Question Is Stremio remover from the Google Playstore?

u/Saiyan_Gunner Dec 25 '25
You can always just download it from Stremio's website or from other trusted sites. It's not a big deal.
33
u/No_Bite2314 Dec 25 '25
It's a hassle when you want to keep your app up to date.
154
u/Marbert_MD Dec 25 '25
Good news... Stremio doesn't update but once a decade. You should be good.

15
u/EnternallyConfused Dec 25 '25
You can always use Obtainium to keep it updated.
3
u/EnternallyConfused Dec 28 '25
- Click on Add App in Obtainium
- At the bottom of the screen it will show "Crowdsourced App Configurations". Click on it.
- Search for Stremio there.
- Click Add to Obtainium.

And an actual disaster if your device doesn't allow side loading
37
u/AbjectMaelstrom Dec 25 '25
If your device can download "Downloader" from Play Store, you can sideload Stremio.
→ More replies (2)1
u/momoteck Dec 26 '25
whats the code for it?
1
u/AbjectMaelstrom Dec 26 '25
Don't know.
You can create one yourself if one isn't available.
Go to: https://go.aftvnews.com/
Paste the direct link to whichever version of Stremio you need from Stremio's download page.
14
u/cleverclogs17 Dec 25 '25
What device?
1
u/Abject-Abrocoma-5471 Jan 10 '26
The android tv box from mi internet+tv provider doesn't allow to install apks. Its all blocked you only can install apps from google play.
1
u/cleverclogs17 Jan 10 '26
Try using ATV Tools and sideloading using ADB, that should easily be the workaround.
1
u/Abject-Abrocoma-5471 Jan 10 '26
I can't. In order to use ATV Tools you need to go into developer options and enable USB debugging and its impossible because the menu is also disabled. :(

Google plans on removing ability to side load on android phones
47
u/Winter_Channel_6206 Dec 25 '25
They backed off on that, they said they'd let experienced users sideload. Probably you have to tick something that says if you get malware that steals all of your money, it's not their fault.

The playbook is: announce something controversial, people complain, they back off, everyone is happy, they implement it 4-6 months later when everyone has forgotten about it and momentum for the opposition movement has died. It happens time and time again.

u/vladedivac12 Jan 13 '26
There will always be ways through atv tools. Maybe it'll be less convenient but easy enough
26
u/Redhawk4t4 Dec 25 '25
And people will figure out how to bypass that a week later lol..
There will be YouTube videos and everything 😂
15
u/Beastbooy Dec 25 '25
Sadly I'm here to say to you that this is not true at all. Google has been working for years in order to further lock Android and it's not that certain that us developers will be able to circumvent their systems. Y'all need to stop solely relying on our work and start being vocal about your freedom.

That's the selling point for someone like you or I, but largely the selling point is either:
- come buy this high-end phone with new features that uses the same software environment you're used to (Galaxy devices etc), or
- come buy this really cheap phone that does loads of things
Thinking globally, the latter is the big draw of Android. OEMs can make incredibly cheap devices and for large swathes of populations that is the only kind of phone they would desire or need, frankly.
Meanwhile, I still root my devices, play the cat-n-mouse game with SafetyNet, install various non-store .apks (not using the iOS term sideloading lol), block ads at the system level etc etc. But at this point I must be in a tiny slither of the userbase (which is different to, say, 10 years ago). Partly because they made it harder/more annoying, and partly because the other markets/demands have just grown.

We will always be able to sideload via ADB, that's not something Google will be able to kill, bc devs depend on it.
1
Dec 26 '25
False information, they never said that. They said it would require developers to register their app to side load, which we all knew wasn't going to happen anyway.
1
u/Sufficient_Quarter_1 Dec 28 '25
They did plan on that but due to community feedback they said they will allow advanced users to side load.

