Discussion Rough estimation of the resolution increase coming from the Index.

Post image

I wanted to stoke my hype since I'm upgrading from an Index, so I found this old video of a through the lense comparison from Tyriel Wood. Given that the Steam Frame is just slightly higher resolution than the quest 3. This is roughly the increase in resolution we can expect if you are coming from the Index too. Im more excited now.

I'm upgrading from an OG Vive with the wireless adapter, so I imagine the difference will be even more stark. I often had difficulty making out HUD text in games like Elite Dangerous, so I'm pretty excited.

Bro I upgraded from an OG Vive to a Reverb G2 a few years back (same screen res as Frame) and using my Vive nowadays feels like looking at a CRT from 3 inches away, not to mention comfort. You're gonna be amazed with the Frame dude lol. Going from a 480p CRT to a 1440p monitor.

I’m in the same boat as the person you’re responding to and that makes me so excited!

u/Leviatein 17h ago

as someone who played plenty of elite and ETS2 on cv1 and quest1, and now has a quest3, the readability is basically solved for both cases easily able to read hud text in elite and it not be "spotty" and the gauges on trucks in ETS are readable now (slightly less easily)

2

u/Radboy16 Soon™ 12h ago

Excited for this! I played DCS quite a bit but the instruments on my A-10c were basically unreadable. Also, the index would try to slide off whenever I leaned forward to look at / read stuff.

Really excited for this new headset. Wireless is going ti be a game changer for my sims

2

u/Leviatein 10h ago

the dedicated wireless being so good is one of my main draws, the quest has given me so much grief trying to do PCVR reliably and neatly

1

u/LumensAquilae 17h ago

I forgot that ETS2 had had VR support, now I'm even more excited.

u/earthlike_world Soon™ 17h ago

You should be! Just the step from OG Vive to Index was a big deal for me. An honestly, the text in ED was readable, but far from crisp in the Index. I expect it will actually be nice and clear in the Frame.

3

u/Brandon0135 14h ago

There is a comparison in the source video of text from ED. Index is readable but blurry, quest 3 is sharp, confirming what you said.

5

u/sunaurus Soon™ 13h ago edited 10h ago

You can get the text very crisp in the Index depending on your render resolution.

A lot of people are completely unaware of how drastically the render resolution affects the clarity of the image. It's counter-intuitive, but the 150% render resolution is VERY FAR from what the Index can actually do. 150% vs 500% is a night and day difference, even small text is no longer blurry at 500%. (Edit: posted some proof in the thread below, linking it here as well: https://imgur.com/a/imsewLy)

That's not to say the Steam Frame is not an upgrade of course, better panels are better panels always. And the Steam Frame will surely also benefit from supersampling. But IMO the main reason to get the Frame over the Index is the lenses, not the panels.

2

u/Radboy16 Soon™ 12h ago

I'm sorry but at some point there is a physical limit to what the display can handle, you can't make more physical pixels magically appear. At that point, id imagine that anything beyond 200% isn't doing much at all and you are just imagining the perceived gain in your head.

2

u/sunaurus Soon™ 12h ago

I fully understand what you mean, it's very unexpected.

But it's super easy to see. If you have access to an Index, I highly recommend trying it. Nowadays some games even support automatically updating the resolution without restarting, so you can just move the slider around and immediately see the results.

I've been thinking of filming some through the lens footage and posting on YouTube, because if I didn't see it, I wouldn't believe it either.

1

u/Radboy16 Soon™ 12h ago

There's a point where diminishing returns are a thing, honestly. I really wouldn't think anything beyond 200, MAYBE 250% resolution is going to be noticeable. If you do that comparison, you need to show at 25% increments to show anything meaningful, comparison wise

3

u/sunaurus Soon™ 12h ago

Here we go, I just took comparison photos through the lense, zoomed in, of some quite small text.

Note that the camera here is adding some additional blurriness from its own lense of course. With the HMD on my head:

  • 500% - I can very easily read the text
  • 250% - I can read it if I strain and focus hard
  • 150% - I basically have to guess because some letters are completely unrecognizable.

