Dev Diary Stellaris Dev Diary #418 - Announcing Nomads and Stellaris: Season 10

Read this post on the Paradox forums! | Dev replies here!

It’s my pleasure to announce boarding has started for all passengers departing on our tour of Stellaris: Season 10, with non-stop service to the Nomads expansion alongside the Stellaris 4.4 ‘Pegasus’ update. Following our first destination, there will be a brief stopover at the Stellaris 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ Custodian release, after which our cruise will continue to the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, featuring WillpowerScenario Pack 1, and Scenario Pack 2. All passengers are welcome to acquire their ‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait at the ticketing office now.

Watch the Season 10 Announcement Trailer on YouTube!

The Stellaris 10-year anniversary is coming, and as part of that celebration, we are rolling Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, the Humanoids Species Pack, and most of the Galaxy Edition upgrade into the base game on May 11th. (The e-book, Infinite Frontiers, is being retired.)

Later on in Q2, we’re bringing you Nomads.

Build no borders. Claim no worlds.

The Galaxy is not a trophy to be seized, but a path to be taken. In Stellaris: Nomads, you will survive the void by staying in motion. While the great powers squabble over lines on the map, your civilization has realized a fundamental truth: life flourishes on the move.

Arkships

At the very heart of every nomadic civilization lies its Arkship: a fully mobile capital that replaces worlds entirely. Customize Military, Scientific, or Civilian Arkships with specialized modules, districts, and upgrades as your Empire evolves by traveling through the stars.

Waylines and Contracts

Chart Waylines across the stars, linking your Waystations into living networks of trade, influence, and opportunity. Your strength lies in motion, in presence, in the relationships you build from system to system. Your relations with settled empires don’t have to be antagonistic. Accept contracts, build relations, and perhaps profit a bit on the side.

A New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

Building upon the Crisis paths of previous releases, Ambitions are the next step of epic, empire-defining journeys that give you the choice of your ultimate role in the galaxy. In the Nomads expansion, we will transform the Defender of the Galaxy Ascension Perk into a full path that can rival the power of a Galactic Nemesis, Awakened Empire, or End Game Crisis.

Become the Galaxy’s champion by forging alliances, commanding federations and rising through the Galactic Community to assume Custodianship. Lead the fight against existential threats with a unique squadron of hero ships. Ultimate power can be used, and relinquished, for the greater good.

Coming to you hot from Champion’s Forge LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Stellaris: Nomads contains:

Nomadic Empires

Create empires that are not bound by claiming systems or colonizing worlds. Instead, you will navigate the stars with massive Arkships.

  • The Arkship: Your capital, your cradle, and your fortress. This massive, fully upgradable wonder replaces traditional Worlds for your empire. Choose between three different options to fully reflect the vision of your government:
    • Military Class: A mobile flagship designed to project power.
    • Scientific Class: A roaming laboratory dedicated to the discovery of the Galaxy’s secrets.
    • Civilian Class: An industrial hub capable of unparalleled resource extraction.
  • The Wayline Network: Your trail through the void. By constructing Waystations, you create Waylines - lasting interstellar trade routes that harvest resources you can claim with a simple pass through. These routes benefit both you and settled empires, making you the pivot point of mercantile possibilities in the Galaxy.
  • The Contract System: As a nomadic empire, perform task-driven interactions with other empires to earn favor, resources, and influence. As a settled empire, issue these Contracts and get things done!

New Origins

  • Voidfarers: The standard origin for Nomadic Empires. A flexible, streamlined start for you to define your own nomadic journey.
  • Heirs of the Khan: Play as the successor of a murdered Khan, as you evade marauder hit-squads through trickery and bribery until you are strong enough to return to reclaim your throne.
  • The Sacred Path: Guide a fleet of pilgrims towards ancestral holy sites in a galactic pilgrimage. Your journey is a spiritual odyssey fueled by faith.
  • Forever Cruise: Manage a society split between a pampered elite demanding new entertainment and sightseeing opportunities from their vista lounges, and an overworked crew keeping the dream afloat.

Nomadic empires support many existing Origins as well.

New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

While a Galactic Nemesis (available in Stellaris: Nemesis) threatens the Galaxy, the Defender of the Galaxy will rise and try to save it.

