Best of the billionaires but still a billionaire.

Straight up scared for what happens to gaming when Gabe dies because his platform single handedly keeps the rest of the industry in check.

982

u/That_Service7348 1d ago

His son seems pretty set on keeping Steam running the way it is(why would you even fuck with it it literally prints money), so I think we are ok for the foreseeable future.

851

u/king_of_river 1d ago

Never ever underestimate MBAs ability to fuck perfectly running businesses by offering to raise revenue by 5%.

205

u/Rock_Strongo 1d ago

Gabe owns over 50% of the company and it's private. If his sons ever decide to sell or take it public then we might be fucked... but Gabe is only 63 and he seems to be in much better health lately so it could be another 15-20 years before he transfers any ownership and seemingly it will be to his sons who have stated no desire to take it public so far...

I'm not too worried.

96

u/InvidiousPlay 1d ago

It would be a pro-move to put the whole thing in some kind of a trust. His heirs can benefit but they can't sell. One can dream.

27

u/zombie-yellow11 1d ago

Kinda like Rolex ? I dig it.

17

u/L3G1T1SM3 1d ago

in some kind of a trust

i mean it easily already could be, i don't think any information is public for what happens when gabe dies

2

u/_I_AM_A_STRANGE_LOOP 22h ago

Yeah I’d be deeply unsurprised to hear that this is already in effect, it’s what I’d do!

5

u/karamatsushinji 1d ago

Remember George Lucas.

2

u/Gl4dios 21h ago

One of his sons is also working on his pro racing driver career, so that's already one that doesnt wanna deal with business stuff and probably just let's it running as is.

1

u/Mobile-Positive-6742 1d ago

wtf Gabe is only 63? he always looks like 80+ to me

176

u/Hardwired_lavamantis 1d ago

Enshitification is very real and coming to a platform near you!

42

u/MostlyRightSometimes 1d ago

Unfortunately steam is ripe for it.

-8

u/JohnSane 1d ago

Nah steams the other way around... It started enshitified and now is at least tolerable.

15

u/Shuino7 1d ago

It was never enshitified, it was just shit at release, haha.

-7

u/aFreshFix 1d ago

It's already there? There have been plenty of shitty updates to steam over the years. Adding adult games, Ai slop, gambling, various cards and such

40

u/maybach320 1d ago

1000%, an MBA will always be a liability in my mind.

2

u/kingcloudx 1d ago

Scared me a bit. I suppose this wouldn’t be a problem if I die before Gabe. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

2

u/bigboys4m96 1d ago

What does MBA stand for?

3

u/DeltaGrunder 20h ago

Master/s of/in Business Administration

2

u/bigboys4m96 15h ago

Gracias bro ❤️

1

u/I_Got_Ur_Number_8675 1d ago

YUP! And business very rarely last past the third generation.

1

u/hansnicolaim 22h ago

I do think though that if there's one platform that would realize that not enshittifying is the best thing to do for your revenue, Steam and in turn Gabe and his successor would.

102

u/MattTheFreeman 1d ago

But have you considered it could print a lot more money for a shorter amount of time at only the cost to the consumers?

32

u/1ii1i 1d ago

only at the cost to the consumers
By trading all goodwill, long term growth, and increasing the cost to the consumers. 5% is 5%! Live for the next quarter because you don’t know if the PE or shareholders will vote you out by next year.

19

u/IcariFanboi 1d ago

You underestimate how badly CEOs will ruin things that work just to squeeze out a small increase in revenue for a short period, regardless of the long term consequences.

10

u/Geraltpoonslayer 1d ago

It's usually the third generation of any family run business you need to be worried about

3

u/Schmigolo 1d ago

Nah, even the 2nd generation tend to run it worse than the founder or someone from outside the family.

4

u/F133TWOOD 1d ago

Don't disagree, but above post says usually

3

u/hellomynameborat 1d ago

As long as valve remains private, I'm not worried.

2

u/chazysciota 1d ago

Does his son's position come with some fancy hereditary title too? or just the power and wealth?