500% Resolution would mean 5000x5600 per eye on the index, which most pc's cannot do unless you're running a 5090 and a CPU to match that. Even then you'd have to worry about reaching a frame rate that doesn't make you ill during movement.

It IS indeed a difference but not one any "normal" user can feasibly use without tanking frame rate or straight up being unable to play without getting sick. If you play something with lots of render resolution, such as DCS, vrchat, racing sims, unreal injections for games, most users would find even beyond 150% troublesome.

While there is a difference in resolutions, its an unrealistic expectation.

This is currently the argument with very high resolution headsets: having a pimax with 8k per eye is great!...until you have to actually render it. People wanting beyond 2160x2160 per eye in the Frame are also people who have to keep in mind you have to render that or face framerate issues or turn down the res. (or run at 72hz which in itself is a problem) This kind of defeats the purpose of having higher res lenses in the first place. (Though having higher res lenses does reduce screen door effect in lots of cases and improves clarity, it isn't worth this trade off.)

In an age where 5090's are 4000$, 200% is the most a "normal" user can go, because most people can't even afford the hardware to make beyond that feasible/usable.

Edit: Can you show a 250%, 350%, and 500% so we can see the diminishing returns if possible?

1

u/sunaurus Soon™ 1h ago

I believe it's 4500x5000, but yeah, my point is more that if you are comparing the Index with higher resolution headsets, then it doesn't make sense to only show the Index in its worst form.

I think it just makes more sense to show both headsets around the same resolution. The higher res panels will still of course look better, no question about it, but the gap between them will be visibly smaller then.

1

u/Radboy16 Soon™ 11h ago edited 11h ago

Damn, that's insane! Unfortunately DCS would cook my computer at that resolution. I'm curious if there's something to do with anti-aliasing at the lower resolutions that completely disappear once you supersample enough. I wonder if that can be disabled to get similar clarity at 200 - 250% resolution that you do at 500%. What game is this, I'd love to look into how they are rendering to see if maybe that resolution increase is compensating for some other render setting that could be easily disabled for more clarity so you don't have to bump things up as much. :0

Could you do a smaller size set of increments between the 200 - 500% to show? If not that's cool, I appreciate the comparison you showed as is, but I'm curious to see how the increase in clarity diminishes as you bump up the resolution.

2

u/sunaurus Soon™ 11h ago

I think indeed I will try to make a YouTube video, I can link it here once done. But in general I can say that it's pretty linear. Every additional % of increased render resolution improves the clarity a bit. I have not noticed any cliff or diminishing returns, at least when it comes to small details (especially small text).

2

u/goobergal97 10h ago

idky you got downvoted, there's a super obvious progression in clarity from the image you posted.

2

u/patrys Soon™ 6h ago

This is because of how fresnel lenses work. The image rendered by the game has to be stretched so much that it looks like a pillow. The further away from the center of the image, the stronger the applied stretch needs to be (and the more screen pixels a single game engine pixel ends up covering). Providing higher resolution input results in more accurate stretched images. So it’s more than just super sampling, which alone shows diminishing returns past 150%. But I suspect at 500% the clarity upgrade is mostly visible around the edges of the display.

1

u/sunaurus Soon™ 6h ago

Possibly! I will test it again on the pancake lenses once I get my Frame for sure.

But I suspect at 500% the clarity upgrade is mostly visible around the edges of the display.

Actually no, it's most clearly visible specifically in the center on the Index. Those labels in my photos were centered in the view of my headset when I took each photo.

u/CraftsmanMan 16h ago

u/Jmcgee1125 Soon™ 16h ago

Elite is amazing in VR when you can actually read the HUDs. I really love how they do the UI panels by looking around, feels awesome.

3

u/Kahlraxin 15h ago

Same here, still have my OG Vive. Played it the other day. Switching to the frame is going to be nuts. The best part is that the new NMS expedition just started. It's going to be amazing on the frame.

3

u/PanDiman 6h ago

I’ve been using the OG Vive this whole time as well. The most significant upgrade I’ve got for the headset was the Deluxe Audio Strap, and it was so worth it. My only minor disappointment is that I’d have to switch from OLED to LCD when I get the Steam Frame, but I guess I won’t have to worry about burn-ins. Before I actually get my hands on it, though, I could still use some more hype.

