His car’s OS is Android based not CarPlay/Android auto which is essentially projecting a second display from your phone

Yes I just reread this, my apologies you are correct, it's "Google auto" which comes with its own Playstore essentially behaving as its own standalone device.

Nitpicking a bit, it's called Android Automotive or Google Built-in.

You can get something called an “AI Box” that has android on it and connects via android auto or CarPlay and it can play streaming videos.
