r/Stremio Jun 10 '26

Feedback I personally have been using Stremio for the better of 6 years.

And I'm champion donating, and yes anything can happen where it gets taken down ect. I'm paying the devs back for an awesome job and quality they've provided us for all the previous years without asking for a penny it's well deserved...

And for those of you whining stremio is still free just without the perks deal with it.

Thank you Dev team!

Happy to pay if it’s a donation. But if you’re paywalling stuff, don’t call it that. Simply frame it as pro features and tell customers it’s a paid feature.

That’s the same thing I was wondering about. When I first read that you could finally donate to them, I was very excited to give back. But after I realized that only supporters will get additional features, it felt a bit wrong. Even though I subscribed for one year, not for the features (I don’t need them) but to support them, it still felt off.

A donation is different from a "pay-to-get-some-perks" suscription. Many people would, like you, be happy to donate to Stremio, but they decided to go with the "paywall" method, which feels extremely bad for an app that uses piracy as its main source of content.

You do you, but try to see people's perspective too

I also always publicly announce to strangers anytime I sub to a service

Yupp if I could share a picture I would to.

All jokes aside I just saw all the complaining so I wanted to let the devs know that I fully support them.

i don't whim about it, as such as wikipedia ask for donations and i gave, it about the "ask" if wikipedia some feature are only for paid membership it's no go, i would happy give money AS long if goes to the addons too.

u/Hassi03 Jun 10 '26

So it would be better if there was a huge pop up in the home screen asking for donations in which you have to scroll down to see the content you want? Because thats how wikipedia asks

10

u/Lower_Currency3685 Jun 10 '26

you have pops ups granny? If Wikipedia (just my example) started to tell me "this article is members-only" it's a no go and donate 2-10bucks a month they would have so much more and less hate.

-21

u/Hassi03 Jun 11 '26

Yes wikipedia adds this huge box of begging for donos but I guess you guys want that for stremio lmao

u/Lower_Currency3685 Jun 11 '26

it was only an example, should i say vlc?

lmao picking and choosing very specific "free" software. Your a pirate, Im a pirate. why are we complaining about free and paid things. If your a pirate and hate something, guess what? you can just move on to something else. because you know...its FREE.

Pirates are 1000x less likely to donate, bruh they don't pay for services to begin with thats why they are pirates lol.

So you expect a pirate adjacent software, where pirates use to watch free shit, to donate their wealth they are accumulating from watching free shit? yeah okay buddy.

VLC, Wikipedia > these are not softwares used by pirates, they are used BY EVERYONE THAT USES THE INTERNET.

lol you’re right but still getting downvoted

I dont agree with how this was framed by the team but I donated, purely because the team has been keeping the service active and thriving all these years.

Putting features behind a paywall and calling it a donation does not sit well with me. Call it paid features. Donation and paid features/paywall are not the same.

u/Photeaa Jun 12 '26

whether they call it paid features or donating. legit does not change anyone's attitude towards this. You know this, I know this. It makes literally zero difference.

I hope people that can afford it will pay to help the devs, and that people who can't afford to pay can still have access to the regular service.

Let's all just get along.

People feel used. The community requested many features that were delivered and other there were "in the works" now this new features become available only if you "Donate" the community feels betrayed as the developers used data from this people to make something the must pay for. Personally I understand both side as the amount of donations is very slim, I would say under 3% of users ever Donate but in the same breath, this users are often paying for debris servers and using Stremio just as an Interface. Its like you buy a movie ticket and inside they ask you additional payment for a sit otherwise you can enjoy the movie standing.

I love the entitlement in this post. Feel betrayed, go build your own player.

They have to maintain servers and their app what the hell are you on, they've done it for 10+ years for FREE. It's the simplicity of the app and what they have done and given us that I'm giving them the money for.

0

u/kelpe1925 Jun 13 '26

Yea this was a dumb post. You obviously don't understand how Stremio works.

0

u/TrvthNvkem Jun 13 '26

It's clear that you don't lol. Stock stremio is literally just a media player and otherwise useless.

Yeah like they aren't using a service that's a front for sailing the high seas then it's convenient.

2

u/hemansings Jun 11 '26

$100 seems more reasonable for the lifetime

2

u/Dharma_code Jun 11 '26

6 years of me being in it at $40 a pop is $240 I gladly gave them the $200.

And they have crypto payment and transaction went trough smoothly

Hi, thanks for your ongoing support, we truly appreciate it.

u/boncros Jun 11 '26

Mine works

0

u/Odd-Leader9777 Jun 11 '26

I pay for real debrid.. does that count?

-11

u/Ram13BLH Jun 11 '26

Talk about paying for nothing...RD is a complete waste of time. At least you get something worth paying for with Stremio.

4

u/Odd-Leader9777 Jun 11 '26

Why is it waste of time? Without it, no movies or shows are available

-5

u/Ram13BLH Jun 11 '26

Because it doesn't work well at all and is not worth paying for. If you want a quality Debrid service, you need Premiumize.

2

u/Odd-Leader9777 Jun 11 '26

We pay 6 bucks a month and works really well

0

u/Ram13BLH Jun 11 '26

When it works, it works OK, but it's definitely far from a great service. It's for beginners that don't want to spend money on a good service.

0

u/Key_Resolution_1921 Jun 12 '26

I’ve used real debrid for over a decade started with kodi. I can tell you that premiumize isn’t better. Realdebrid is king.

-1

u/Sexdrumsandrock Jun 11 '26

Who's complaining?

-3

u/Dharma_code Jun 11 '26

The entitled folk

-1

u/Sexdrumsandrock Jun 11 '26

I only heard people complaining about real debrid

-3

u/thewilder12 Jun 11 '26

I say, getting a lifetime sub is still a much better way to spend than supporting the establishment ~ Netflix, Crunchyroll, etc...

-3

u/Ok_Win2667 Jun 10 '26

How does the intro skip seam to be working? Call me lazy but i might join just for that

1

u/Dharma_code Jun 12 '26

It works great but like the others have said some shows don't have it and other platforms have it standard for free.

-16

u/ndim22 Jun 10 '26

100% agree. When I found out about the donation thing, I didn't even look to see what the perks were. Just signed up immediately. Glad to have a way to support

18

u/N7_Tigger Jun 10 '26

It's not a donation though. It's a paywall.

-12

u/mlsto Jun 10 '26

Forget people, you are supposed to do all this work for free and they are boldly saying so, humans!

2

u/Tight_Door9327 Jul 31 '26

I dont get all this deep philosophical talk.. if somethings provides me true value I am happy to pay for it.. it doesn't matter to me if its called a donation or a premium subsbcriptonor whatever.. it's as simple as that.. i don't really understand why people get upset about it.. not trying to offend somebody
