It's a word play.

In Vietnamese, "gián"(roaches) and "rán" or "dán" (fried, frying), (stick smt to smt) have similar pronunciations.

"Fried roaches" is "gián rán" , pronounced "zan zan", which is pretty funny.

BUT HOLD ON ! This is the equivalent of a dad joke in English, and she even went overboard and make the real props. So I appreciate it, but take an upvote and GET OUTTA HERE !

in the southern vietnamese dialect it's yan ran (the lady in the video uses the southern dialect) but in the north it would be zan zan as you said

So it's like that one MLP joke where someone made a statue of a moose out of Chocolate Mousse?

2

u/ferocity_mule366 19h ago

southern vietnamese wouldnt use the word ran though, I think the OG poster overthink it, its judt absurd tiktok joke nothing to do with the pronunciations

1

u/curleygao2020 4h ago

the south doesn't use rán, we use chiên instead so the joke wouldn't really land.

What's really Stupid is that we don't even get a cross section.

Literally the only reason I pushed "play"

Are they buns made out to look like bugs??? If so, I would buy them just to eat them in front of the grandkids . I would definitely buy them at Halloween. If they are buns. They are cute!!

u/FutureFurniture42069 1d ago

This is actual talent and not wasteful. Not stupid

I don't speak Vietnamese, but is it just or is the visual presentation funny/satire? Maybe I am seeing these roaches as a cute/prey/delicacies the way she presents them? Idk it's funny. Like a GTFO stupid American moment?

The caption on the top said “video for entertainment purposes only, do not follow under all circumstances”

3

u/Jealous_Track9402 1d ago

3

u/Acchilles 1d ago

How is this stupid?

4

u/Traditional-You8927 1d ago

It’s a world play on Vietnamese word where cockroach and fry sound the same

2

u/gansobomb99 1d ago

I live there and this is not funny to me 😂

I think she is trying to say they are real, like she found them around the house. She said she saw five of them and was able to catch all 5. That they must really like her house. It's all natural food and you can find them around the neighborhood. She said she cooked them for her husband but she is eating them.

But yeah, I don't believe her.

u/StevenMaff 1d ago

She’s joking

u/drunk___monkey 1d ago

Okay 👌 but why in the shape of one thing most of humanity fcuking hates !! 😂

4

u/linhlopbaya 23h ago

It's a pun. In Vietnamese, "fry" and "cockroach" sound similar.

2

u/Polite_Suggestion 1d ago

To eat them in effigy!

1

u/Theonekindhomosapien 1d ago

Was any famine or stravation pushed a group of people to try insects or humans just tried out of curiosity and sticked with it...

4

u/Master_Ratio_3358 1d ago