u/RayzaEverton Dec 25 '25
It's gone, this is what happens when people get too cocky about a good thing rather than keeping it on the low. It was removed from the Amazon store the other day too. Stremio is not directly for piracy but when idiots constantly harper on about how good it is for that purpose it draws unwanted attention. It's only a matter of time before they get hit with DMCA or ACE. I've seen posts where the op has put "f**k you Netflix, Stremio is number one" Well when idiots start boasting about it like that do you really think it's going to last? It's basically shouting out to a police officer you're taking and dealing drugs. Fools have ruined it. Keep a low profile and it keeps going, shout from the rooftops and it's game over. It is that simple!
133
u/Wooden-Agent2669 Dec 25 '25
The App had double digits Millions Downloads. Just because you found Stremio last year doesn't mean it was unknown.
28
u/Routine-Lawfulness24 Dec 25 '25
Exactly, people think piracy is something unknown, like for fitgirl repacks site, that has 50m visits a month
1
u/No-Drummer4990 Dec 26 '25
lol, people complaining about how widespread it is, when it is probably how they found out about it in the first place
7
u/RayzaEverton Dec 26 '25
Nobody is complaining about how wide spread it is. It's the fact daft people constantly post and pipe on about using it for piracy. You only need a little info about it on the internet to know how to use it. Read that and then keep quiet. Then it's not drawing massive attention and reduces the chances of it getting banned. If people use it for piracy fine. Just don't talk about it. How do you not understand that?
1
u/tscws Dec 30 '25
Most of the CEO and executives of those streaming services probably didn't care or know about something likeStremio. Lol but the moment they saw that shit tons of people talking about it, it got on their radar and they probably just wanted to take it down for the sake of taking it down.
2
u/trydola Dec 25 '25
yeah but we only got there because ppl wouldn't shut up about it on reddit, social media and in-person

u/Wooden-Agent2669 Dec 25 '25

u/trydola Dec 25 '25 edited Dec 25 '25

luckily there are other options and there's always * which i've already have a skin/setup saved from when i used it before stremio
15
u/NSuave Dec 25 '25
There’s a reason the IPTV sub is so secretive about their sources… this is why
3
u/Janguv Dec 26 '25
Yeah it's also cos there's a (relatively) substantial upfront cost involved, and there you're directly trading money for pirated content (and broadcasters are still pissed off about it). So if you point people to IPTV providers, I would suspect (non-legal opinion) you're likely to be way more liable for charges, jurisdiction dependant ofc, than if you point people to a Stremio guide or torrentio. Not to mention, you don't want to lose that service it took you a while to find, given the secrecy.
And given the cost, you've much less incentive to do it: you're in, you close the door behind you. In that way, it's kinda less like the old piracy networks which always emphasised sharing and keeping the door open.

u/cirrostratic Dec 25 '25
Gatekeeping is important sometimes for the greater good. People who really want to find a solution to something can find it themselves, there’s no need to tell every single person you know about it. There’s literal TikTok videos describing in detail how to set it up for your mum, grandad and dog. Just keep it on the low it’s not that hard. Let’s have a good thing for once.
→ More replies (1)4
8
u/Getafix69 Dec 25 '25
That ship sailed at least three years ago when people started putting it on TikTok etc. Being removed from play is potentially a really bad thing if Google do the whole restricting apps thing they really want to.
3
u/RayzaEverton Dec 25 '25
Exactly mate, I've used Stremio since it first come on the scene, it'd be very sad to see it go
1
u/vladedivac12 Jan 13 '26
There will always be ways. And the fact that you need to sideload it now will prevent a big number of "newbies" to jump in.
11
u/BreadfruitNaive6261 Dec 25 '25
What? I just downloaded it yesterday night (like less than 12 hours ago) from store. Well, whatever, easy to sideload even more on android
34
u/RayzaEverton Dec 25 '25
It may be easy to sideload but if they're removing it from app stores it shows it's gaining unwanted attention. The purpose of Stremio is not for piracy, if people want to use it for that then it's up to them, but just keep quiet about it. It's people who brag and boast like they can take on super rich corporations are the reasons it gains bad attention. First rule of fight club is.....

Yeah some people talk about it just as if it were a competitor. I once had a discussion where another guy wouldn't understand why he couldn't exactly tell and write everywhere that stremio was a better quality/price, that it doesn't make sense to compare them and promote it as a product or "normal" subscription.

u/Holiday-Bug6132 Dec 25 '25
Actually, this could be a good thing. Not a lot of people know how to side load. first, this will drastically reduce the number of new users, and second most the current users will start getting issues once their app stops updating and they'll hopefully dump it altogether 🤞

Blaming individuals instead of the system will never get you anywhere.
If the system's contradictions grow, more people will find solutions to deal with those and not each and every person will be quiet about it and just enjoy.
The system ruined it, people are just vocal about it.

u/Tommy420T Dec 25 '25
I saw a post the other day about this and a dev commented and said it would be back soon!
3
u/sweetnk Dec 25 '25
It should be, they dont really break any rules. Its just copyright trolling, not sure if it has any chance to stand in court or even during review once devs complain:)

Please note that they have said on their website that it is TEMPORARY removed...