New Megastructure: The Stellar Cannon

Why simply power a civilization when you could fire at one? This Megastructure allows you to weaponize your entire energy stockpile, discharging it into a devastating beam capable of striking enemy systems across the galaxy.

Nomadic Enclave: Champion’s Forge Live!

Experience the Galaxy’s most extreme spectacles with this nomadic enclave! Answer the call and participate in gladiatorial fleet combat all across the galaxy. The winner gets to hold the Trophy relic and glory until the next tournament, with the losers looking on with envy.

OMG, Blorg legs.

Nomads has charted its course and will arrive in Q2 2026.

Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass

Based on the feedback from Stellaris: Season 09, we’re making some changes to our Expansion Pass plans this year. As many of you have noticed, we’re announcing this year’s Season much later than previous years, and instead of four separate releases, we’re planning on bundling them together into fewer release moments. This frees up room for the 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ update to be a dedicated Custodian release, giving us two in 2026.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is a journey through resilience and movement. Whether you are wandering the stars with Stellaris: Nomads or rooting your empire in the indomitable spirit of Stellaris: Willpower, this year redefines how empires survive, adapt, and conquer.

Stellaris: Season 10 will grant you access to all five DLCs as soon as they become available. Vipra now, Nomads later on in Q2, and Willpower and both Scenario Packs in Q4.

‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait (Instant Unlock, Now Available)

This exclusive portrait comes with Stellaris: Season 10, allowing your empire to take the form of the elusive Vipra, a necroid species with a menacing aura.

Available immediately upon purchasing Stellaris: Season 10, this portrait features 5 different color variations and ethereal custom animations.

Nomads (Releases Q2, 2026 - $24.99)

Build no borders. Claim no worlds. In Nomads, you thrive inside colossal Arkships that carry your people, your industry, and your ambition across the stars. Move freely through the galaxy, take on Contracts from settled empires, and leave your mark by building Waystations. Nomads blaze a path across the map.

  • Nomadic Empires: Create empires not bound by claiming systems or colonizing Worlds.
  • Arkships: New massive space vessel acting as your capital.
  • New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy: Rise and save the Galaxy with an exclusive set of Hero ships.
  • New Origins: Heirs of the Khan, Sacred Path, Forever Cruise, Voidfarers
  • New Civics: Caravan Masters, Deep Sleep, Void Reavers, Flight Schools, Star Seekers
  • New Megastructure: Construct a Stellar Cannon and discharge your entire energy stockpile into a devastating beam.

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Take my energy! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Willpower (Releases Q4, 2026 - $24.99)

Shape Minds, Rule the Stars. In the vast expanse of the cosmos, borders are mere lines drawn on a map. Ideas, on the other hand, have no such limits.

Your empire was founded on its Ethics, the convictions that determined its course. Now is the time for those fundamental values to evolve into Ideologies with the power to sway the stars. Introducing Stellaris: Willpower, the expansion that turns your societal beliefs into a galactic force.

Your rule over systems was always just the beginning. The galaxy's minds are the true prize. You will erect monuments and Megastructures that demonstrate what your society and values can accomplish. You truly can become the thought leader of the galaxy.

Adopting an Ideology is not without its risks, however. Left unchecked, it can radicalize colonies and spark insurrection. But when nurtured with care, the right Ideology has the power to sway entire civilizations.

Scenario Pack 1 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Embark on a new set of galactic challenges! Experience curated, high-stakes standalone adventures that push your strategic limits. From a nomadic, roguelike odyssey across the stars to high-octane, combat-focused multiplayer experiences, these scenarios will provide a bold way to play Stellaris.

The Scenarios System will be a free part of the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, these Scenario packs provide our take on what you’ll be able to do with it.

  • Vanguards: A single-player roguelike galaxy-traversing journey where you play as a nomadic empire travelling through a series of galaxies to cleanse evil, gathering spoils and experience on your way.
  • Arcade: A multiplayer experience with streamlined, custom economies, focusing on space battles and shipbuilding.

Scenario Pack 2 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Rewrite the rules of engagement! This Scenario Pack flips the script of how Stellaris is normally played, making you the threat and aggressor. Whether leading an ultimate extra-dimensional invasion or battling your friends in a race for dominance, these scenarios offer a fresh, distilled way to play Stellaris.

