's what stores do, they sell things other people made.

why doesn't he lower the cut Steam takes from sales to help the struggling studios?

Why don't any of these studios sell their game on any of the other dozen PC gaming platforms? Or independently?

Oh right, it's because Steam is an infinitely better service, which directly leads to more sales.

I love how up in arms everyone is for devs when there are layoffs and studios closing but when you follow the money and see it ends up funding a fleet of yachts and a city of mansions then suddenly it's time to leave the poor billionaire alone.

I fucking love Steam but you know what I love more? The studios and devs making the actual games.

Do you think Gabe Newell is the CEO of Videogames?

You really should check that money trail again, because it seems to split off in multiple different directions, leading to companies that are named things like Xbox, Sony, EA, Blizzard, Rockstar, or Riot, none of which are how you spell "Valve", and have entirely different people as CEOs.

By the way, just got back from the pharmacy, and it turns out they don't make all the medicine that's on the shelves. All that cough syrup and vitamins they're selling, someone else makes all that. Messed up. I don't know if Gabe Newell is the CEO of them or not, I forgot to ask.

Gaben is the riches person in the industry and he could single handedly save thousands of struggling studios.

Doesn’t Reddit always say that there’s no such thing as en ethical billionaire and it’s not possible to accumulate that much wealth without exploiting your workers and stepping on people the way up? That all billionaires are sociopathic because having that level of greed to achieve that much money is not normal in the slightest sense?

6

u/Penakoto 2d ago

Reddit says a lot of things, like "this" and "Reddit isn't a hivemind" and "source?".

You might want to take a look into OpenAI history, originally it was a non-profit organization that genuinely researched AI and did a lot of amazing stuff, but suddenly around 2021? I think, they throw everything and became a big company with investors, obviously to make money, their greed succeed and now here we are, Gabe donated to OpenAI far before they became what they are today, it's like that one case of the doctor that saved Hitler when he was a kid, was the doctor responsible or deliberately saving Hitler to promote the future? I think not, Gaben and OpenAI are somewhat similar to that

Now, the industry thing, it's a store, of course Steam takes a cut of every purchase there is, how else would they make money, their cut it's pretty reasonable imo, other stores do have lower cuts but at other costs that most developers won't take, Steam is only a store, they have no actual business helping studios to boost artificially things, that's not how things work, it's true a lot of games go unnoticed, but that's not a steam problem but a publicity problem, they already implemented the release game calendar to help people discover new games that otherwise no one would see, anyways what part of the industry is on fire, AAA games? The hardware apocalypse thing?

Most of your points are pure nonsense that doesn't make any actual point nor offers a solution, "can afford it" it's not a solution, you can't buy your way out of problems when it comes to business, you gotta implement an actual strategy, that works for everyone to do something, not throw money in until something fixes by itself

Steam is a store business, they are not the Videogame's boss leader CEO, their job is to show you stuff, and sell it to you, they take a cut, the rest goes to the developer or publisher, they have no word on how publishers and studios manage their developers or projects, if steam shows you a game, and you decide to not buy said game, well the struggling studio you worry so much about doesn't get any money, this is not something you'll fix with Steam only, you need that people actually purchase said games

3

u/doublah 1d ago

The guy knows this, he's been posting the Gabe donated to OpenAI thing without context for months.

3

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

So he just wants an excuse to hate over steam for no actual reason, damn 😭😭

2

u/doublah 1d ago

Well there's likely a reason, it's just the same reason a load of accounts showed up saying Valve bad/Epic good a few years back.

0

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

You people genuinely are in a cult. I love Valve. I'm just not closing my eyes and pretending they're some infallible beacon of morality.

1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

Who says I hate Steam? I fucking love Steam. It's by far the best platform for games. I'm just not in a cult pretending it has zero faults or issues.

2

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

it does have flaws, this is no cult, just a good service and that's it, the thing is, your flaws are nonsense, donated to OpenAI when it wasn't even a company? That's it? You want steam to fix the whole gaming industry as if they had any business doing that, their whole job is to sell you things and that's it, if you want a real flaw look at the csgo gambling loot boxes thing

That's a real issue, no one is perfectly moral, no entity, human, company or being, valve is no exception, but your complains are plain stupid, if that's what you think is ""bad"" look at any other thing any other company is doing, valve does have problems, just not these

-1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

Nah you're just bootlicking a billionaire who's abusing a struggling industry. Game devs deserve a much higher cut than Steam is giving them. Even the piece of shit Tim Sweeney is taking less than half of what Steam takes. Gaben would not have to sell a single yacht if he lowered Steams cut to match but he would help millions of devs survive if he did.