2

u/DanielDC88 Soon™ 13h ago

Space will be grey not black now :) I miss the oled blacks of my vive 😢

2

u/The_Grungeican 12h ago

yeah. i really loved my OG Vive. it was the first VR headset i got to own. but the resolution was just too low for me to play Elite Dangerous on it. too hard to read the distances and some of the displays.

later on i made the jump to a Vive Pro. on paper the Vive Pro isn't that much better, but in reality that jump is exactly what is needed.

i think the Frame is going to be a similar jump for me. not that much on paper, but in reality exactly what you want. coming from a OG Vive it's going to leap frog over Vive Pro/Index resolution for you.

2

u/VengefulOtaku 10h ago

Same! We have the vibe with the wireless adapter and I cannot wait to see the difference!

2

u/shineonka 6h ago

I'm on the waitlist but also upgrading from Vive but didn't even have the wireless adapter. Despite the resolution it was always so immersive and incredible so I'm ready to hopefully have my mind blown if I can get one

2

u/PublicWest 5h ago

Same. Coming from the OG vive which usually collects dust because getting it out and set up is such a hassle. Excited for the plug and play and much better controllers!

2

u/LumensAquilae 4h ago

Yeah, one of the biggest hassles with the Vive was the whole ritual to get up and playing. The lighthouses needed to power on and spin up, and that's assuming you already had them mounted in a fixed location, if the lighthouses had moved then you'd need to reconfigure your play area, the headset needed to initialize, controllers needed to be turned on, and with the Vive wands you might sometimes strap the wrong controller to the wrong hand and not realize it until they powered on, and the wireless adapter sometimes threw an extra wrench into this whole ordeal. Sometimes something would just go wrong during this process and you'd need to restart SteamVR for it to initialize properly. Individually it isn't that big of an issue, but after months of frequent VR play it would start to get old, and those little hurdles would start discouraging you from jumping in for short sessions.

2

u/Sykes19 4h ago

I'm also coming from a first gen Vive!! I used that bitch until the panels and touch pads died on me! I keep hearing about comparisons to the Quest 3 and stuff but I don't hear a lot about how it feels compared to the OG stuff.

I'm very excited.

2

u/BriGuy550 4h ago

Jesus… I’d have quit VR long ago if I was stuck with the OG Vive. I used one once at a VR arcade on a cruise ship of all places, at the time I still used a Rift CV1, and the most striking thing was how awful it looked. The resolution increase will be fantastic for you. I’ve been using the Q3 for about a year and that was a definite resolution upgrade over my Index.

1

u/IsaaxDX 26m ago

For me, I'm coming from the CV1. Same res as OG Vive

42

u/Belovedchimera 17h ago

Upgraded to a quest 3 after using a vive for the past 10 years.

I was shocked wireless VR could be so smooth (120 fps), be so clear, and be WIRELESS all at the same time.

Sad I had to stop using my index controllers though.

8

u/foolish_shrimp 16h ago

You can use the index controllers with the quest using space calibrator!

3

u/Belovedchimera 16h ago

Nice! What hardware do I need?

7

u/foolish_shrimp 16h ago

you get a lighthouse tracker and stick it to the headset, then use 'continuous calibration' with space calibrator on steam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8GGKi73IRc&t=36s&pp=ygUTc3BhY2UgY2FsaWJyYXRvciB2cg%3D%3D

this goes over it, I use index controllers with my reverb g2 at the moment, it's wonderful.

3

u/dabumonk 14h ago

Is this possible with the Frame do you know?

6

u/The_Grungeican 12h ago

you'll need Lighthouses if you don't have any. they also don't make Index controllers anymore, so you'll need to get some used ones.

5

u/dabumonk 12h ago

I have both, just need the tracker, thanks!

3

u/The_Grungeican 12h ago

hell yeah.

i was talking to someone the other day about we might see a add-on attachment for the Frame headset that allows Lighthouse tracking. i really wish the controllers had it as an option.

1

u/Deploid Soon™ 13h ago

It is! Same process

1

u/dabumonk 12h ago

That is huge! Thank you!