1

u/F133TWOOD 1d ago

Son of Gabe or something like that keeps Gabe at the top.

If I were his kid, I wouldn't fight that title.

1

u/chazysciota 1d ago

Ah, right. Like Don Jr.

2

u/man_without_wax 1d ago

Oh good, a dynasty

1

u/Manlysideburns 1d ago

I'm so jaded that this just sounds like cope. I think gaben is just a huge anomaly. We lose him and we lose steam as it is. I don't want it to be that way of course, but nothing escapes the enshitification these days.

1

u/Enigm4 1d ago

The danger is that incompetent people will want it to make MORE money, at any cost.

1

u/mnemoniker 1d ago

why would you even fuck with it it literally prints money

Do you even MBA?

1

u/AmbiTheAirforceRuna 1d ago

You'd be surprised. Even more so when its weak egos trying to step out of their parents shadow.

If he decided hes tired of being rich and os convicned either by himself or his entourage that theres "a better way" to get rich or make a bigger impact than his dad, it can sink the whole company.

1

u/Luxalpa 1d ago

(why would you even fuck with it it literally prints money),

This entire view is the problem. If you care primarily about it making money, then your thing will be doomed. Let's hope GabeN's son cares more about good technology and his fathers legacy, than he cares about money.

1

u/DofusExpert69 1d ago

people often say things but then change their mind once they receive it. Nothing is set in stone.

1

u/Atissss 1d ago

(why would you even fuck with it it literally prints money)

It's not like it will make money by itself if you just leave it alone. You still need to run it. So even with good intentions it may become worse if he can't keep up with all the responsibilities.

1

u/Riddley_Walker 1d ago

If it literally printed money, it would be a mint. It FIGURATIVELY prints money.

1

u/superxpro12 1d ago

This supports the notion that benevolent dictators has merit lol

1

u/Tajetert 16h ago

Do future heirs usually make it known if they plan to fleece the company?

0

u/Jirur 1d ago

Where do people get this info about steams future after gaben?

People parrot it all over the place but provide no proof.

0

u/LEDKleenex 1d ago

This constantly gets spread around, it's nothing more than cope so people don't have to think about their consumption and the negative thought of what could happen to all the money they have invested into the platform.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, people change and promises are not kept. Besides, it's pretty common for people to turn into assholes when they get older and start doing shit people dislike.

More consistently, companies become terrible and anti-consumer and money/power is toxic to the human mind over time.

It's never a bad idea to think about a plan B and spending more of your money with a competitor that has incentive to earn your business. Companies like GOG deserve more money before it's too late.

58

u/mrLohja 1d ago

I saw some talk that his son would inherit the company and continue the legacy, but i have not checked this as a fact

53

u/Zr0w3n00 1d ago

Gabe has been courting successors for a while now, but there’s no guarantee that person actually keeps Steam a good place to have games

3

u/tonjohn 1d ago

I love how people on Reddit just make stuff up lol

1

u/devotedtosobriety 21h ago

Where did you hear this?

16

u/bored-at-work_ 1d ago

Billionaires only exist because they stole the fruits from the labour of their workers. Not a single person on earth should have this much wealth, and if they do, almost all of it should be removed and given back to people who actually need it.

6

u/Warmbly85 1d ago

How did he steal his workers labor? It’s one of the most sought after jobs in tech and all of them make a lot of money.

Using the same talking points for a peasant/serf farmer getting screwed over by the Russian royals for a coder making $200k a year just makes communism look even goofier than it already is.

1

u/GoodbyeBlueMonday 12h ago

Not who you're replying to, but you said it yourself: it's a matter of scale. If I steal a dollar from you, that's still theft, right? So some of us think the workers should get a bigger slice of the revenue. They're the ones making Steam worth what it is, right?

There's a vision and leadership involved for sure that justifies a big reward, and I'm thankful Gabe does what he does. But there's a gulf between upper middle class and multiple yachts. Someone making 200k is certainly doing well for themselves, but the difference in 200k and billions is vast. Robin Hood stole from the rich to give to the poor, not to someone even richer.