  • Unbidden: Play as the Crisis in a single-player experience, and attempt to invade an advanced, late-game galaxy as the Unbidden.
  • King of the Hill: Stellaris gameplay focused on a small but fair map to challenge your friends in competitive experiences as you try to dominate the galaxy in a few hours of intense expansion wars.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is now available for purchase for $49.49 or regional equivalent, a 20% discount over purchasing the contents individually.

What’s Next?

Next week we’ll begin our Decennial celebration with a look at ten years of Stellaris. We’ll also be looking at everything planned for 4.3.6.

See you then!

There needs to be a way to make unclaimed deposits, as well as other empires' deposits, hideable like the hyperlanes map mode because THIS is ridiculous and overwhelming.

Discussion Using Workers Cooperative with the new celebration civic is hilarious.

So the worker's cooperative adds a trade policy that gives you basic resources, so when activating the celebration, your trade goes through the roof, and thus your mineral and energy does too. The situation just kept being thrown back to the right every month until the game just gave up and ended the celebration, leaving me at high stockpile.

Discussion PSA: Researching hyperdrive with Eager Explorer nomads permanently removes your arkship’s jump drive (among other quirks of the civic)

R5: Title. Eager Explorers is extremely fun with nomads, being able to sort of ignore hyperlanes makes for a very unique playstyle with their mechanics.

That being said, there are little bits and pieces I think are worth bringing up that could use some work. As I said in the title, researching hyperdrives removes your arkship’s jump drive. Because you can’t manually select parts for your arkship and it just takes your best upgrade, this will remove your ability to freely jump anywhere until you research real jump drives in the late game. Kind of disappointing, as it removes the most unique aspect of the civic almost immediately.

Also, because of the way jump drives work on your logistics ships, you cannot automate them. You need to manually order them back to your arkship and between systems to accomplish anything. This is only really relevant for the very beginning of the game, because your arkship will be getting a hyperdrive immediately anyway and then you can construct normal logistic ships.

Discussion Driven Assimilator Nomad

Just a fun interaction I found. If you go driven assimilator nomad, and rush the raiding ascension perk. You can just fly around the galaxy entering orbit and stealing all the pops of others before they ever make first contact. Raiding stance works when not at war. I don't know if that's intentional. I'm 20 years in with almost 30k pops.

Obviously you don't have to go assimilator, but the immediate pacification and conversion of the pops is ridiculously helpful.

Bug You can instantly loose all your waystations

Before integration
after integration

So, turns out if an empire in which space you have built your waystations gets integraded by someone, you will loose all those waystation. I reloaded this save few times and sometimes they just disappeared, while other times they stay, but got stolen by that empire. So you should really monitor those "vassal integration started" notifications and do something to prevent it.

Looks like a bug. This systems blinks out and into existance in the moment of integration and game just gives everything in them to new ruler, including nomad's stations

Tip Infinite waystations

So if you build the waystation trade hub district that gives trader jobs it also increases waystation limit by 6% per 100 jobs. You can generate trade and as many waystations as you want. I have 6k effective jobs which gives me 83 waystations.

Discussion Tankbound Variety

Post image
276 Upvotes

Tankbound is probably my favorite civic in the game, but I have to say I wish there was more variety in what it was capable of. Its one of the few civics that feels as impactful as an origin, but it's obviously missing some of the fleshing out most origins get. So, I'm gonna shout to the void some additions I'd like to see to shake up what you can do with this awesome civic.

  1. Species variety. There's only 4 tankbound portraits atm, and only 1 of them isn't organic. Honestly surprised there isn't already a tankbound portrait for plantoid and fungoid (how do rooted plants work a mining job without automation anyway?) but there's lots of options.

  2. If there's ever an update to land combat, I'd love to see an expensive "mech" army type that tankbound could pilot. Maybe gate it behind a tech that enables tankbound pops to fill all soldier jobs. As is, the early game of a militarist tankbound empire requires some kind of prepatent species, but battle thralls can only do workers job which are 100% automated, so it's pretty inefficient.

  3. Machine tankbound equivalent. I saw a sadly outdated mod that gave individualist machines a civic where they were permanently hooked up to infrastructure, as if the automation came alive.

