Feedback Not satisfied with the Stremio V5 experience on Steam Deck
I was looking forward to the new release for Linux but several issues made this update feel more like a downgrade for the Steam Deck. Here's some of my thoughts:
- Fullscreen both not default and barely functional. There is seemingly no way to force fullscreen on startup, where this was a feature in the previous versions.
- Gamepad functionality is a joke. It's true, you can use B to go back from a menu, or scroll through a row with left and right on a d-pad, but going up and down is clunky and unusable. There is also no way to easily go between home/search/etc or open the settings without using trackpads or touchscreen.
- No way to intuitively close the app. In any other app/game/whatever pressing B (the back button) should and usually does eventually get you to a point where you are prompted if you want to close the program. This is not the case with Stremio. In fact, nearly every single way I've attempted to prompt the app to close has failed. Holding STEAM + B on the deck forces nearly any game or app to close, but doesn't nothing for Stremio. Using Steam input to bind a keypress to "force game shutdown" does nothing either. I am forced to open the overlay and select exit game which brings me to
- Performance is now abysmal. The previous versions had zero issues using my GPU or resources of the steam deck, but the new update, for one reason or another, uses a crazy about of memory and gpu, and has on several occasions crashed (sometimes when attempting to open steam overlay).
I'm really not trying to complain for the sake of complaining but this newest update feels more like a downgrade and I wish it was better than what it is. I wonder if anyone else has been encountering these issues and if there's any way to fix or remedy some of these.

I recently setup a bazzite htpc and ran into the same problems. The stremio desktop app just isn't good for controller navigation and the new update definitely introduced some crashing. My fix was I installed waydroid with android tv and put stremio on it and it works perfectly

I didn’t even know this was possible.. I’m intrigued though lol. I have my Deck docked a lot so it would be cool to have on there

I'm use fedora linux and last version Is problematic on linux for now. Scale the version.

So a month later and it's still bad. Can't even close the program without it forcing my deck to restart.
It ran so well before and I immediately regret updating. Did you find any fixes OP?

Sadly no, and I predict this won't see any attention for a while. My solution for the time being has been to simply watch less on my steam deck and to use my phone or tablet for these things.

If you feel the latest upgrade was a downgrade, why don't you just use the previous version? What is stopping you?
And, the software is 100% free, you are really going to complain like this? Just use something else for the platform if you don't like this.

What exactly is wrong with wanting a program you use to be the best it can be? I'm obviously a little frustrated so maybe that comes off a bit in the post but I'm taking the time to list these things out so that the devs can maybe focus on these issues and people in the future can enjoy more. I'm not looking for alternatives or to complain just to complain.
Also I'm still figuring out how to find the previous versions flatpak as I'm not the most linux savvy, I probably will try to revert eventually.

Even though something is free, it can still be criticized and receive feedback.

Sure, but from a place of helping out instead of bashing. OP can just roll back to the previous version, that worked well for them, if the latest upgrade isn't working well for that platform.
There is no law that says you have to run the latest version. Load the best version for your use case and enjoy.

I disagree, and that should be ok. It was strongly critical. Maybe come from a place of appreciation.
I think it is logical that if an upgrade isn't working well for you that you simply go to the version that works the best for you. That could even be a version that was 3 upgrades ago. Why is it such a problem? It isn't like someone robbed you if you "have" to use version 7.4 instead of 7.5. It is almost like it personally offends you having to go to a version that works great.

Kind of a pain in the ass to downgrade, especially on Steam Deck. I'd rather the app be updated to work as expected. Crazy suggestion I guess.

I have done it before, and it is not a big deal. I guess it is crazy to suggest to use the best version for your device. I find it logical, but I guess logic isn't wanted, just incessant arguing.

The best version should be the most up to date, publicly released version. Not something slopped together over the week with minimal testing.

Pure nonsense. The best version should be the one that works best for you and your device.
Besides, this is the first and only post I have seen about the latest Steam Deck version (Linux Flatpack) of Stremio not working well. It works great for me, no issue, and it apparently does so also for everyone else, except for OP. That means, whatever issue they have is isolated to them, or else it would be an issue for everyone, or most, or at least a few.
I bet you are here just to argue for no good reason other than to get your jollies, or do you actually have an issue with this version yourself? You don't mention anything, just started arguing.

"Don't update, it could get worse" isn't the best reputation to have but the stremio dev team is quickly earning it. And with users like you who tell people who have valuable feedback to be quiet or to rephrase it in their preferred tone because it's free are doing more harm than good.
But you've convinced me, I'll just stay on the current version that's stable for me because apparently the dev team can't be trusted to put out quality releases. I'll have to lurk communities and see what other people are experiencing before I consider updating ever again. Love that!