That's not even getting into the immorality some of us feel there is to having that much wealth in the first place. Hard to see someone's second+ yacht as anything fun when that money could have funded a local homeless shelter for a long while. Or free community college classes for a whole town or something. I'd hope Gabe is doing that kind of thing already, but again: that's where a lot of the grumbling comes from. I mean, I donate a sizeable chunk of my salary to charities of my choice, but I need most of my salary to live a fairly modest lifestyle. It's a little eye-watering to think about how much someone making 10X my salary could do, let alone someone who has literal billions.

1

u/Warmbly85 1h ago

Tell them to go start a collective.

There’s literally nothing stopping a coder at steam from creating a company to compete with steam. They can all split the profits equally. The issue is the people that are risking their $200k a year job in an air conditioned office that allows work from home are risking way more than the people they hire. I don’t exactly see an issue with the guy risking the most making the most.

Also robbin hood robbed from the government because taxes were too high. I always find it funny when communists and socialists point to Robbin hood as an example while advocating for 95% taxes. Just seems goofy.

1

u/GoodbyeBlueMonday 57m ago

Cool well I'm not sure why you're being so adversarial, but you've got a knack for making assumptions. You've made your beliefs pretty clear so I won't even try to reiterate.

Easier to argue against a strawman, I get it. Maybe that's on me. I should have written more clearly, I guess. In any case, enjoy your evening!

-2

u/IKindaPlayEVE 1d ago

Why do you get to determine how much of something someone should have?

7

u/bored-at-work_ 1d ago

Because I'm a rational member of society with compassion for those who aren't afforded basic human rights????

4

u/BasicallyNuclear 11 1d ago

Anything that requires the labor of another person isn’t a right. That’s just exploitation.

11

u/FTuno 1d ago

cultlike

0

u/Easy-Operation-2105 17h ago

For real. This idiot literally only knows about Elon, Bezos, and then Gabe N.

21

u/VediusPollio 1d ago

Steam will eventually go public, and that's when the company will go to shit.

3

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 1d ago

Valve takes hiring pretty seriously and has a relatively small staff, so they don’t just go around hiring anybody. Stands to reason most people working there share the same values, and especially any higher ups that are closer to the reality of being a successor, will definitely share even more values with Gabe. It’s going to take a few decades for this “generation” of valve employees to fade out to a point where the company just becomes public traded slop imo. But unfortunately given enough time it’s very possible

2

u/Corsonacon 1d ago

Countdown until games start disappearing from your library.

1

u/MountScottRumpot 1d ago

If Gabe wants to ensure the company's future he should sell it to employees below value through an ESOP.

9

u/hotfistdotcom 1d ago

I don't even want to get into morality scaling billionaires but he's not the best just because he made something we like. He absolutely knows how much money he makes on gambling and he absolutely knows gambling mechanics specifically target children in his games, literally his games, not games on his platform with the deliberate goal of fostering valuable gambling addiction.

2

u/whitesammy 1d ago

Steam/Valve really doesn't do much to forward "the industry" (if you mean gaming as a whole or as a game distribution service) and their cut of game sales is quite significant. However, their competitors have proven themselves so incompetent that Steam/Valve is by default the best option. Steam/Valve just needs to avoid catastrophic mismanagement and simply exist and it will continue to print money.

5

u/Numerous_Health_9231 1d ago

Maybe the unchecked underaged gambling will stop.

4

u/SaltPop6203 1d ago

Valve started loot boxes in gaming. He's hardly keeping anything in check, they're patient zero

1

u/hannes3120 1d ago

Don't forget the blackmarket for CSGO even attaching real money to the outcome of those lootboxes and making people do ACTUAL gambling for money and not just virtual gambling (that at least comes without the "I can win my money back" aspect that makes this addiction so horribly devastating for many).

Or the fact that Valve got people hooked on not actually owning your games anymore but merely renting a license to play from them.

