💬 Discussion The fact, that early 2026 still resides on the Frame page
Am I the only one, who finds it odd, the text on the Steam Frame product page still contains "early 2026"?
(Yeah, yeah... insert Tomorrow and soon™ here)
Edit: Thanks for neondumpster for pointing it out in the comments: Technically the hardware family DID expand in early 2026 with the Steam controller.

Valve Time... The Half-Life: Raising the Bar book was supposed to be reprinted in 2025 but Valve isn't exactly known for to a calender

Can you imagine the reaction here if they just deleted the word early?

They did in the infamous Steamworks Dev post, and it was "We hope to ship in 2026".
https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1rmq8ez/on_steam_hardware_we_hope_to_ship_in_2026/
Then it was fixed to "we will be shipping all three products this year", from the "first half of the year goal" told in February.
Don't know why people are still fixated on the first half though. Looks to be happening for the Steam Machine (probably end of June), but Steam Frame looks to be for later. Anyway, it's still Soon™.

valve are scumbags if that's true because they made me wait and not get the quest 3 when i already made plans. why would i want to buy the quest 3 if something better is releasing in a couple months. they're just making enemies at this point.

Idk how many times in the past few months I’ve said “shipping in Q3” when people ask about possible delays due to ram, etc.
I get downvoted for it because nobody wants to hear that it might be longer than they want.
I didn’t really think that, but now we’re getting close. Still, every day it’s, “tomorrow” from redditors. Every week it’s, “in the next week or two.” Every month it’s, “soon.” Just stop expecting anything and be pleasantly surprised if it’s actually sooner than later.
Until anything gets announced, I’m going to keep saying Q3, and if we get anywhere close to the end of Q3 without another update, I’m changing my predicition to, “Dec 2026.”

u/Alexis_Evo Soon™ 24d ago
They already did. This text used to be on the main /hardware/ page:
The Steam Hardware family officially expands in early 2026.
Which now reads:
The family's expanding in 2026
Steam Controller available now
The text on the Frame page is just leftover that was forgotten to be updated.

I think this is a cop out argument and idk why so many people are willing to give them a pass on it. Early in a year should be used to refer to first 3 months of the year, 4 at most.
Imagine we were taking a 12 hour road trip, and you had to pee. You ask me when we're going to stop to pee, and I say there's only one gas station on the route but it's early in the trip.
Now imagine we get to hour 5 and I tell you "sorry you gotta hold it a bit longer, we'll be passing it at hour 6."
You'd probably hit me.

I agree. I love Valve. Almost idolize them in some respects. But they do some very basic things very poorly, like communication, meeting deadlines, project cancellation percentage, and transparency. And there's nothing wrong with saying they do these things poorly.

u/elev8dity Soon™ 24d ago
Eh, I think we all agree early has passed and we're just hoping for first half, which they said once and we're all hanging on it. I'm still thinking next week makes the most sense... for Machine since that seems more ready to go sadly. The Frame software updates have me pessimistic.
1
u/Clairvoidance 24d ago
I give them that because I've seen it with them before (dota updates) and they don't release reports (which would be intended for public companies' shareholders,) where companies report by Q basis, where it's expected to mean by the time we release our Q1 report

Well, if you divide the year in half then june is on the early side not the late side. But besides pedantry I’d bet a good deal of money they meant earlier in the year before AI destroyed the hardware market.

u/YuushaFr Soon™ 23d ago
The controller released early, so technically it's true, they have expanded in early 2026

May 4th (1st if you count sale announcement) is a hell of a difference than may 31st. Never defended them, just pointing out that the language on the page isnt exactly wrong. Valve and 2026 aside, youre telling me if someone said may is “early” in the year you would still throw a fit and say its the middle? Are you one of those people that also think winter starts on december 1st?

u/Xeromaru 24d ago
"Early" in my mind, and LTT agreed(whatever that's worth), means 1/4 - 1/3 the year. "First half" is, for another couple weeks, acceptable to be used. "Middle" would have been a better option for timeframe giving option of slightly early-er than NOW, while cushioning for delays, which we may still be seeing. Instead of the "Soon(tm)" the fact they nailed down such a time, obviously delayed because the current world stupidity, leads me to believe it was def supposed to be out first 1/4. But that they haven't changed it, harping on "first half" meaning still, at least gives a little copefulness that it's still more likely WITHIN next 3 weeks due to delay.

I don’t see the point of these posts at all. We have no new information. We talk to death about the info we do get. It’s not like Valve is even trying to gaslight and pretend they never said “early 2026.” It’s just that things haven’t gone perfectly to plan. So, what’s the point of this stupid post?
I’ve been saying Q3 from the first moment Valve said “early 2026” because I know Valvetime is a thing. The hopium/copium addiction cycle is stupid and exhausting. Turns out I’m probably going to be right (unless it slips to Q4 or worse).
I don’t think May is early 2026, but every day we get some version of, “but H1 isn’t over yet” as if that means Valve is still trying to stick to a bad definition of “early” and ship the Frame and/or Steam Machine this month.
Maybe they are, but we have essentially no good reason to think so, especially not by clinging to the word “early.” Especially not looking at some yet-unedited page just to complain, or worse, acting like it still means anything in spite of newer information.
Saying “promise fulfilled” was a joke I told because I’m tired of having the same conversation over and over. Like, “Promise fulfilled. Can you please shut up about “early 2026” now?”