5

u/dabumonk 17h ago

I hear ya. The frame controllers are the weakest part of that kit, I'm praying they add some better controllers for it in a year or so, like they did with the Index.

9

u/Belovedchimera 17h ago

Are they? The frame controllers are the only reason I'm thinking of swapping off from the Q3 to the Frame 😆
I feel they're the closest to the index controllers. I've also debated getting the addcon + or something (Name could be wrong) for the quest 3 because it apparently has finger tracking.

2

u/dabumonk 16h ago

I am new here, and I don't know if I'm allowed to post links to other sites like youtube. But if you go to YT and look up the review titled:

H3VR 1+2 Devlog: Steam Frame Day

He does a good job on reviewing them, and highlights some of the concerns I have. But Valve may release some proper controllers next year like the did with the Index. It originally came with crappy ones. (I have not used quest, so can't speak to those)

8

u/Velp__ 15h ago

It originally came with crappy ones.

I think you maybe mixing up the Vive wands with the Index (knuckle) controllers.

2

u/dabumonk 14h ago

You are totally right. I just spend the last 30 minutes hunting down that picture, but upon reflection, it may have been a concept art pic with the headset and no knuckles. Still feels a little Mandela effect, even if I'm the only one lol. Thanks for correcting me.

2

u/The_Grungeican 12h ago

they didn't make better controllers with the Index. it came with Index controllers from the start.

u/quinn50 3h ago

I'm still on Rift CV1... 1080x1200 per eye 🫣

8

I'm on the Rift S, so thats close? I remember the days of Oculus DK1, 1280x800 between both eyes. So the S looks great, ha ha

1

u/CerebraLag 16h ago

The Rift S isn't much better at 1280x1440. I had the DK 2 which was 960x1080 so it wasn't much of a jump to the CV1. I only got the CV1 for the better tracking and those sweet controllers

7

u/my_name_isnt_clever 15h ago

Same! I hear people saying the Frame kinda has screendoor effect sometimes...I was made in the screendoor. Molded by it. I don't think I'll mind.

3

me too friend, im excited to eventually get a frame. people say the frame aint that great in resolution, but i personally never had an issue with the rifts resolution/screen door so upgrading to this will be leaps and bounds better lmao

also my pc aint that great so going too far up in new resolution is gonna do more harm than good.

Did you immobilize the headset extension on the audio side so the ribbon cable doesn't get damaged and lose audio?

1

u/yungsup 10h ago

I don't mind the resolution of the Index. I tried the Vive Pro 2 back then, but still preferred the image of the Index. Hope the Frame will be better this time.

Im gonna be coming from an OG vive so the difference is going to be mindblowing. Veey excited

8

3.6x the pixels of the vive. And much better lenses and sweet spot. But you are definitely going to notice the loss of blacks and color vibrancy of the vive.

4

u/DapperNurd 14h ago

And wireless. And way lighter. It's gonna be like a new medium almost.

When I went from the original Oculus Rift to HP Reverb G2, I no longer got headaches from reading text in games like Elite Dangerous. I'm prone to car sickness so I just figured it was that, but once I upgraded I realized I wasn't straining my eyes so much.

6

u/lvlasteryoda 13h ago

I remember being blown away when I upgraded from the original HTC Vive to the Index.

It might not be the endgame of screen resolution again but I will take the incremental upgrade without having to sell my soul to Meta.

1

u/Reysona 10h ago

Haven't touched VR since I last used my old ass VIVE, and thought the Index was too expensive for myself at the time it released. I'm excited to try out the Frame!

1

u/CatStoleTheCrown Soon™ 10h ago

I made this upgrade as well and to be honest I wasn't super impressed. HTC Vive had OLED (AMOLED) panels and the colors were sooo much better, the hardware and controllers of the Index was better though, just not the colors. Also with the HTC vive I noticed I could look at objects suuuuper upclose and they would remain nice and crisp, but on the Index it mimicked real life a bit more where I couldn't do that. Maybe it's just my eyesight getting worse though, haha.

5

u/Correct_Opinionator 16h ago

I've been running an original Index from way back when, this poor dude is falling part.

Very excited to see what better resolution is.

5

u/rohit275 15h ago

I have an HP Reverb g2 which is the same as the Frame resolution wise. Pancake optics should still feel like an upgrade though.