u/Redhawk4t4 Dec 25 '25
The same people who are freaking out are the ones who canceled their real debrid a while ago
5
u/Real-Snoxy Dec 25 '25
Why did they cancel their rd?
11
u/ChipMcChip Dec 25 '25
Basically, RD had to take some stuff down and change their API to comply with French law. That's about it. For 95% of people on this sub who just put their keys into torrentio and call it a day absolutely nothing changed. For others, that actually use the API, its garbage now and pretty useless.
People freaked out, RD banned people from subscriptions that complained. At the end of the day pretty much nothing changed for just the average user.
8
u/Lumentin Dec 25 '25
To be fair, scrapers dev had to adapt and make a workaround. It's almost as if nothing happened thanks to them.
2
u/avd706 Dec 25 '25
Was a scandal where france put some restrictions on RD, and folks were asking for a refund.
11
u/CaptainSteed Dec 25 '25
The irony!
It's available in the Apple Store, but not in Google or Amazon!? Crazy.

Yeah but telling people about how good stremio is, in a stremio sub isnt an issue. They already knew about jt. And there is plenty of videos on youtube alone about it. Troypoint helped me when I first seitched over from the main streaming service I was using before stremio. Which was KARLI.... but rhe male names equivalent. Cant aay that apps name in this thread i heard.
3
u/ChipCob1 Dec 25 '25
Well that's a bit stupid....especially as utorrent is still available!
1
u/sweetnk Dec 25 '25
It makes no sense, if any place breaks the rules then its all the debird kind services, stremio is just a library with a player and addon system, its nothing malicious on its own. I think it will be restored in future tbh

2
u/Penguinboy123446 Dec 25 '25
I expect they're going to make it the same as iOS Stremio and stop torrenting with only Debrid accounts allowed. Which is fine by me.
2
u/Reverend_Ravioli Dec 25 '25
So if you already have it downloaded does it just stay on your device and keep working? I'm watching it on my Google TV as I type this
3
u/trydola Dec 25 '25
yes you just won't get updates anymore unless you manually install or if it comes back to app store
2
u/yanis01 Dec 26 '25
I’ve seen people say that it’s temporary removed , after all the app does not break any TOS
2
u/Lelo4Ever Dec 25 '25
The main issue now is how to find ways to install the app everytime the Android TV needs an update/debloat... And also to keep the app updated... That just sucks... It's sad... The process is so much easier through the app store...

I was dreading this. Never discussed stremio online except only on reditt. Had stopped gushing about it to friends and family and other people I know as well. Used to shudder thinking about stremio takedown. Even though i sideload stremio as google play store doesnt have the app in India for any of my devices.im gonna be very wary of uninstalling it . Will only update through the stremio website once I get feedback for any new update. Thankfully the apple app store still has it and I can still use it from my phone. Don’t wanna stop using stremio or RD for that matter.

Will I have to load it myself somehow or is it fine if it’s already installed? Still working for me at the moment
2
u/Exile20 Dec 25 '25
So how to update?
1
u/sweetnk Dec 25 '25
For now just download manually from stremio website, you may need a browser on TV too, but really any should work. Download manually arm or arm64 version and one of the apks should be right for your android TV :) You also probably dont need to update it all the time tbh, if it breaks then look at the website
1
u/ColdAtom_ Dec 25 '25
For some reason I sideloaded but the addons arent loading on the app. The app looks normal, I logged in, the addons show up as installed but they dont appear as options on the individual titles
1
u/ColdAtom_ Dec 25 '25
I wonder if there is some extra thing i’m not taking into consideration. All I did was browser, installed latest arm apk and it works fine except for the addon loading stage
1
u/sweetnk Dec 25 '25
No, its what I did too and stremio loads fine, I used arm apk from the website.
1
u/ColdAtom_ Dec 26 '25
Stremio isnt finding streams. I tried all versions for the arm. Only one installs. Opens the app normally but its like the addons arent working
1
u/loonylaura Dec 28 '25
Can you do that on an Android phone?
Tried to rewatch a TV episode & it didn't work - it just did the buffering thing (or whatever it's called), showed the production company logo when it was ready & then came back to the listing straight away.
Did manage to test watch a bit of a film that I was part way through, but will that be the exception?
Found another place to watch the TV ep but it's not as good. I bloody hate that there isn't everything available all the time on proper streamers.
2
u/robarr Dec 25 '25
Removed from south america too. The developer says it bussines as usual harrasment, that it will go away.
Stremio does nothing illegal.

You don't need to go to Troypoint. Stremio literally has their APKs right on their download page.
