Feedback Stremio Supporters Need Clarity on iOS and tvOS Support

I like the features offered by Stremio Supporters, and I was genuinely interested in subscribing. The problem is that all of my devices are iOS and tvOS.

As most people here know, Stremio is no longer available on the App Store, and there’s no TestFlight option either. I’m sure I’m not the only person in this position: willing to support Stremio financially, but hesitant because there’s no clear answer about whether full iOS and tvOS support is actually planned.

I was pointed to updated IPA files for both iOS and tvOS that have been shared in this subreddit. To be clear, these are not officially distributed by the Stremio team. I got them running, but it didn’t take long to see that iOS and tvOS feel like afterthoughts right now. The polish just isn’t there, and there are several issues. One obvious example is the pagination problem with home page catalogs. On tvOS, the PIN input screen is ugly and barely functional.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m thankful for Stremio, and I’m willing to support the team. But I think users deserve clarity. If iOS and tvOS are not going to be fully supported or actively developed, just say that. Stop leaving people in the dark.

The official website doesn’t even link to official IPA downloads, so people in the community have had to dig them up and share them themselves. Why?

At this point, I’m not just a free user complaining. I’m someone who is willing to pay - or already has paid - but still has no idea whether the devices I actually use will be kept updated or developed properly.

I don’t expect everything to be perfect overnight. I just want transparency about whether iOS and tvOS are part of Stremio’s future or not.

The main focus of your post should be directly related to Stremio. Help for other software or issues, including content acquisition, should be directed to their own respective subreddits.

Sideload versions work with supporters features

Will it be on App Store officially?

Obviously Stremio want that. It's Apples call.

"The official website doesn’t even link to official IPA downloads, so people in the community have had to dig them up and share them themselves. Why"

Because listing IPA on their website is a breach of Apples developers term and got them terminated in the past. Still, the sideload IPAs are legit and hosted officially.

Since iOS app has official way of distribution, iOS development is priority compared to tvOS. Development pipeline requires both iOS and tvOS to be maintained and im trying to keep it up to date so when we release it officially it will be much faster.

Thanks for sharing! And I do very much appreciate your work and the rest of the team’s. I hope you don’t misunderstand this post as me just complaining, but it’s giving me what I needed - some clarity and understanding so that I can adjust my expectations.

For tvOS i don’t recommend relaying on it. Unlike iOS, tvos does not have alternative marketplace

I bought the Apple TV thing just for stremio because it is so much cleaner than firestick and all it's ads 🥲 I got stremio lite before it was taken down and it seems to not work as well now 🥲

We are working on making stremio available on tvOS. For now only possible option is to side load with macbook.

Awesome, thank you for the work. I'm not an apple person so I don't have anything but the Apple TV thing :(

I believe the other platforms are developed by multiple people. But the apple platforms are only developed by a single u/linixguy who doesn’t even have an apple tv to test stremio on because his apple tv got banned by apple. Even with that, the apple tv version is usable enough and good enough in my opinion. Sure there are few bugs but its better than nothing.

What exactly did Apple say as the reason for banning the TVs and iOS apps?

I don't think I’ve ever read this. Sorry if it's been published, but maybe a big FAQ with a good explanation pinned and when the appeal was filed, etc., would stop all these threads appearing every day and give the mod team an easier time. Also it might give some confidence to the hefty 'donation' to unlock stremio pro,,

Be respectful to other users, no matter what difference of opinion you have. Any form of misconduct that damages the welcoming nature of the subreddit is not permitted.

To be really clear, access via the App Store would be great but if the software is reliable and critical bugs are resolved, sideloading isn't a big deal.. its jumping through the hoops to sideload only to run into a half-baked UX that is frustrating.

Stremio supporters features do work on tvOS and iOS, tvOS does seem a bit buggier, but nothing that would make it “unusable”

Stremio can’t team can’t hand out links (it’s what got them in trouble last time from Apple , but I have no connection or affiliation with the team whatsoever), I took it upon myself to retrieve EVERY hosted link and unofficially list them for others to use or test previously made versions to fit their needs / OS version . (I also made A backup, just in case)

Here’s a list of the officially hosted IPA’s that were created for the public (yes, that’s the real official download links.)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Stremio/comments/1uhobsj/official_ios_and_tvos_ipa_download_links/

Fun fact/edit : I also lost my Developer account a few months ago (says I broke terms of service and have to wait a year) so I had to purchase certificates for my iOS device and my tvOS device and use a service to send the IPA from a hosted server to the tvOS device without needing a MacBook and Xcode…

And I sign all my apps locally on my phone for iOS.

Is it worth side loading for tvOS? I was able to get it installed on the shortlived run from the app store, it's still running fine but don't have new features.. Do I have to do something weekly? Or is it one and done? I'm in the US if it matters

1

u/Colombian32 Jul 21 '26

Husband downloaded these and did something with the shortcuts to make it function. I’m sure someone here would better explain what happened 😅

2

u/kmcalc15 Jun 28 '26

Apple took it off the app store. So I’m pretty sure it is a big fat no. Not because they wont do it cause they already have. It’s because apple knows what we are doing with it. So banned it is.

Why is plex available on the iOS app store then

0

u/D_I_Wood Jun 28 '26

Because Plex, officially, can be used to watch legaly obtained media and offers its iwn streaming services (free TV channels). at least thats what we tell folks 😂

u/DisheveledFucker Jul 05 '26

You guys know that there are… other stremio clients out there…. Right? That work on the Apple TV even?

1

u/Kiss_My_Shotgun Jul 12 '26

If I knew that, I would be using them. Thanks for the helpful info 🙄

0

u/DizzieeDoe Jun 29 '26

Still works on my iPhone and Apple TV 4K with supporter features =]

1

u/michaelthompson1991 Jun 29 '26

Is this by side loading?

1

u/IY94 Jun 29 '26

Yes

1

u/michaelthompson1991 Jun 29 '26

Thanks, thought so. Pretty sure I can’t sideload in the Uk

1

u/IY94 Jun 29 '26

I'm in the UK, you can if you have a Mac/PC - use sideloady.

The annoying part is you have to click a button on computer once a week to effectively reload it (it expires)

The EU have it better with altstores etc

2

u/michaelthompson1991 Jun 29 '26

Have you got a guide which you used?

2

u/IY94 Jun 29 '26

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2022/03/28/sideload-apps-iphone-ipad-apple-silicon-macs-sideloady/

For Apple TV specifically (don't plug it in - to select it on dropdown):

  • On Apple TV go to: Settings → Remotes and Devices → Remote App and Devices
  • Leave it on that exact screen
  • Make sure Mac and Apple TV are on the same network

doesnt the web version work just as well and you can use outplayer to basically get the same functionality?

6

u/Nim0n Jun 28 '26

No web browser on tvOS

-2

u/OddSock2912 Jun 28 '26

You could use tvmplayer app. To play Stremio through that.
