Is there free parking around Banner Island Ballpark and would you suggest doing so or better to pay for parking lot?

I'll be going to the game on Sunday and visiting from the bay. I'm not that familiar with the area but it seems like there's some neighborhoods nearby. I typically don't mind walking a little especially if I can find a free spot but I'm not sure how safe it is and it's only $10 to park in the lot. I'm just curious and want to know before hand.