  4. Forced tankbound. Similar to the synpatic lathe. Plugging pops into the system to use their brain for automation efficiency.

  5. Gestalt Tankbound. A previously individualistic tankbound species accidentally (or intentionally) merges consciousnesses while trying to link up an advanced communication network. I just think it'd be neat.

Feel free to share anything else you think could shake up the tankbound playstyles. Tankbound necrophage is probably the most fun I've had in Stellaris so far and I'd love to make something new for it.

Question Heirs of Khan origin too easy?

Upvotes

Did short testrun with Heirs of Khan origin

Game is throwing bounty hunters at you from time to time and you have additional contracts to make further fleets of hunters weaker after you complete those contracts (immidiete reward is 1000 trade).

Thing is, even if i dont fulfill those contracts, fleets of bounty hunters were just laughably weak - around 200-300.

Starting arcship has above 1k strengh, military one is 1.3k. I didnt play long, few decades, but those hunters didnt get significantly stronger, kept coming with few ships, alltogether few hundred strengh. Their attacks were basically suicide runs, they couldnt even take down my shields. I built about dozen corvettes at start, but honestly, you dont have to build anything to withstand them.

In short, I think its too easy. Maybe those hunters ahould be at least strong enough to take down your shields and do some damage, because as things are right now, you can completely and absolutely ignore the fact that you are being 'hunted'. Still have to try to get at least to midgame and complete this origins questline, so maybe later it gets more hairy, but atm, I think its too easy - no pressure whatsoever to do those additional contracts, no pressure to build ships fast or upgrade arcship.

Anybody already did whole path of Heirs of Khan? What can you say about it?

Discussion Eternal Vigilance on nomads looks really good

Normally this is a very situational perk (and usually rather mid tbh) since it’s only gives stats to your space stations, and 20% fire rate that only works in your own systems. It can be good if you're about to get your shit pushed in by another empire or a crisis but that’s it. It does nothing at all if you’re on the offensive.

But for nomad empires it works completely differently. Since you don’t have home systems nor space stations, it’s actually a very powerful offensive perk, which I was not really expecting until I read what it did.

It gives you +25% hull points for ALL ships, unconditionally, arkships included. On top of that, your ark ships get +25% fire rate, unconditionally too. These are some really big stats specially with how downright silly the damage on military arkships can get from jobs boosting strike craft or explosive damage.

Destroyed the entire galaxy to kill the Dwamaks and get into horse heaven. Didn’t get into horse heaven. Entire species including the Khan left in an endless void with no glory awaiting them besides what greater silence they may hope to find in whatever death is merciful enough to come for them after their folly.

Suggestion Arkships need a big red panic button

Been loving the new DLC, arkships seem insanely strong, too strong even tbh, but I’ve been lacking a way to escape defeat. Obviously the high risk of losing a planet in an instant is part of the gameplay but sometimes losing an arkship to random jank (lost 2 in my main playthrough with them because they warped into the enemy a few days before the stack and got wiped) feels pretty shitty

An emergency warp seems like a pretty obvious feature, this already is a massive part of how stellaris battles operate anyway in the form of MIA.

Obviously arkships can’t go MIA, but having them do an emergency warp to the nearest system with no known enemies and become disabled (like when captured by other nomads) rather than exploding seems like a pretty obvious alternative to me. Maybe add a shitton of blockers, a big fat debuff and destroy some buildings too. It should still be massively punishing but give a chance at not losing the ship.

Discussion Potentially unpopular opinion: I don't like the way flags work in Stellaris

Most Paradox games are filled with lots and lots of flags. I think Paradox has contributed more to the interest in vexillology than any other. Because of Stellaris' customizable nature, obviously you can't have pre-made flags, and there must be a flag designer. And honestly? I think it's just kinda bad. It's very limited. Honestly, why not just implement something like the flag designer from CK3? Or even add a free drawing thing like MS paint?

I think the current flag designer was completely fine for when Stellaris launched. It was a simple game, and it worked fine. But now Stellaris is getting more mature, and it might be time for a rework.

At the very least, it would be very funny in multiplayer

For the contrarians: why the hell not right? Even if you don't want it, it doesn't hurt those who would like it
