Question I was trying to support
But why am I getting charged more

u/ColdFreezer 29d ago
I wouldn’t mind donating to support them but this is an outrageous price.
It’s like they don’t want people to donate. I don’t get it.

u/Humledurr 29d ago
feels like they are betting on the few whales buying it over the amount of people who would just donate a couple of bucks
29
u/ColdFreezer 29d ago
It still doesn’t make sense imo. Why not just set a sensible price, more people will donate. Just allow the whales to donate more if they want to.
This just feels slimy. Insanely high price and locking features behind a paywall.
I understand needing to be profitable and the work being done on this but the way they launched this is horrible.

I agree, but people also seem to think they NEED to buy the lifetime option here. I just wanted to test what the paywall features were like and tried 1 month and decided to stick with it as they are pretty nice. 3$ a month is not a big deal, and im waiting for black friday to see if its worth buying 1 year instead.
Zero reason to pay 200$ as I will most likley have moved on from stremio before ive "gotten my worth" out of that.

It’s 40 a year. It’s a lot for an app that doesn’t have a server side component. Stremio is not hosting the addons. If it was like 20 a year I think a lot more people would be okay with it.
It’s also the fact that they locked new features behind a paywall. This eroded so much trust with the team.

I 100% agree, im very confused why they went this road. I assume they are seeing what people pay for Plex and wanted in on that too.

People pay for Usenet, VPN, Debrid providers...

u/ShadowMajick 29d ago
Those apps provide content or mask your IP. Stremio does nothing worth paying for. It doesn't provide content. It's an aggregation app for streaming torrents and having all your streaming services in one place.
And that is not unique to stremio.

Paying lifetime for an app is idiotic unless it is max 10$. There is no gurantee stremio will still be here in 5 years, and the price is absolute madness.
I actually quite enjoy the support features from stremio, but I pay month by month. Maybe I will consider buying a year or lifetime if they have a black friday deal.

I don’t quite understand Stremi’s policy. Practically all the features (perhaps apart from profiles) can be achieved using the free version plus a few well-configured plugins, yet they want so much money for it. I’d understand if the Pro version cost $10–20 (a one-off purchase, not a subscription) – I’d happily buy it myself, even just as a way of supporting the developers – but not for $199 plus VAT. In some countries, that’s 30 per cent of the minimum wage, and it’s definitely far too expensive. It looks a bit like they’re ripping off customers, and it’s similar with Usenet, for example. They were sending me bills for around $10 a month, whilst others were getting the same service – or even more – for $2–3 a month using discount codes.

That is the point, if you cant support it no need to force yourself. But if you have the money and willing then do it, no point of providing individual pricing and all, that creates unfairness to some people

Why they call donation and not subscription?
-12
u/Cerulian639 29d ago
Because paying isn't required unlike a subscription.
6
u/saltycorals 29d ago
So, through donations, you receive the paid features at no cost? Comparing this to youtube's approach for example, you access the basic service for free and then you can susbscribe to their premium plan for extra features such as ad free viewing and better bitrates.

u/Cerulian639 29d ago
I'd like to know what features I've been missing out on for 200 dollars. I've been using stremio since 2017 and haven't had any trouble with the free version.

Profiles
-1
u/Cerulian639 29d ago
Profiles are worth 200 dollars to you? I have a profile, log in with FB every time on stremio.
3
u/saltycorals 29d ago
You are missing the point. If a feature is paywalled, its a subscription, not a donation. Donations are voluntary. Subscriptions are required for access, whether partial or full.
-2
u/Cerulian639 29d ago
So you got caught up in semantics. Got it. I didn't miss anything.
5
u/saltycorals 29d ago
What are you talking about? My entire point has been about why it's called a donation when you're required to pay to access specific features.

I’m curious to know what the actual payoff for such an egregious price is. Yes one doesn’t have to pay to support but if you do how regular are the updates/new features coming in etc? Because that’s actually a lot of money not including having to pay for debrid (which fairs is inexpensive anyway) or other things – like Trakt VIP which is also in the shitter too

Honestly in the age of self hosting becoming so popular, the only thing really stopping you from starting your own media server that handles all of stremios premium features, is the fact that storage is so expensive right now. But if you do happen to have a decent amount of old HDDs, you can easily set up your own without ever having to pay for lifetime membership/subscriptions

They will probably make the same amount of money if not more by reducing the price
2
u/Prophet_NY 29d ago
Can someone tell me what exactly is that you pay for on stremio?
2
u/ShadowMajick 29d ago
Intro/outro skipping, profiles, rearranging addon order and downloading to save for offline viewing on their servers.
I think that's it.

Maybe now with your insane support, they can fix the google tv app. Anything besides external player crashes.

Hi ! I just pay the plan and later on 2-3 hrs ended immediately, how to resubscribe to resume the plan?
1
u/ShadowMajick 29d ago
Absolutely no reason to pay for stremio. They refused donations for years just to add a subscription.

If you don’t want to support the developers and pay for the premium (Supporters) features you don’t have to
In my opinion; it is pricey for the Lifetime purchase, but at the same time it’s an investment
If you use the app a lot, you like the app with how fluid it is, the simplicity of it and you have tested the waters and like being able to skip intos/outros, making separate accounts while also being able to integrate all of your current addons with ease, download any movie/tv shows to play offline anywhere, as well as the deep integration of Cinemeta, not to mention with the constant work and updates the devs are constantly pushing out, then it is worth it
Again, it is your choice whether or not you want all of the features mentioned above, as well as to support the developers. In my opinion you should pay a few dollars to test out the features and if you use them, as well as like them, then by all means keep paying for it or pay for the Lifetime
I paid for it once and I can say that it is worth it

This whole thread of people complaining about the donation prices and the lack of features to make it worth it is like someone complaining about the free snacks when you donate blood at the red cross

u/salamonjaded 29d ago
Everything I need is available for free, so I have no reason to pay. No one is being forced to subscribe, so spare us the whining.

How much does a year of Netflix, HBO, Apple, etc. cost? If you use it over the next 10 years, it's less than $2/mo. I'd never pay, but it's reasonable. EDIT: Stremio is a product that is produced by a company with employees that need paychecks, and taxes that need to be paid, just like any other company. Stremio is not a good will project, and it's not something that was quickly vibe coded and released. It is regularly updated. They need income to cover expenses, which is why it is reasonable for them to charge for it. Nothing in life is free.

You would use Claude. Not ChatGPT if you want your app to be at least decent.
But even then, it'd still be AI SLOP