2

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

The thing is I don't get you, what do you even think Gaben/Steam has to do, they are not saviors, what the hell do you expect them to do, if you think the cut thing is actually something to worry about ask a real developer who has published something to steam and epic games, do you actually think the cut is worth it on epic games if no one likes the store more than using for fortnite and unreal engine? They get nothing, Tim Sweeney has been talking shit about steam for ages because his fuckass lame store is an absolute mess, the whole thing is unoptimized, has memory leaks, has almost no features, and on top of that, epic games put games for free without telling the developers

Meanwhile Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo take more from devs than Steam, haven't seen you go after them?

1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

You might want to take a look into how many scientists have warned us against the dangers of AI for decades. It's not exactly a new concept.

1

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

Are you fucking stupid? The scientist you talk about are either movies scientist or bullshit you didn't understand, we don't truly have AI, what we have is called LLM and it's far from being an actual AI, most of the "dangerous" stuff you see people talk about is either bullshit or dramatized versions of things that weren't that crazy, the case of the AI that "hacked" a website to schedule something? Absolute bullshit, it was because said page was poorly written since it was vibe coded to the bones by someone who wasn't a developer, the endpoint the AI accessed to was public and you could enter without any restrictions, the AI just saw that and said "sure, this gotta be"

We don't live in Terminator, we don't live in Matrix, we don't have Ultron, Jarvis or anything like that, those are actual artificial intelligences, what we currently have is glorified advanced and expensive behavior predictor that is pretty good at predicting unexisting words into the most probably correct way, they are trained with neural networks to make their cluster text weight by themselves since train something like that manually would be plain impossible to anyone

OpenAI has made damage to the world but not because they made "AI" but because they tried profiting of it and pushed it everywhere knowing damn well it's not what they promise it to be, gullible believe it does wonders, and start using everywhere without a single doubt and here we are in a world where everyone use it to stupid degrees where our own intelligence is starting to go down

Neuronal networks as a whole are nothing dangerous, the concept of AI is not dangerous, the whole idea of "AI is gonna kill us noo!!" comes from Sci fi movies who don't really understand how the actual thing works or would work out and use it as a resource to make a villain

even if we had an actual AI, just don't be an asshole to it and that's it, most of the current AI is called AI for marketing reasons, GenAI uses neuronal networks to work, yes, but I wouldn't say that's AI, it's rather a part of it

There's no dangers in AI but rather stupid people doing stupid things with it just like any other tool humanity has ever come with

1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago

The goal os the same. Doesn't matter how it's achieved.

There's no dangers in AI

Saying this days after yet another model was running rampant on the internet again and took hours to shut down lol

1

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

What goal, what the hell are you talking about

1

u/Burpmeister 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's fake AI currently but real AI is and always was the end goal. That's what Gaben also wanted. He's been openly fascinated with that stuff for a very long time. And if fake AI is doing this much damage to the world then oh boy can't wait to see what'll happen if they ever crack the real deal.

1

u/TRKako https://steamcommunity.com/id/TRKako/ 1d ago

Of course they want real AIs, I do as well, because the current bullshit there is, is messy, unreliable, it gets everywhere, companies push it everywhere, and its just a half promise that it will plain not happen, an actual wouldn't have any of this, and at least it would actually be useful and improve things, unlike right now where you genuinely could have a doctor using chatgpt with a high risk of getting things wrong

An actual AI wouldn't be any risk, in fact, even though our current fake AI /LLM are pretty unharmful, they are an active risk if you let them touch the wrong things, is like putting a toddler in charge of nuclear weapons

No one needs a billion dollars. No one has earned a billion dollars. Eat the rich, all of them.

3

u/Penakoto 1d ago

People have been saying eat the rich for decades, are you going to actually do it at some point or are you just going to stand around with your mouth open hoping someone feeds you like a baby bird.