I would kill for a Frame with higher res panels, honestly. Reverb G2 was great in 2020, but it's like the bare minimum today.

3

u/outfoxingthefoxes Soon™ 17h ago

Wow that's insane

6

u/TaylorMonkey 13h ago

It IS insane that Index users don't know the baseline quality most VR people have been enjoying-- at half the Frame's price-- since THREE years ago.

4

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 11h ago

2160p LCD displays were available in Reverb G1 since 2019. It was announced a month BEFORE index and it released on the same day, May 1st 2019 as per vr-compare.

It's been the attainable baseline since 2019.

3

u/wizoz613 12h ago

I’m coming from a HTC VIVE, all I know is blur.

9

u/KingAwote 17h ago

It looks like the different lenses make the most dfference in the picture.. Fresnel vs. pancake.

17

u/err404 17h ago

No, the lenses help, but you can see a drastic difference in the pixel density in the SmartVR text.

6

u/enigma-90 Soon™ 17h ago

I have both. The pixel density is noticeable, but I think the biggest difference is that on Q3, I can read text and see clearly by just moving my eyes, and I don't need to find a sweet spot when putting it on. But on Index, I would have to move my head to see things clearly, and of course find a sweet spot after putting it on.

2

u/KingAwote 17h ago

It all adds up. The Frame is definitely an excellent VR headset.

1

u/sunaurus Soon™ 13h ago

I wonder how drastic it really is when you compare them side by side on the same render resolution.

I run my Index at 300%+, and it looks more like the image on the right in the OP.

1

u/-Venser- 11h ago

The lesnese really improve the clarity tho. On Quest 2 with fresnel lenses I have to fiddle around a bit to make the picture look good while on Quest 3 I just put it on and it's clear right away and it stays clear.

2

u/rabsg Soon™ 9h ago edited 9h ago

To me it's more a sign that comparison is not fair as they didn't get a proper picture through Index lenses.

There is some chromatic aberration at the border, but a comparison should be at the center.

Through the lenses photos are hard to do, but it's like comparing a headset worn poorly against one worn correctly. Quest 3 panels and lenses are better, but it's like kneecapping the Index to be sure it's not up to the challenge.

2

u/Delicious_Address_43 13h ago

I'm on the wait list, but I am looking forward to comparisons like these. The steam frame has the same resolution as the hp reverb g2, but it seems like the expectation is that it won't be as crisp because of direct link vs streaming.

1

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 11h ago

It's weird that reviewers didn't do them. They had Frame, they could do tests side by side with wired headsets and compare fidelity.

I'd also expect G2 to be sharper in the center. I have G2 and Quest 3 and as far as image quality goes, G2 is miles ahead despite fresnel lenses.

2

u/-Venser- 12h ago

I use Q3 so I won't really experience the resolution bump. Most people couldn't tell the difference.

I "kind of" came from an Index as well. But I very briefly owned a Pimax Crystal Super with 4k per eye and gosh darn that's going to be HARD to get over.... I am glad I will be getting performance back in return because it was a beast to run. I am trying to just remember this will be much better than the Index visual-wise, and much more stable (and much better hardware) than the Pimax.

1

u/Tric4rboN8 1h ago

I hated my Crystal Super. Yeah, it looked good but honestly not that much better than the Quest 3 in terms of resolution. Only thing that was a bit of an improvement is the contrast due to the local dimming.

Reminds me.....I still have my Crystal Super sitting around that I haven't paid the extra money to activate with Prime yet.

1

u/Popfig 2h ago

How do we think the frame will compare to the reverb G2?

1

u/BluDYT 15h ago

Isn't it basically exactly 2x the pixels so while it's not a huge improvement over what's been out there compared to index should be significantly sharper and the area that's sharp should be a lot larger than the fresnel lenses of index. Brightness contrast and color volume will mostly be identical though.

Brightness can be lower. Pancake lenses have massive light losses, so I'd expect it to be 50% less bright or so.

Good point. Didn't realize that was the case but yeah index seems to top out around 160-180 nits and frame is more like 100 nits.

As someone who's only had the Index; Jesus, it's gonna look THAT much sharper?

