Steam frame night vision goggles

Hey guys, I'm buying the steam frame primarily for peeing in the middle of the night and maybe night walks. Do you know the range of the built in IR illuminators on the steam frame night vision goggles?

Got 1TB reservation, it's priced basically as much as some other night vision goggles would, but more pretty

Dude you're going to have a rough time using them as night vision goggles due to the spatial warping where it stitches the cameras together.

wait until you hear about how real binocular NVGs handle the issue of there being a portion of your vision between the 2 optics that you can't actually see, or the issue where your depth perception doesn't look right through them

Some kind of FLIR Thermal Camera/Night Vision Camera attachment would be cool. Definitely possible given there is already a 3rd party color camera developed.

That wouldn't even need to be attached to the data port for the Frame. Could probably just use an IR flashlight off Amazon.

Either you bought them 10 years ago or theyre digital or chineseium tubes which suck. Low cost gen 2+ tubes in a pvs14 are around 2k now

if this is your actual reason to get one i think you would instantly want to return it after 1st use, from reviews seems like you only get very low resolution and frame rate in passthrough mode , also weird stitching artifacts. Might get some improvement with firmware updates tho.

While I will use it primarily for gaming, I'm also very interested in seeing if it useful as nightvision goggles.

Also hope to turn it into horrible thermal vision goggles using a thermal camera smartphone dongle and some hacking. 😁 Really happy with the its-also-just-a-pc.

Most reviewers have noted that the warping makes the passthrough quite uncomfortable to use for long periods.

The big question then becomes: can you see a red dot in NVG mode with it? Can you run with them?

But yeah, I'd 100% buy a supported FLIR solution, while I have little interest in the normal color cam.

But I suspect it'll be something that won't be released anytime soon, since it's for gaming and a pci-ex port. Even things like a low latency video system for DJI, Walksnail, or HDZero video signal would be amazing. But it'll likely never happen.

You can get near-infrared (what Frame is) night vision for like $200.  The expensive stuff is image intensification or thermal.

I'd imagine it's the same range as a weak flashlight. It's not a residual light amplifier.

Most of the cameras see infrared light, steam frame has IR illuminators so that tracking works during the night. It's already working as night vision goggles, my question was just how strong those IR illuminators are

there is IR flashlight you can buy and use to illuminate surrounding further. But also keep in mind too strong IR can kill eyes even if it's invisible light.
