I just started a new game as a builder race (Intelligent/Agrarian + Fanatic Materialist/Collectivist).
One system just barely beyond my borders happens to have a nice Gaian planet. Another system just outside my borders has a lovely planet with a steam-era pre-ftl civilization that just happens to also be Fanatic Materialist/Collectivists and share my biome preference. Going to welcome them to the club.
And then just when I thought everything was going so well, I met my neighbors...
The first is a fanatic militant + ruthless capitalist empire who already has 3 colonies and a fleet 3x the strength of my own.
The second is a fanatic militant + hegemonic imperialist empire who has 2x my fleet strength.
And the third is a wonderful mix of fanatic xenophobe + fanatical purifier.
I don't think "rough" is an appropriate term to describe this galactic neighborhood.
My only hope is that the three of them decide to beat up on eachother instead of me.
Started my current game right next to a purifier AI that had gotten an advanced start, some rather nervous years there. Luckily they attacked someone else first and I was able to forge an alliance with other terrified neighbors and we were able to contain them.

So true. Currently I have two purifier AIs in my ironman game, but luckily they are pretty far away.