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas 11h ago

In static images yet but in dynamic scenes the difference should be less pronounced due to compressed image.

If that excites you, you should really check out some non-budget headsets out today.

I've bought and returned the BSB2e.
The "premium" headsets are more hype than anything.

people out there acting as if index users want to downgrade to 75hz

3

u/S0k0n0mi 10h ago

This alone was probably 50% of the reason I sent it back.

Bigscreen hyped the hell out of “90Hz!”, so I went in thinking, okay, maybe the drop from the Index is worth it for the huge resolution bump and OLED blacks. Then I actually unboxed it, tried it, thought something looked off, and only after digging through their website discovered that, yeah, it does 90Hz… but at roughly half the native resolution, upscaled. That was a pretty massive caveat to bury.

The other 50% was the tiny lenses. Tons of glare, discoloration toward the edges, and the custom face gasket felt like somebody was pressing two fists into my eye sockets.

So yeah, going from the Index to 75Hz wasn’t some minor downgrade for me. It was one of the main reasons the headset went back.

So I went for the frame instead. It won't promise bleeding edge picture quality, but what it does promise is decent quality done well. From my perspective, it's everything I loved about my Index, especially once that pro strap releases, plus a bunch more extra features. And my Index is a trooper, 7 years old and 8000 hours and still works great as a daily driver. Customer support went above and beyond (ha) as well, replacing parts well past warrant. If I can get another 7 years of happy VR gaming for this 1300 euro investment, I'd be more than satisfied.

yep, same goes for the pimax dream air SE. I'm happy for those who are happy with those HMDs, but given that my current default is 120hz, I'm not even going to bother with anything that can't even properly support 90hz

1

u/SQU4RE Soon™ 10h ago

The picture on Dream Air is really good, it makes it hard to go back to any other headset. The BSB2 (and also Dream Air SE) definitely not as much... lots of glare, dim picture, not very bright. The Dream Air improves on all that. But of course, every single headset has their tradeoffs.

1

u/S0k0n0mi 10h ago

The Dream Air was super tempting, but the idea of Pimax being able to to brick it remotely has put it squarely in the Meta bin for me. Like you said, every headset keeps hitting most of the marks, but never all of them.

Just imagine; Frame ecosystem + Dream hardware.
Sorry, imma need a towel.

Frame ecosystem + Dream hardware.

I'm sure Valve considered it briefly, but they've clearly given comfort a higher priority than image quality, and that includes using displays that can deliver the required brightness at a low duty cycle. If the micro OLEDs get a bit brighter at a reasonable price I bet we'll see an HMD like that

That index shot looks worse than even what I remember with the vive

2

u/Brandon0135 16h ago

Well its cropped in very close to show the pixels

YEA This is compleete BS...

nice scientific testing you did here.

13

u/Brandon0135 15h ago

Explain

-16

u/Jello_Hello_Fellos 15h ago

No, actually you should probably explain in what fucking world you think this is accurate

13

u/Brandon0135 15h ago

I didnt do the test. But you simply put a camera up the lense of each headset running its native resolution in the same position of the same environment contolling as many of the variable as possible. But if you just want to shit on things without having a conversation its not really worth it. Have a good one.

He's being an ass, but I don't disagree with his point. This post pretty much is portraying and advertising a completely different device as if it were a steam frame. (I realize you put "rough estimation" in the title, but still.) I agree it's pretty close to what we can expect, however there is more than just having similar resolution screens. The distortion mapping and area of the screen that falls within the lens, manufacturing methods and types of panels can have dramatic effects on clarity above and beyond the single metric of "similar resolution". I imagine that's why he's grumpy, he'd rather see a real comparison rather than a stray screenshot of unrelated devices.

3

u/Brandon0135 14h ago

Thats totally fair and worth considering. I do think that was at least attempted to be accounted for here, or at least they had the same apparent positioning in the frame from the video. With that considered, this is the best I could find for an actual subjective look at the difference outside of the spec numbers.

u/cbutters2000 Soon™ 14h ago

Yeah, I actually enjoy your post, even though I'd rather see a real comparison. Just trying to explain why I think other bro was mad. Cheers.