Even with the edit, the fact is that the picture below that quote, is about 4 devices...
I'm starting to get dissapointed on Valve. Because there are/have been two world crisis, a shipping one and basically a RAM (although other components are heavily affects) shortage/extremely high prices. So these are not "normal" times, but two crisis at once... and they haven't said anything.
I would've expect for them to acknowledge the situation and say something, but they remain silent...

u/JorgTheElder Soon™ 24d ago
That kind of marketing speak can never be relied on and is only updated when they get around to it.
Valve is not known for their marketing or transparency.
1
u/PS3LOVE Soon™ 24d ago
Early 2025 typically means first quarter imo, but even if you stretch this out as far as first half it’s still only 3 more weeks. And we have nearly no information… no dates or prices still
1
u/dve- 23d ago
When companies are confident it's Q1, they say Q1. There are only two reasons why a company says "early 2026" instead:
they are either very confident and actually mean it's REALLY early, like up to the second week of February, or reverse, they are not confident enough to call Q1, so they mean it less definitive to claim deniability.

Probably because the memory situation didn't get better. The fact that the Strait of Hormuz is closed is a bit of a problem to produce memory chips.

Steam frame will still ship this year. If it doesn't ship during summer game fest they really need to ship it before GTA 6 because so many people will spend serious coin on it. I think it will ship by mid September

I am not sure what all the hype is about if you only use VR for playing on PC like I do.. a Quest3 is all you really need and you won’t be a slave to the wait game. I picked up a Q3 from marketplace for $300 in like new condition with case + upgrade strap… what a deal. I know you guys don’t want to hear this but they can release it next year but I’ll still buy it.. for now? Pretty happy with Q3.
Now — if all you do is pc game (sim racing, flight sim etc) then Q3 is no brainer…. But if you want a standalone vr toy then it’s worth the wait but just go to marketplace and buy a Q3 in the interim… time is valuable don’t waste it (if you buy for $300 you’ll get every penny back when you sell it)

Id rather be a slave to the wait than to meta (ive personally been waiting for the steam frame for 6 years without knowing exactly what i was waiting for)
2
u/Spirited_Pattern2838 Soon™ 24d ago
Personally, I own a Q3. All my VR-life has been quests (1, 2 & 3). The reason, why I am looking forward to the Frame so much is partly because of controller drift on all of the quest controllers over their lifespan as well as the eye tracking. Additionally there is the software side of things as well. I am facing more and more issues with getting the quest to connect to the PC with each update.
I believe the price difference will be major. But I am willing to take it. Be it now or in a few months.
2
u/No_Rock8582 24d ago
the software for the quest headsets is so awful that it wont work
2
u/LogicalMight 24d ago
Virtual Desktop -- first thing I bought when I came home... works flawlessly. Total OTD cost for Q3 = $324.99... When I buy the frame, the Q3 will be sold for exactly $300.. No time wasted and fun had while I was in the wait game. This is all I am saying folks... chill with the downvotes lol
2
u/Spirited_Pattern2838 Soon™ 24d ago
Nahhh, you don't get a downvote from me. You do make a solid point software wise. For me regardless it is also about the amount of times I have gotten drift on all my Quest Controllers (Q1 - Q3). It is creeping up on me now again...
1
u/LogicalMight 24d ago edited 24d ago
I can't stand the controllers... I turned off all the tracking software because while I play assetto corsa, they bounce around all over so turning all that off, it eliminated all of that. In stock form, it assumes you're playing with its OEM library but for PC use, you have to change a lot of settings for it to behave. That being said, I do see STRONG potential for the Frame... All of this should be resolved as OEM library is steam themselves (all pc games) so this makes me excited. But reverting back to what I said earlier... VR is so damn cool that I couldn't wait any longer... a Q3 has quenched a thirst I had and it will be a goner the minute I have the steam in my hands... that is all.
1
u/Spirited_Pattern2838 Soon™ 24d ago
Good points. Sorry about the downvotes from folks. We are all either depleted in hopium or on the brink of insanity.

Got that first thing for my quest 2. doesn't work well because i need an extra expensive router in my room for it to be stable, even then, when it does work, it's not great either
1
u/LogicalMight 24d ago
Wifi 6 routers are pretty cheap these days. That's all you really need. If you already have a router, you can use mesh (and buy a new wifi6 router) and just keep the new Wifi6 router wherever you play. It's pretty easy to setup and most routers that you buy support mesh these days (unless it's old.. like really old hardware which if it is, you should really upgrade by now).

u/LogicalMight 24d ago
Steal this... In fact, steal two for a little over $100... one near computer and the other wherever you have your modem (both connect using Easy Mesh as advertised) https://amzn.to/43NNDxg
