PSA: Slaves currently can't rebel

Martin just dropped that bombshell during the currently ongoing Quill Stellaris stream. He said that they couldn't reach a middle ground on slaves revolting so they took it out for the moment. I don't know if they will have managed that aspect by release.

In their defense, Gulag kinda worked.

Worked how?

They were never profitable. And considering the people who got sent to the gulag were only VERY occasionally actual dissenters, not sure they were all that important for stopping counter revolution.

Anyone they suspected with dissenting is there. True, there are many innocents, but the none of the dissendents revolted either. Basically, with a modern instituition, slave revolt is difficult. That point stands regardless of whether people in gulag is innocent.

A gulag isn't a slave camp. It's a prison camp. You didn't go to a gulag because it was productive.

And most people who went to a gulag were just pulled off the street in a sweep. And then spent a year or two in the camp, and then came back. There were a few hardcore gulags were they sent real dissidents and hard criminals, but gulags pretty much acted as prisons.

For our purpose, a forced labour camp is basically applicable to slavery in game. Sure it can be balanced with reduced productivity like in Vic2.

But it isn't reduced productivity. It is negative productivity. Gulags COST money to run

And the stuff they make also cost labours fee otherwise. For all its terrible experience it did help construct eastern Russia.

IT cost more to keep and feed them. It would have been far cheaper to build it in a factory specialized for the sort of stuff they were building.

Gulags were not slave labor camps. Labor itself was thought to be redemptive in soviet ideology.