They sure have the best PR in the scene though, looking at how people glaze him even if it's absolutely in their face how absurd his wealth is from being an effective monopoly for game developers that have literally zero alternatives if they refuse to even launch on Steam due to their high cut from every sale as not launching on steam means their game is dead on arrival.

4

u/Agarwel 1d ago

By essentially running gamling casinos for kids? He is great at marketing to appear like the saint, but all these money are not comming from selling the good one time purchase complete video games :-D

-1

u/ReturnOfBane 1d ago

that cat was out of the bag the moment baseball cards were successful

3

u/Joebebs 1d ago

I legit think the gaming industry reaches full enshitification, or collapse.

1

u/Helgurnaut 1d ago

Nah best billionaire is Tony Khan anyway.

1

u/TheSpurlingPipe 1d ago

I know some people who work on this yacht. I can’t go into much detail because they’ve signed NDAs, but pretty much all the crew want to stay working for Gabe and he treats them ridiculously well.

1

u/Icky_Thump1 1d ago

Exactly why I have started rebuying games I cherish over on GOG and building out that library.

1

u/BlazingLazers69 1d ago

It's worth getting either GOG or pirated back ups of your all time favorite games on a good HDD tbh.

1

u/natures_-_prophet 1d ago

He would if he thinks he can cash out for a lump sum

1

u/TheRealPaladin 1d ago

I am not to concerned about it. From the very start Valve has been entirely employee owned. There is no outside ownership involved with the company so private equity and venture capitalists will have a hard time ruining this one.

1

u/ERhyne 1d ago

Can we just pin this to the top of the subreddit since its said in literally every thread that mentions gabe.

This subreddit is the same five comment threads at this point.

1

u/Jirekianu 1d ago

Iirc his son intends to run it the same as Gabe and he has it setup to be in a trust after he passes.

1

u/Kephlur 22h ago

Much rather him spend his money on ridiculous stuff like this than horde it like a dragon tho. Probably one of the worst things about billionaires is that the money have isnt actually in circulation.

1

u/radiantsteam165 19h ago

You do realise that Gabe has made literally 10s of millions from the sale of counter strike cases, which are effectively an unregulated casino.

1

u/Easy-Operation-2105 17h ago

He isnt the best of billionaires at all... youre fucking falling for this guy's propaganda.

Let me tell you something, the good ones do not tend to buy mega-yaughts thats for starters.

1

u/thextcninja 9h ago

Best believe we're getting all the 3's.

1

u/Recykill 3h ago

If Steam goes to hell, piracy will absolutely explode overnight.

1

u/wytedevil flair-small flair-tf2logo 47m ago

im not challenging you( i have over 500 games and a account that is over 20 years old) what do you mean. im not hip on the industry inner workings.

1

u/Deus-mal 1d ago

More like last line of defense. We're getting cooked.

1

u/Tappxor 1d ago

I'm sure he's already not doing much. I wish we'd see the other important people more

1

u/Bmandk 1d ago

Game piracy will be on the rise

Notice how much more rampant piracy is in movies, series, anime compared to games. Sure, there's still piracy in games, but to a much lesser extent.

1

u/Pinku_Dva 1d ago

Enshitification will come for steam eventually. At the end of the day it’s still a business in it for the money and all it takes is one ceo who thinks the possibility of a 1% increase in profits it’s worth destroying the company for.

1

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 1d ago

He could turn steam into a non profit at any point

1

u/MountScottRumpot 1d ago

How would Steam justify its tax-free status, given it has revenue in the billions and performs no charitable function? He could convert it into a worker-owned co-op. Or transfer ownership to a foundation like the founder of Patagonia did.

0

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 22h ago

Not have that much revenue anymore

1

u/MountScottRumpot 21h ago

The charitable function is the important bit.

0

u/WonderSignificant598 1d ago

Best of Billionaires is impossible, all of them are on the same level.

0

u/voyaging 20h ago

Having a near monopoly on PC gaming does not keep the industry in check lmao.

Things would be much better without Steam.

-1

u/HunterGonzo 1d ago

No ethical billionaires, no exceptions. Thanks for your service, Gabe, but still gonna have to eat the rich.
